Antoine and Naude from Ocean Conservation Namibia (www.ocnamibia.org) were joined for their daily seal patrols by local surfers Shaun and Uwe, they did a great job spotting entangled seals and assisting with the rescues.
The activists could see 3 entangled seal pups within close proximity of each other. Antoine and Naude came up with a strategy (which almost never goes according to plan!) and gave chase. Naude first caught a young male seal stuck in an orange plastic mesh vegetable bag. Simultaneously, Antoine secured another pup , who had a ball of fishing line wrapped around her, with their customer built seal catching net. Before rescuing this seal, Antoine had to run off to a female pup with a deep cut around her neck. The cut was caused by a thin cotton string. Naude came to help him remove this string once he had finished cutting loose the vegetable bag on the first seal.
Naude again ran off after a young male pup in the distance with some thin line around his neck. He quickly managed to secure the youngster and cut him free with his Leatherman Raptor.
Antoine and Naude then returned to the first pup, still patiently waiting in the net. This particular one was stuck in a big ball of snoek fishing line - the most common entanglement material encountered out at Pelican Point, Namibia. 🦭

So true. When I subscribed I never expected to see new videos posted every day! It really made me think about what I throw in the trash. I don't live at the ocean but birds and other wildlife could also get entangled at landfills. So now I cut anything that is long or loopy up. It's just heartbreaking to see these poor pups. So glad you guys are there to help!

@@brittanybecker170 It seems that a cotton t shirt will completely degrade in salt water in a year or so, but it's quite likely that the thread it was sewn with is polyester, which will never degrade. And in many ways, it's our fault, because of what we buy, and our poor recycling habits.

these are very lucky seals, because they got caught and freed of their burdens, and the basic fact that there are people willing to do this valuable work, you guys have my gratitude, if i were a younger man and over there i would give up my time to help you, your efforts make a real difference, it's heart breaking to see the state of many of these seals, especially the little pups, but your work is very valuable, after all nobody can help these seals but human beings with our brains, our compassionate hearts and opposable thumbs, well done guys many of us out here in youtube land watch and appreciate your might efforts, it's obvious that's it's hard work chasing down a seal who is working just as hard to not be caught, and fighting their liberators, excellent work, many seal have been saved from miserable lives and painful deaths , thank you again !!!

Hurrah! Sad that so many seals need your help, but awesome that you were there for them today 😎 I liked having a different viewpoint, thanks to Shawn and Uwe for that and their help today. I'm also very pleased to see a steady increase in your go get funding. I donated about a month ago, and hope to be able to give more in the future. Poor old trusty is really showing its age, I hope you're able to get a new net soon.

It's super depressing how common these entanglements are. It's not just occasional sightings, it's every time you scan a group you find several suffering. Thank goodness for you guys and the work you do.
