She was born in Geneva, Switzerland of Russian parents, she was fluent in Arabic by the age of 14 and yearned to travel around North Africa.
She did that and a whole lot more!
Her adventures began in Algeria aged 20.
She dressed as a man to be able to go to places where women were not allowed in the Islamic culture. She indulged in sensual pleasures like there would be no tomorrow… perhaps she had a premonition of just how short her life would be.
She smoked, she drank, she took drugs and bedded any man that caught her eye.
Join me as we explore the fascinating life of Isabelle Eberhardt - headstrong and defiant till the end!
Oddie Beau's ODDNESS Urban exploration & famous historical features! vintage crime cases & eccentric people from the past! ...and other weird stuff :) ....a dusty store window, filled with ancient alluring oddities. Once you've entered, you'll never want to leave. Quality over quantity.

What an odd life she lived. When she converted to Islam I thought she was going to be beheaded! They don’t look too kindly on cross dressing. Great story, Oddie. Excellently written and executed, as always! Wonderful choice of material too!

What a bigoted comment. Hopefully after hearing her story you learned that the Europeans were the ones who ostracised and didn't accept her while the Arabs welcomed her. I suggest you read about queer history in the Arab world and how colonialism had a negative influence in that regard.

Interestingly, you might think the same about the Turks, but they have two very popular singers, both of which are cross dressers. They have a modest tollerance for unorthodox behavior as well.

What an amazing story Oddie!! well done my friend...She lived her life like there was no tomorrow...It's crazy that she was allowed to dress like a man during that period. I'll bet that there is a lot more shocking things that she did that we will never know about!! Truly a woman who was leaps and bounds ahead of her time!!

Sadly in the UK at the same time church baptism records would label a child "base" "illegitimate" or depending on the clergyman "bastard"! After 1837 state issued birth certificates just named the mother without comment.

I did some research on my grandfather’s family (who is from Honduras), and I found the records for my great great grandfather, who was written as a “natural son” in his baptism form, and only his mother’s name was written. I can only imagine who the father was, or what happened to him.

All women should "make love for the love of making love", just as their male counterparts. Feminists like Isabelle are to be admired. Non-conformity is not for the faint-of-heart. It takes much courage. She *chose* to live her life outside of the *constraints* of European *imperialist* conventions and *patriarchal* mores. She shall thus be added to my personal ever-growing list of sheroes. Thank you Oddy, for introducing me to another extraordinary woman. Your story-telling is art indeed. 🖤

A very interesting but odd story. Never heard of her, she was brave taking all the chances she did. Beautiful pictures of the people & surroundings. Beautiful cat, is she very old or sick? Lost my 2 black cats about year & half ago ----old age å illness.Loved hearing you pronounce those names etc. You do very well, enjoyed it.❤

Our kitty is just elderly, she does have health issues but they are being maintained and in fact, the vet is always amazed at how good she looks for her age. Sorry to hear that you lost your furry companions, will you be getting another? Very glad you enjoyed the presentation and thank you so much for your positive feedback.

Love this story. Few people live life on their own terms but she did in an especially radical way. I was surprised she died of natural causes, I imagined she was likely killed for breaking so many social mores. I wonder if she truly understood the risks. I also wonder if she enjoyed being able to "pull one over" on those who didn't recognize she was a woman. But clearly she enjoyed for freedom. Thanks for another great video! (Such a sweet kitty too ❤)

Isabella was admirable with her complex and uncompromising devotion to her own hedonism. The only flaw I see is in her view that she claimed no responsibility for her actions. It diminishes her power to think her life was purely predestined by God and in no way was directed by her own free will. Thank you Oddie for sharing her story. Fascinating woman!

@@ObsoleteOddity It's really a human right and okay to choose to be reckless in life (in my opinion today, tho likely not shared by those in her time) But I think it's somewhat self deceiving to say it was all preordained. How she acted came from real life decisions she made. The results she experienced I suppose could be argued would have foreseeable consequences. But that's hardly predestined! Maybe it is easier to see it from the vantage point of hindsight. I do love these individuals you find that step out and follow their very unique paths! Thank you for your diligent work exploring these amazing lives and the beautiful presentations you create!

@@karenfitzpatrick6256 it may be a human right, but I think it’s an insult to our creator. This vessel, our body is a gift in which we can experience different things and learn from those experiences to spiritually evolve. It is our duty to cherish that gift, and not treat it recklessly and not endanger our health. These are, of course, only my personal beliefs. But indeed, that might have been her lesson, not preordained, but certainly her choice. But we certainly agree on some points 🙂 So very glad you enjoy these eccentric individuals, as much as I do. Thank you!

@@ObsoleteOddity Interesting point. Tho even from a very flawed person who has been given the blessings to be a parent to three grown children and grandmother to eight growing grandchildren, I have never taken it as a personal insult when one of them has done something I consider reckless to their health. (And boy has that happened!) I'm always very concerned, yes. I wonder how I may help guide them to see the danger, yes. Mostly I want to show them how much I love, support and value them. As a Christian, I guess I see God as the ultimate Father, far beyond the human emotion of fear that usually drives anger. Whose unconditional life giving love doesn't use passive aggressive methods to punish us. Though I know not everyone would agree. His perfect love, tho beyond my capabilities, only enhances my feelings of guilt and inadequacy. It does increases my desire to follow Jesus' example to take good care of myself and those around me. It's the reason I became a nurse. Free will is the God given gift that I can use to do what is right as a person and as a parent. It's fascinating how much many believers use their faith's moral compass in every decision. Yet sometimes it's hard to see whether our motivation to act is coming from our human values or divine teachings! We have the opportunity to gain wisdom from each experiences we are given and every person is on a unique journey. That's the beauty of life. The stage may be set before us, but we are free to adlib the narrative. Discernment, choosing between right and wrong, is difficult enough sometimes. I never feel worthy to let that lead to judgement. That's in my Maker's realm as director of the play. When I was a child I wanted to please my parents out of respect for the lessons they taught me because they loved me and I often let them down. As a parent, I often felt an inadequate teacher when my children didn't always act in ways that show they have understood a lesson. Somehow I feel responsible for that. God doesn't share my human flaws. Thank you for opening my mind to examine some of my own lessons. You help by providing us with thought provoking stories that can help us understand ourselves better and what we base our views upon. Intriguing isn't it, how we can learn from watching and listening to other's stories! Please keep bringing us these interesting cases. They are much appreciated!

Isabelle was a very brave young woman. She was certainly not alone in having dreams of exotic far away places, and the desire to have, as men did, the freedom to go, and to explore them. Unlike most young women of her time, she was given the means through her education, to do so. She was very beautiful,, and she embraced the beauties of the Arabic world and wanted to be surrounded by them. Once you have thrown the rule book away…the rest is easy. She never fit into the straight laced society to which she was born, she was like 10 pounds of dynamite in a 5 pound package. I don’t think she regretted being a woman, she enjoyed the fine fabrics, and the seduction of loving men. She only despised the limitations that were placed on women by so many means, from clothing education, to laws regarding property and finances. She may have lived a short life…but she lived it on her own terms. Thank you Oddie, this was beautifully told and illustrated, as always. I may have to look up her writings. Sending much love and light to you and Odette as we draw ever closer to the longest night.🖤🇨🇦

Indeed, she was, not many women in those times would’ve ever have dared such an adventure. She was obviously very interested in the Islamic culture, so I guess in that way, it’s a natural progression for her to end up in a country where she could study it and practice her Arabic. What wasn’t expected was her lifestyle once she got there, but I guess that was a part of her soul journey, and was always going to express itself in some way or another - as you say, 10 pounds of dynamite in a 5 pound package, 😄 Yes, considering she got married in the traditional sense, it would appear that she did enjoy being a woman, but as you also said, wanted the freedom that men enjoyed. Very glad you enjoyed it, my dear friend, and happy that it has inspired you to investigate Her writings further. Also, sending love to you and Richard, hope everything is okay your end? I have a few more episodes before Christmas. Take care, my friend ❄️🧡☀️

@@tamarrajames3590 I cannot imagine being faced with such knowledge, but indeed, we’ve all done it hundreds of times before, and it’s as natural as birth - but in this dream, we know there is a temporary parting of our friends and loved ones, and that is still hard, even if we are strengthened by the knowledge that it’s not the end. All my loved ones who have passed on, I have seen them and I know they’re okay - but nevertheless, there is still that sense of loss, and there shouldn’t be. You have my email dear Tamarra, and I believe my phone number? If not let me know and I will provide it per email. If you ever need someone to talk to, I’m always available. Take care dear friend and give our love to Richard. xx

@@ObsoleteOddity We know what we know, but we also feel what is real. We grieve for ourselves, not the loved ones who are taking this journey without us. There will be an empty place within us, that only they can fill. Watching, as a part of you is growing slowly weaker, knowing it will end in their absence until you can meet them again is the hardest thing I have ever done. I could never try to make him stay longer, when he knows his time is approaching, it would be unfair…because he would try to do it for me, instead of stepping unencumbered into the boat to cross the river. I have to let him go, knowing I love him, and that I do not stand against his need to go. I was Widowed before, and I know and understand the process, but I was younger then, and only 7 years into the Marriage. This will be very different, and I am as ready as I can be. I simply have to trust what I know, and flow with it. Richard asked me to say hello for him, and he is sorry we won’t be able to meet again in a lovely chateau this lifetime, but sharing the time we had in Zurich is a happy memory. Love, and Blessed Be. I will write you an email as things change, and share phone numbers my dear friends.✨🖤🇨🇦

@@tamarrajames3590 that’s exactly how it is, we are the ones who grieve - they are free of pain and suffering, and I’m equally sure it must be hard for those who have passed to see the ones left behind grieving for them, but there is nothing we can do about that- that sense of loss is just there and can’t be avoided. I can’t imagine Tamarra how you must feel, I couldn’t even imagine how I could survive without Odette, and we’ve only been together approximately half the time that you and Richard have been together. I’m so sorry that we won’t get to meet Richard again in this lifetime, but there will be others, and I’m sure that we have known each other in previous incarnations. We were very happy that we got to meet him when you’re both came to Zürich, and we will treasure those memories. Sending much love 💕
