Raea Lovett is a freshman in the Silver School of Social Work majoring in social work and planning to double major in journalism on the pre-law track. Raea is a proud graduate of the School for Ethics and Global Leadership where she and her peers wrote a policy paper on the international drug trade in the northern Triangle which they presented to the United States State Department. Additionally, Raea has extensively researched “conversion therapy” or sexual orientation and gender identity change efforts, writing on the subject and lobbying policymakers at all levels of government to abolish the inhumane and ineffective practice. This summer she will travel to Barcelona to work with refugees and asylum seekers. Specifically, Raea will work with LGBTIQ+ migrants to help improve their language ability, connect them with social services, create new programs and initiatives, and raise awareness about the unique challenges queer migrants face.
The Gallatin Global Fellowship in Human Rights is a year-long program that supports selected NYU students with funding to focus on these issues while working with human rights organizations. Fellows pursue extended projects and internships (including research and report writing) for the host organization during the summer. The fellowship aims to allow students to contribute to the host organizations’ work while gaining experience in the human rights field in ways that complement their academic trajectory at NYU.
