A truly gargantuan task . . . reacting to a 25-year-old film that is a reimagining of a VERY old story with the added difficulty of thick accents and vernacular from the American South set almost 100 years ago. But Dasha handles it like a champ!

I spent three months in the Amazon rainforest in Peru with a wildlife conservation group made up of international volunteers. Most of them had never been to the US and a few of them had never even met someone from there. I'm a guitar player, another American guy there played the violin and we were both into bluegrass, so we played a lot of bluegrass songs by campfires. The other people there were fascinated: like they were watching something rare and exotic, and to them I guess they were. It was a really cool feeling. It's great music, too, just on its own. The people who weren't familiar with it absolutely loved the sound.

It is not George Clooney singing "Man of Constant Sorrow." They did a test recording with him and he himself described it as "It literally sounds like a cat caught in the wheel well of a truck driving down the street". The real singer is Dan Tyminski.

He'd get drunk and crank "man of constant sorrow" and clap and stomp his feet all of the time, it got to the point my mum was so sick of hearing it that she took the CD out of the stereo and launched it like a ninja star into the woods, my Dad didn't know what to say 😂

I mean...it hits all the major plot points of Homer's Odyssey. So the cyclops (Big Dan), the sirens, the oracle (old timer) and Odysseus (Clooney) traveling home to stop his wife's (forced) marriage. So you may be confused by the story or think the movie is "weird" but it makes sense in the context of an ancient story.

Art Thou are Old English words for Are You, so the title means "Oh Brother, Where Are You?" There're lots of references to the Odyssey by Homer in the film: The blind man on the little rail platform is a reference to Teiresias The congregation in white are alluded to the Lotus Eaters. The 3 women washing their clothes in the river are an allusion to the Sirens. Pete "being turned" into a toad is a reference to Odysseus' men being turned into animals by Circe. Big Dan, the one-eyed salesman, is reffering to the cyclops Polyphemus. Everett's wife, Penny references Penelope, Odysseus' wife and his 7 kids make up for Odysseus' only child, Telemachus. Vernon is the suitor(s) to Penelope trying to marry her, so they can take Odysseus' kingdom. Big Dan being crushed by the flaming cross alludes to Polyphemus being stabbed in the eye with a heat-tipped spear.

The big flood at the end ... which Everett does explain ... reflects a real-life historical event. In the 1930s during the Great Depression, the Federal government established a pretty huge program to bring electricity to several southern states that didn't have it consistently. It was at the time a very new sort of government project -- involving huge engineering and complex planning, and meant to help an entire region of the country. It was a long-term investment in modernizing a poorer part of the U.S., and also a more short-term way of bringing money and jobs during the Depression.
@lawrencejones1517
@lawrencejones1517 Ай бұрын
The 'Lawman' with the dark glasses that was looking for them follows the description that Tommy gives of the Devil. And at the beginning of the movie, Everett talks about how the area where his home is is going to be flooded because of the new artificial reservoir that was completed.

Dasha, this movie is a re-telling of an epic poem called The Odyssey, by an ancient Greek poet named Homer. In the Odyssey, the war between the Greeks and the Trojans at the city-state of Troy is over, and the Greek warriors board their ships to sail home. One Greek officer is named Odysseus, and it takes his ship and his crew ten more years to go home because misfortune hits them again and again. They stop is at a place called Delphi, to ask a prophet to tell them how they will get home. In this movie, the old, blind black man on the railroad hand-car is the prophet. He tells them things that they will see before their adventure is over. It would be easier for you to make sense of what the prophet says if you could read it in a transcript, as it goes by quickly in the movie. The young musician at the crossroads is Robert Johnson - a real-life musician who is said to have sold his soul to the devil in exchange for mastery at the blues guitar. Baby-Face Nelson was a real life criminal. The three ladies washing their laundry are the Sirens. The Sirens lured Odysseus' ship to near a whirlpool, and the ship almost sank. John Goodman (Big Dan) with the eye-patch, is the Cyclops. The Cyclops was a one-eyed monster who ate some of Odysseus' men. Somewhere at the start of the movie, it is said that a dam is being built for generating electric power, and that the valley will become a lake. At the end of the movie, the valley fills up in a split second, instead of over a long time. A commentator has said that this flood is like baptism in a way, but I can't remember the KZbin channel where I saw the commentary.

Dear Dasha: Thanks so much for your reaction. You are one of the most intelligent reactors working. I love how you are picking up on the conventions of movie story-telling, and can often tell when something is going to happen, and recognize it when it does. You seem to genuinely enjoy the movies you see and are open to different kinds of film. I hope that your growing knowledge is leading to a deeper appreciation of movies both as entertainment and as art. I am a huge Coen brothers fan. They are most famous for Fargo and No Country for Old Men, the Oscar winners, but this is a personal favourite of mine (as you can tell by my spelling of "favourite," which is the correct spelling, I am a fellow Canadian, though exiled to the foreign land south). Their movies are so layered that it helps if you are a movie buff and can catch some of the thought that goes into their films. Other commenters have pointed out that the basic idea of the movie comes from Homer's Odyssey, the nostos, the journey home, the main episodes, the sirens, the one-eyed Cyclops, the blind seer Tiresias, the suitors of his wife Penelope (same name as in the movie). But the Coen brothers famously admitted that they did not actually read the Odyssey before writing the movie. They just used what was commonly known about the story. In fact, the movie owes an awful lot to a Preston Sturges movie, the 1941 Sullivan's Travels. Sullivan's Travels is also one of my very favourite movies. I am a Trappist monk at the Abbey of Gethsemani in Kentucky and show that movie to the novices, since, in my opinion, it is all about vocation, what we are called to do. In it, the main character, Sullivan, is a writer of a series of hit comedies (Ants in Your Plants, Hey, Hey in the Haymow - the movie titles are one of the great running gags in the movie) who decides that he wants to make an IMPORTANT picture, based on the (fictional of course) book, "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" by the IMPORTANT novelist, Sinclair Beckstein (a hilarious amalgam of Sinclair Lewis and John Steinbeck). So he sets out on a journey to find what true hardship is, so he can be authentic. I won't summarize the whole plot, but he winds up as a prisoner in a chain gang, and there is a justly famous scene where the convicts are led, chained together, to a church where they watch a movie. The occasion is a turning point for the character, and makes the point of the movie - what we are called to do is often more important than we ourselves can see. The Coen brothers borrowed the name of their movie, used the chain gang, and quoted the cinema scene as a direct homage. I highly recommend Sullivan's Travels. It is hilarious, and moving, and genuinely great. But their homage shows the depth of their love for cinema and their regard for the great movies and directors of the past. Of course a reaction to Sullivan's Travels would probably not break any records for views, unfortunately. But you would surely enjoy it if you watched it on your own. This movie, however, stands on its own, you don't need to know the story of the Odyssey or Sullivan's Travels to enjoy it. It is brilliant in and of itself. Some of the commenters have given their favourite lines from the movie, and it is full of great lines, as are all of the Coen brothers movies. I love the quotes from history and legend as well, the reference to Robert Johnson, the guitarist who allegedly sold his soul to the devil at the crossroads for his immense talent. He wrote a song called "Crossroads" or "Cross Road Blues," famously covered by Cream in 1968. And there is the great cameo by George "Babyface" Nelson, the gangster. I also love the mannered dialogue, particularly by George Clooney (a Coen brothers favourite), which is also a Coen brothers characteristic. The movie gets better and better with each watch, and I was happy to sit down with you to walk through it yet again. So thank you, sincerely. - Your fan, Br. Lawrence

My hair! The title of this movie comes from the 1941 Preston Sturges movie Sullivan's Travels, in which the protagonist is a filmmaker who wants to make a movie titled "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" He never did get the movie made. The Coen Brothers finished the job for him 59 years later. There really was a blues guitarist named Tommy Johnson who supposedly sold him soul to the devil at the crossroads. Over time the legend was transferred over to Robert Johnson, probably because he was more famous than Tommy, and because he wrote and recorded a song called Cross Road Blues. There also really was a bank robber called Baby Face Nelson who was also known as George (though his real name was Lester Joseph Gillis). Nelson was a partner of John Dillinger. A lot of criminals in the depression era had wild nicknames, like Scarface, Pretty Boy Floyd, Machine Gun Kelly, and Bugs Moran. My favorite is Creepy Karpis. Jimmie Davis used You Are My Sunshine (which he co-wrote) as his campaign song when he ran for governor of Louisiana in 1944. It's now the state's official song. The sequence where the three guys rescue Tommy is based on the sequence in The Wizard of Oz where Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion rescue Dorothy from the witch's castle. While hiding, they peer out at a bunch of guys in uniforms marching in formation while chanting. Then they get in a fight with three of them and take their uniforms, which they use to sneak in to the castle/rally. They literally ran Homer Stokes out of town on a rail. The soundtrack of O Brother, Where Art Thou? became a top-selling CD. Bluegrass and folk music fans especially love it.

Odyssey references plus. Ulysses Everett McGill (only referred to as Everett except for once or twice . Further references to Ulysses’s gift of gab and story telling ,fear of fire. Also Everett refers to himself as the ’ol tactician. As Homer gives Ulysses several monikers based on Ulysses clever ideas e.g Trojan Horse ) struggles to return to his wife and family accompanied by his fellow convicts (unlike Ulysses’s crew, Pete is presumably turned to a toad not swine). Like Homer’s Odysseus , the travelers meet several mythological characters , to wit, oracle on a rail car, sirens (Emmylou, Alison & Gillian) by the river and the cyclops and Penelope. Unlike the Penelope in the movie, Homer’s Penelope, and their son, is aggressively loyal to her wayward husband. Other popups- Robert Johnson’s Crossroads where Tommy sells his soul to the devil to play the guitar. Also Menelaus as Pappy.

Don't worry, everyone else knows that this isn't a typical movie, too. For such a silly movie, it did a good job of reflecting life at that time. My father grew up during that period. When I was taking care of him, we often watched this movie. It always made him cry when the two little boys were carrying the block of ice down the road in their bare feet. He said it was just like he and his little brother used to do. He also always commented that there is nothing as good as stolen pie. He didn't say where he ever stole pie from as most of his time was dedicated to taking care of milk cows. But he loved that they left money for the pie in the movie.

Railroad hand cars like what you see at the beginning of the movie were used back in the old days of railroading before motorized speeders, or special trucks that have sets or railroad wheels by the track maintenance crews. The train in the film was pulled by a steam locomotive. Both the hand car, the steam locomotive and the caboose at the end of the train are museum exhibits now. Many companies will run vintage railroad equipment like steam engines for tourist purposes sometimes. The people riding in the boxcar were riding illegally trying to find work. They were called "hoboes". Obviously the movie took place during the Great Depression. I remember hearing the song Man of constant sorrow quite frequently as a child since the movie came out in 2000. I was born in 1995.

The Cohen brothers wrote a TV show, specifically for Delmar from this, that he starred in 15 years later, the Sballad of Buster Scruggs! Charles Durning was a super hero ww2 vet, and had a ling TV show and movie career, including Everyone Loves Raymond! But his role here as governor is a masterpiece! The song at the river is sung by Robert plant of LED Zeppelin, his wife! She does it as a choir, and as a quartet of master female musicians! She is 8n the movie, asking the store clerk , do u have the record, man of constant sorrow? She is also one of the singers of...ho tobsleep u little baby! Alysson krauss! She has an Angels voice! The blind record producer is Stephen Root, and can act in any role!

Dasha, you seem to like the southern style music, you should react to the song Man of Constant Sorrow sung by the group Home Free.

6:15 Somehow I don't think "He chose a great spot because it is at an intersection" would make as good of a blues song as "I went down to the crossroads".

The title “oh brother where art thou” is reference to a fake movie from a real movie called Sullivan’s Travels. That film takes place during this time in America. The director of that film one of the Coen Bros favorite film maker’s named Preston Sturges.

The 3 singing women are syrins, kinda like elves but when they sing they hypnotise men and then do pretty much what ever they wanna do, but its supposed to be a moral, beware the syrins song. Meaning a beautuful wonan just singing vover your ears syrins can only be women
