Six Baby Seals Rescued One Missed

We have spotted seven entangled baby seals in one big group of seals. We didn't have enough nets, so we had to secure some by hand, which is always risky. Even though these rescues are not easy, we try our best to rescue every entangled seal, and missing one is never a good feeling. These innocent seals suffer unfairly. Hopefully, one day this will come to an end. 🦭

Wow, Dylan has really become a full member of your team already. It's impressive how confidently he gives you adults a hand and doesn't shy away from the sometimes serious injuries. Great young man! Many thanks for your fantastic work! Greetings from Germany

If, by sometimes serious injury, you mean when he approached the seal head on, then yes. However, that is not the way to do it, and Tony had to quickly tell him to move to the side to avoid getting bitten. Confidence is useless with out correct knowledge of what to do and how.

I'll be the dissenting voice. Dylan takes too long to find the line, so the seal is held longer, stressing it out more. I don't approve of "learning on the job" in this situation. Keep him on the binoculars, for scanning.

I'm so glad you spotted and rescued so many in one run. But it also infuriates me that you spotted so many that needed rescuing in one run. I'm thankful to OCN for never giving up on helping the animals despite mankind's don't-give-a-damnism about the environment and pollution. Thank you.

So dreadful the seals getting tangled up in these awful fishing lines, but it's always that much worse isn't it guys, when the line is so deeply embedded that the skin has grown over it, so painful for the poor seal. Also very difficult to see the line sometimes, and then there was that tricky one when you had to get the line out of the seal's mouth. You all did extremely well, guys, that was a busy time for you, but very satisfying that you rescued these seals. 👍😊

Hi team! What an amazing group of rescues! Some of us say it and we’ll keep saying it that it sure seems like the recreational fisherman are tying those loops on purpose. I have watched videos about Snoek fishing and there are no loops tied. I have been fishing for freshwater fish for ever. Never tied a loop like this. Watched tons of videos of saltwater fishing. Never seen a loop tied like this.

We do not believe these loops are deliberately tied to kill Cape fur seals, but they eventually do so. Fishermen have quicker and more effective ways to get rid of pinnipeds, especially at sea, where no one watches. Commercial fishing lines are often tied in loops on board fishing vessels to secure equipment or hang fish in the hold. Recreational fishing lines are stored on reels and naturally tend to loop once uncoiled. When they get tangled or knotted, anglers cut and discard them as they are unfortunately too cheap to be worth unravelling. Many studies show that fishing gear poses the greatest entanglement threat to marine wildlife. Fishing activities are inherently destructive and fully participate to the plastic crisis our oceans are now facing. We therefore encourage our viewers to stop eating seafood.

It is sad, yet perfectly normal, in colonies of tens of thousand pinnipeds to see dead bodies lying on the beach. Natural causes like predation, starvation and sickness prevent half the Cape fur seal pups to see year one. Older animals are also subject to diseases and injuries. We leave the dead bodies to the seabirds, jackals and hyenas.

Amazing work Denzil but then when you run as fast as you do, I guess you need great eyesight 🧐🙌🏻 Great assists, Dylan. A trick I learned when the adrenaline is surging in emergency situations, that will be very similar to having so many rescues back to back: before you start the next task, take a deep breath first. It gives you a moment to run through in your mind what you are going to do, it also helps calm the effects that adrenaline is having on your heart rate & breathing letting you slow down a little but most importantly, also keeping you safe as that momentary pause, thinking through what you are going to do gives time to decide if that is the best approach & also if you're safe while doing it, all while taking a deep breath in then slowly letting it out. Stop, breathe, think, then act, it really works 👊🏻 Naude, the seal with the line around it's body & through its mouth looked like it had had a flossing issue! I noticed you were using your Leatherman then, before you mentioned about your tool wandering; have you considered adding something to your Raptor tools to keep them attached to you, like a lanyard, a retractable line like those used for ski passes or ID cards, or a curly wurly expanding clip (like the cord on old house phones to the handset- you can get them with pinch clips to hold them close to you when not in use. We use them on diving gear like cameras that we don't want to lose when getting in or out of the water when are hands are otherwise occupied), or even just a carabiner on your Raptors that you could clip on your clothing/gear harnesses once you've finished one rescue so you know where it is when you move on to the next seal, & the next? I'd gladly send some out if you think they'd help & can't easily get hold of them locally.

The embedded knot was hard to watch. I am so glad Antoine did not just assume recapture as it would have spelled the end of this seal's life. Thank you team OCN for all you do.
