Very interesting video. Thanks for sharing it. Removing the water pump you make it look like anyone could do it that smooth but after years of experience helps so much. Very interesting checking the coolant for gases I’ve never seen that before.

Coat all hardware with anti-seize , you will be glad later especially with your own equipment I work at a shipyard push that anti-seize skill to all the mechanics , one thing that you can do is air test the cylinders and see if any bubbles show up in the water side , is time consuming and there are other factors that will come into play as far as how much each cylinder holds air , but you are just looking for air bubbles , 👍 on the tester for exhaust gases , Great video , Ross should get some anti-seize 😀

My son had the number 4 sleeve top crack and caused it to act like a blown gasket, it was a small crack too. I hope it's something simple or at least not a large issue that's causing the air in the system. I think you have some great views of the work. Thanks, good luck with it. I hope you have a good week!

I hope it is a problem that you caught in a very early phase with the head gasket. Our 1750 with over/under was our big tractor for quite a few years. Loved that tractor!Dad heard a tick of some kind with the motor and sold it. He was afraid of the reputation that the 1855 and 1955 had given to the motor.

My kit is similar to yours, but has two chambers. It says turns green on gasoline engines and yellow on diesel. I am having same problem on a newly overhauled 1750 engine in a 1755, long story on why. Used Alliance kit. Hoping this winter to get a better head gasket to put in it. I’m done with that company. Slow learner. That 3rd one have had troubles with. The other 2 were on 401 Fords.

How many tons is your press? I'm mainly asking because a few years ago I bought a water pump for my 1955 but to save money I bought one without the pulley. Automotive shop couldn't swap the pulley out with a 20 ton press. Took it to work and used some sort of hydraulic press. If I remember correctly book calls for 40 ton press but can't seem to find one that uses manual force like yours. I still have the old water pump and would be interested in rebuilding it and putting it on the shelf.

Does the manufacturer of the test kit say that it can be run using water since it is a chemical reaction wouldn’t running the exhaust gases through ethlyne glycol produce a different reaction? Since the test results seem to be inconclusive, I would recommend testing a known good tractor with a diesel engine and seeing if you’ve got the same results with a minor Changed to blue green instead of yellow
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris Ай бұрын
That's a good idea. When I tested it was straight water. The instructions said it may not change as much with diesel, but putting it in the muffler sure made it turn. Stay tuned!

Don't know why people think WD40 is a penetrant, it's a lubricant. Use PB Blaster, CRC, Kroil, melted wax, FreeAll, those are solid penetrant's. I recently picked up one of those heating element tools, saves a lot of time and effort. Chris, it's best to open it up now, run it too much, will only cause bigger and more expensive issue(s) later. If there's a crack in either the head or block, it would show in the oil pan or you'd see oil in the coolant and since there was no oil mixing with the water, you have a blown head gasket or bad fire ring.
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris Ай бұрын
That's what I'm thinking. If it was a cracked sleeve I'd be burning coolant, and as the video shows, the exhaust is clear.

WD40 is not a lubricant or a penetrant,,It's for displacing water,,Hence,,WD ,,Water Displacer 40,,Invented by the US army core of engineers,,Invented for field use,,So engineered metal parts like bearings precision gears,,chains,,,,engine internals ,gearbox internals,,could be left out in the elements without rusting ,,,It forms a protective barrier between the metal and water,,

Might want to try retorquing the head, sounds like when it warms up & everything expands, the leak slows down, maybe a broken head bolt ?
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris Ай бұрын
I suppose that is a possibility. Since I already have a gasket, I think I'll switch it out to be safe. I plan on updating the head bolts like I did on the 1855.

When the thermostat is closed, any compression/ exhaust gases can’t escape therefore you are seeing air and yes, can airlock. Once the thermostat opens, the gasses can escape to the upper radiator tank and it can run that way for quite a while until it gets bad enough to actually drive the water out of the radiator. Will likely need a head gasket ( or possibly a head if it’s cracked) at some point. Head gasket usually gets worse with time. A cracked head may only continue to leak a bit of compression.
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris Ай бұрын
Once that thermostat is open I can run it all day without issue. I'm not going to use it anymore until I can get it fixed.

Hey Chris, so I have a similar situation with our 2wd 1955. But ours makes compression in the cooling system right away all the time. No coolant in the oil either, I as well am figuring head gasket. I have seen the same type of results with the block test kit as you had on other engines. Sometimes the color change is not that great. Other times it is, ours really made it yellow although I couldnt run it long enough to get the tstat to open. It would pop a hole in the radiator or about blow a hose off. So thats one of the projects this winter is a head gasket. Hopefully thats all that it is!
Off with your HEAD! Let's stop those bubbles in the 1750
