Ten or twelve years ago the radiator in my 1600 diesel was starting to leak so I took it to a local radiator shop and the owner did a great job on the re- core. May of the following year while performing field work, the original Oliver fan threw a blade end and trashed the radiator necessitating a second re-core. If memory serves, each time was around $300. I now run a one piece, six blade flex fan.

Back in the day when I started twisting wrenches, alcohol was the antifreeze of choice for most people simply because detergent oil was still suspect and permanent antifreeze was also suspect. Alcohol antifreeze if it leaked into the cylinders via a bad head gasket was not that critical other than the coolant going missing. Permanent antifreeze which is a ethelyne glycol (sugar based) coolant. A leaking head gasket that let it into the cylinders would cause the piston to cylinder walls to "gald" and it usually meant the bad cylinders had to be bored to oversize so usually all of the cylinders got bored and new pistons and rings were installed. Prestone was a popular permanent antifreeze because returning GIs remembered that the water cooled aircraft ran full Prestone coolant. I think that Prestone is the used name for most coolants today in some areas of the world. My dad was a proponent of the permanent antifreeze as it worked well, if the coolant system was good, and Wow, you could leave it in for 2 years before changing. With alcohol antifreeze the stuff usually needed draining and replacing with water for summer and then the water drained before winter approached. We opened all drain plugs and used a water hose to flush the cooling system. If it the stuff drained was almost mud, we would ask if the customer wanted the cooling system cleaned. If so we would fill the system with water and add some Sno-Bowl toilet cleaner. Let it sit and run for 30 minutes, then drain and flush the system and add antifreeze. Today people think the antifreeze is in the car for 250,000 miles. Today the coolant sold is a 50/50 mix. I think that came around because some thought they would just fill their systems with full strength antifreeze and that simply caused a ton of problems. And people are happy paying for a gallon jug that is half water. I divide the full strength stuff into 2 jugs of 50/50 as my water is cheaper than theirs. Of course today, you have different colors of antifreeze for different models. We had a customer whose engine was running a little hot. So he got out, raised the hood and removed the radiator cap. He could not see down into the tank so he lit a match to see if he could see the coolant level. The alcohol ignited, he got bad burns on his face and hands. Permanent antifreeze never did anything like that. All though, Ford had a big problem with Ambulances burning to the ground. The cause was that they installed AmsOil antifreeze in the system. There was a heater hose that was close to an exhaust manifold and it would develop a leak and spray on the manifold and ignite. I thought that was nuts until I had an ambulance in my shop because it had a dead rat in the interior air system. It was not a rat, it was a leaking heater core. It was winter time and I had a nice wood stove cranking out heat. I got that AmsOil all over my hand (no sissy glove days) and was shaking the excess off after laying the core on the work bench. One of the droplets hit the wood heater and caused an ignited puff to happen.
@ThatOliverGuyChris2 күн бұрын
I have heard of guys using kerosene as antifreeze back in the depression era. Or you could do what another mechanic told me about a customer brought in. It was a Moline power unit, riddled with cracks. Turned outcit had straight water in it, and it had froze. When they asked the customer what he used for coolant, he said he got water from the creek, that never freezes.

Good video! What is cross hatch? Thanks for explaining as you go very interesting.
@ThatOliverGuyChris3 күн бұрын
When the engine sleeves are honed, you don't want them perfectly smooth. They hone them with stones going up and down while turning, leaving very small 'scratches' in the surface. The up and down action leaves upward and downward patterns, to where it looks like a cross hatch. Those tiny scratches help the rings to seat, and also hold just a little bit of oil to help lubricate everything as it goes up and down. As everything wears, that cross hatch slowly disappears, so if you can still see it, things are still in good shape. I'll try to do a close up in the next video.

Hey Chris. Did you say your getting new head studs? Or are you using the other new style bolts and washers like in the 1855? I am having the radiator recored for our 1955 2wd and it will well over $1000.00. I have to pull the head off that tractor in the next week or so. I hope just head gasket as well, I thought agco did not off the head gasket any longer. I know there is two different styles deping on the rear dowel pun location.
@ThatOliverGuyChris22 сағат бұрын
I was going to use bolts like the 1855, but I couldn't find them in 9/16. I did find ARPS head studs and nuts, and it looks like they will fit perfectly. Studs are supposed to be better anyway. The non cooler block head gasket still shows as good on the Agco parts website. The turbo version has the dowels in different spots, and there's a couple of different coolant passages. I'd think the cooler block gasket would be the better seller and still be available. Go figure
@aaronkaraszewski274922 сағат бұрын
@ThatOliverGuyChris Ok I knew there was something about the blocks. I forgot the oil cooler block was the difference. You would think that the turbo head gasket would be the better seller for sure. I was looking at arp for studs when I did the 1955 engine, but I couldnt find something that would work. I would definitely prefer studs over bolts. Did you call arp tech line to find the ones you need?
@ThatOliverGuyChris21 сағат бұрын
@aaronkaraszewski2749 I did some googling. I wasn't finding bolts, but I saw some studs for the Ford 6 liter diesel. So then I searched for 9/16 arps head studs and found a seller that listed the Arps part number. From there, it was just a matter of finding who had them for the best price. Amazon for the win. ARPs doesn't list list them individually on their website and say to call or get a catalog. They do have them in a kit, but you get more than you need, and it's cheaper to buy them by the piece.

@ThatOliverGuyChris2 күн бұрын
I haven't gotten a dial indicator out, just ran my fingernail across to see if it catches. It's a case of plausible deniability. If I go and measure, next thing you know, I'm tearing the whole engine down. I'm going to roll with 50 years of running since the engine was last opened up, and the head bolts got a little stretched. I checked my email. I bought my headlights for the 2-155 off ebay. The originals were the same 4x6 headlamps GM used on most of their cars in the early 80s. The silver stripe headlights are just on or off, so I made sure to wire the juice to the high beam post on the bulb.
