I LOVE how Obama's staff all genuinely like each other and have fun when they get together. Says ALOT about them AND their (former) boss when you get staff like that. I LOVE learning about the process, about the ins and outs of what it’s like to work at the WH. And when it’s Alyssa and Dan talking about it, it’s 100x better! I agree with Dan about the nonsense that is all unnecesary grandeur of these things, but I also think that it’s human nature for people to crave these rituals. 🤷🏻♀️

Part of it is so many Americans fled from political and religious oppression that celebrating the peaceful transfer of democratically elected power was a big deal. All 4 of my grandparents came to the US as young adults and would weep on inauguration day regardless of who was elected. Some of it is also in absence of a royal family the inauguration provide pomp and glamour that people enjoyed in the early TV days. Now it is indeed outdated and not necessary but this year I feel like celebrating so it does not annoy me as much!

Pardon the personal story, but I worked on the Carter campaign in 1976, when I was 15, as volunteer coordinator for a city in New England. I was invited to the inauguration, by which time I'd turned 16 and way too big for my britches. I was fully humbled by the experience -- the parade, the ball, the camaraderie with other people from the campaign. I think it made me less of an asshole teenager to have worked so hard and reaped the reward of seeing a good person take office. So, you might think the pomp is bullshit, but my 16-year-old self begs to differ.

Its pretty funny that when you recorded this video, the idea of being a presidential staffer was so revolting but a mere 2 days later that duty is filled with such honor. Congrats to you both on making it to the inner circle of such an important office. For historic cases like Obama and Harris, I think the inauguration ball is important. The image of the first black POTUS and first lady dancing at the inauguration ball was very powerful. These are not the typical images you see of black families in the media. That matters.
