1.5 months with my new M2 Pro 14 (16/512). Got it as an addition to my Desktop (Ryzen 5850X, 64GB RAM, 3080TI). I am a developer: .NET API, Android, iOS, VueJS. My Ryzen seems to be still faster in some dev tasks, especially for Microsoft related technologies. 16GB for Mac seems to be not enough if you plan to run Android/iOS Emulators. My plan is to switch to 32GB/1024 in 6m-12m, probably, it will be already an M3. As an Windows user: MacOS UX objectively sucks ) but I accept that for the performance and versatility of this machine

Yeah I just bought a 14" M1 Pro 10 Core 16GB/1TB in Silver for just a few USD over $1600 from best buy as an open box excellent condition. Random note, I had bought the Space Gray version and received the day before in the same condition looking 100% like new for $310 more after taxes on both so checking colors and all specs for the best deal for YOU is important. Maybe they'll drop the price on the space gray when they get mine back again tomorrow. I felt the money was worth it for the upgrades for my planned use, but the 8 core/512GB M1 was of course cheaper last I looked. B&H had some great deals about an month ago that I missed on new sealed models and I've had solid luck out of BBY's OB offerings.

Honestly I was in the same spot when getting the MBA M2 with 16 GB RAM upgrade last year, but in the end I don't really need the power of a M1/M2 Pro and rather need it to have a long battery life for an entire day, which the MBA definitely has, and with the updated design it was a good purchase in the end.

Can't believe there's a video for this one out there, it really is a great find at the current moment! Just got the M1 Pro refurbished myself, about two weeks ago. Writing this on that one right now. It's been an outstanding upgrade from my late 2015 iMac, which I think was mainly starting to slow down either from the SATA drive, or GPU aging (random kernel crashes around the sleep-awake cycle). If you're reading this when it's still available to get from the Apple refurbished site, I definitely recommend it if you are currently in need of an upgrade. I didn't realize how great the larger screen is compared to the 13" models either, a nice bonus over the M2 Air if you are debating between that one too. It's the same thing with the ports too, also a nice bonus. I also haven't heard the fans kick up yet, so haven't had to worry about that.

Last summer we needed another laptop, when the specs were released for the M2 Air we decided to spend a little more and get a 14" Pro base. In December another old laptop bit the dust so we bought another... a few weeks later the M2 came out. We evaluated the "estimated" increases and my son felt like having to reinstall everything would be more of a hassle and the M1 Pro base was more than fast enough for what he was doing (school work and light Final Cut at school). Another son will need one this summer but the case then may be a 15" MBA vs the 14" M2 Pro... we shall see. To me, and I have a 16" M1 Pro I got at release, the 14" Mx Base is the best bang for buck laptop. The screen alone to me is worth the price over the air and the size is perfect... big enough but not as large as the 16" which is more cumbersome than expected.

I recently went through this exact dilemma and landed on the refurb largely because of your video talking about how good the refurb store is. I would have loved 1 tb but it just wasn’t feasible. I briefly considered a new MBA but felt like at the price, especially with storage upgrade it just didn’t make sense. I also really wanted the new form factor. Realistically an M1 air with the nice new design upgrades to 1 tb probably would have gotten my buy too.

Well timed video. I am thinking of using the savings in the refurbished store to get the 16inch M1. The attraction is the extra vertical screen real-estate. Also, I am used to lugging around a Dell Precision laptop which has nearly the same footprint as the 16inc, so I am blissfully ignorant to the benefits of the lighter 14inch.

Apparently if you run the m2 chip in power saving mode, its performance is identical to the m1 pro 10 core, but in power saving mode lasts longer on battery and has less heat. Then when you need that 10-20% more cpu performance just turn power save mode off. I personally went with m2 for power consumption advantages, going with the 10 core model. 6 efficiency cores 4 performance cores. My thought was this will increase battery the most, plus reduce heat which should prolong the lifespan of the computer. In music daw’s there are ways to reduce cpu usage, such as freeze tracks, bouncing to audio, and buffer size. So i went for the slightly slower multi core from m1 option with 20% efficiency gain route!

The only time they turn on is when I run a spectral de-noising pass on a 30 minute high-res field recording in Izotope RX which literally maxes out every single core. Even then, the fastest fan speed I've seen was 1700 RPM which is still inaudible with this MBP.

The price for it can be even lower if you're savvy with it, like sales on B&H or even Best Buy Refurbished, for as low as $670. Yes, ProMotion would be nice and the new design with MagSafe and a dedicated HDMI port is sweet, but thinking that I was ready to pay 800€(?!) more to still have just one computer sounds crazy to me right now. Though I have to say that the deal I got is insane, I still think that people don't have to go for the 14", even though it is tempting and I was about to do it as well. For me as a student the Air seems like the perfect solution!

Same conclusion here when the 14” launched and I was still working for Apple. For me the deal breaker was the screen, which I was surprised you didn’t touch on. That alone made it worth the jump from the air. Then you factor the SSD and RAM jump baked into the price and it seems like a no brainer. No, they aren’t the $599 Mac Mini or the $999 MacBook Air which make for good headlines but frankly you get a much more capable computer. Apples limited product stack definitely plays into this for sure. When was the last time you saw a video titled “Which HP/Lenovo/Dell laptop is the sweet spot in their lineup.”

Depends how painful those extra quids would be for me! If I could comfortably afford it, sure I’d get the better one, but back in reality I’d get the 14” M1; my work laptop is the 16” M1 Pro and it’s fantastic, I don’t feel like I’d need anything more recent

I made this decision last summer. I was replacing my 2018 MBP13. I considered the M2 MBA, and the M1 Pro MBP14. I went with the MBP14 and have no regrets after ~6 months. There are a lot of concessions with the M2 MBA, and I needed 512GB storage and 16GB RAM. So I got a slightly larger laptop, a much more powerful SOC out of the MBP14, and got it for about $1700 on sale.

I can make the switch from x86 to ARM much easier than I can make the switch from >=64GB to

Finishing my bachelor thesis on MBP 13" from 2015 was not ideal at the later stages with 150+ tabs of research and procrastination open. But after finishing that, I treated myself to a 14" M1 Pro last September for my Master's. Could not wish for a better computer! I needed a new device for the semester anyways and there was a deal with the AirPods Pro 2, the sale wasn't that huge but there was no point in waiting for M2 Pro. Can't recommend this laptop enough.

As someone who works with audio, the sequential disk speeds are incredibly important when it comes to moving sound packs or exports. So I'd have to go with the M1; although my Asus Vivobook is perfectly capable today. Plus I tend to multi-task, meaning that 8gb of ram is not enough for me. I feel terrible slowdowns on a few years old iMac with a dual-core i5 and 8gbs of ram. It can take me almost ten minutes for everything to be come responsive.

This model he's talking about has 16 GB of RAM, and even if it's a bit slower than before, 3460 MB/s is still more than fast enough, about as fast as any PCI-E Gen 3 drive, which still comes standard on many new laptops, by the way. That means that the entire 512 GB hard drive will take like 2.5 minutes to read or write in its entirety. It was a big issue on the base M2, but as most people have pointed out, on the M2 Pro, it's really not an issue.

Had to get a 16" MacBook m1 ultra(32 core. 32 GB. 1tb) for school before these came out. I have no TVs or monitors with 2.1, and routers at home or school don't support wifi 6E. Do wish I got 64gb but seeing how my colleagues run davinci flawlessly on the base models, I feel it's a sweet spot between fantadtic video editing while dabbling in little character 3D modeling and quick gaming(ffxiv). Has the same number of cores as my 7820x desktop with 2 more E cores, it's mind-boggling. The m1 is still a great option at refurbished or aftermarket if you can get applecare+. If I ever need a new MacBook, ill buy on refurbished store for the m4-5 imo

The M1 Pro is still very viable and worth the price, especially with the refurb discount, and considering that a typical Mac purchase is a long-term buy -5 years or more- it's a machine you can be happy with until it comes time to trade up to the next big speed bump over the horizon.

I actually pick the exact M1 MacBook Pro in the refurbish store for the exact same reason shown in the video. With the extra 500 CAD saved, you can get a 2 TB SSD, some more accessories and headphone. To be honest, I really don't see why we should pay that much more for the 2 extra core. I think the form factor on the MacBook Pro 14 is the most crucial decision factor to me, mostly the speaker and the high refresh rate monitor. How about refurbished MacBook Air, will you consider them to be budget-friendly capable machine?

Well in my line is work it's about extra Screen numbers ( I work in theatre) for those who don't know The industry uses a software called Qlab. It only works on Mac, and yes there are non Mac versions, but they don't interface with the Lighting desks and sound desks so we are stuck with Qlab, it's not a bad software it's very good at what it does. But when your using it for multiple projection capability while the software can cope with multiple outputs it's down to the actual Mac outputs that leaves us all seething. A case in point at this moment we are running a show with three separate projectors. Now technically it can be run of the M1 macMini we have or the studio. But it can't. Se we are now running the old Trash Bin Mac Pro as the master and have the M1 Pro mini up in the lighting rig networked through a 1gb switch running one projector. And the Trash can firing the other two. Oh the life of a tech

I was about to get the M2 Pro, but this video helped me decide between the two and I don’t regret it at all. The M1 Pro seems to be exactly as capable and I saved a ton of money on it as well. Instead of the $2400 retail price of the M2 Pro, converted from local currency, I got the M1 Pro for just about $1180 new, not refurbished. Couldn’t have gotten a more value for money laptop.

I bought an M2 Max a week after it launched. This is only my 3rd new MacBook purchase ever because the rest have lasted so long between purchases. I spec'd up this model and fully expect it to last as long or longer than my previous 2007 MacBook and 2012 MacBook Pro w/ retina. Given the average life, the price was easily justifiable and especially because of the deep ecosystem integration. It was worth the cost for what I do with it and has blown me away in every aspect of the hardware. The M1 Pro is also just as stunning, but being a 1st gen cpu, I was worried about the longevity as I adopted my 2007 MacBook just 2 years after the switch to Intel so I wanted to give them a generation to simmer on the switch to Arm.

When I was considering a new laptop a year ago, Apple was one of my considerations; and I definitely would've gone with either 14" or 16" Pro if I had the budget for it and they were available at the time. But instead I went with an 8c16t AMD APU powered Lenovo; I do a lot of programming and play games that get throttled by CPU more than GPU.

I got the 14" M1 Pro exactly on the day of the 14" M2s release, as a refurbished from Apple. Conditition is brand new, just like the one year warrenty with the ability to buy Apple Care. I paid 1729€ (incl. Taxes), the M2 would have cost 2399€ or 2199€ with education. That 700€ - or 500€ EDU - more for 8k HDMI (I only got two 27" 2k monitors and a 4k TV) which was therefore not appealing, same with the WiFi 6E which no device (including my AP/router) has. I mean yeah, two efficiency cores more... but thats about it. It was my first apple PC/Mac and I'm so glad I made the change from windows. Its the best PC/laptop I ever owned. Can only recommend going this route - and Jonathan seems to think the same :)

The difference between them for non-power users is so minimal that a refurbished M1 is the better deal at stock prices. Maybe m3 will change that, but, m1 is such a good platform that I could see apple just keeping it and putting it into everything in the future, unless a new rev substantively improves the platform without an overly increased bill of materials or cost.
