Although there's also the theory that essentially everything you cause to happen in a timeline causes other things to happen in that timeline. Nope, it was because the script needed him to have taken the stairs as otherwise, they couldn't have had him in Endgame in the position to knock Tony down and consequently lose the tessaract and mess the mission up. Also, the Loki series is actually based on the fact that he used the tessaract to teleport and ended up with the time bureau thingy.
