'R' on the solenoid is for 'resistor'; 'S' is for 'start'. The 'R' terminal sends 12 volts to the ballast resistor while the solenoid is energized to bypass the resistor for better spark while cranking. The 'S' terminal receives 12 volts from the ignition/starter switch to engage the starter.

Thanks! They should have marked it I for ignition, like on the key switch.

So i got pretty lucky when I bought a super 77 diesel that sat for 15ish years. 😬 We pumped the fuel until we heard it through the return line in the tank, a couple little sniffs and it came back to life. Everyone at the estate sale was looking.
@ThatOliverGuyChris6 күн бұрын
I did about the same with my 66 diesel, except the metering valve was sticking, and it took off. I shut the fuel off to kill it. A little fidgeting with the governor, and it freed up and has run fine ever since.

It's fun to watch these old tractors going back together, the Super 88 is not something I've seen much of. I didn't know about the PTO clutch and how the adjustment worked. Good job on it so far, good luck with the remainder of the reassembly. Have a good day!

Chris, awesome to finally see some mechanical videos of the older Oliver’s. I love those Bosch system tractors. We have a 77, 88, and 2 880s, all diesels. When they are running good they sound good. Especially with a oem muffler. I know what you mean about getting those pumps rebuilt. WOW! The sadness was real when I wrote the check when we had a 880 pump rebuilt. It had to get the shaft rechromed. Talk about EXPENSIVE! Great Video as always. Bailey @ The Oliver Acreage

We built our oil injector out of black pipe. We mainly used it on the Turbo models to make sure the turbo had oil for the shaft to float on. Otherwise sticking fingers in the turbo air intake and holding the turbine wheel until the Oil Pressure was up, well it worked, but it always made one think of a high-speed fingernail trimmer. Some used a pencil with an eraser end to hold the turbine wheel. We just thought blasting a couple quarts of oil in through the oil galley plug just a few seconds before turning the key on to start and watching the pressure gauge come up. We always thought about putting a small electric oil pump that one could switch on with a pushbutton to pressure up the system before starting and pump oil through it for a minute or so after shutdown to prevent the coking of oil in the turbo. Getting farmers to let the turbo engines idle for a couple of minutes after pulling them hard was hard to do, at least till they had to have the turbo replaced. We were ahead of our time on that idea as later such a kit came out on the high-performance engine market. I did get a pre-oiler pump from an aircraft salvage but it was 28v so when I tried to use it on a turbo installation on a Volvo Diesel, the 12v battery just did not provide enough oil to work. Great re-run video. Hope you did not have any family or friend emergencies requiring not filming.

This video had just been waiting in the wings. I wanted to save it closer to when I was able to fire it up so everyone didn't have to wonder if it worked. I'm going to use a flexible radiator hose for the intake for now, but I'm still hoping to find an oem hose.
@bigun44710 күн бұрын
@@ThatOliverGuyChris In my demented/demensia probably mind, I keep seeing a hose like that that was used on GM products lower hoses. They had a 90 at one end but had a long distance to travel to the lower hose outlet on the radiator. They had enough distance between the engine and radiator that the fan had a lot of spacers and the shroud extended back quite a way. One could simply unbolt the bell housing from the back of the engine and if careful get the engine out. 50s-70s stuff.

Napa and other good auto parts stores should carry 90-degree hoses. Get one that is a little longer than you need and cut off the exrra from each end.

As a more serious comment, the pto clutch and collar look remarkably similar to the hand clutch in a WD or 45 Allis.

Did the Super 88 come with two different rear end ratios? We had one that maxed out at 8 mph in 6th gear.
@ThatOliverGuyChris10 күн бұрын
Yes. They had a low speed option. Our neighbors had one, and 8 mph was the top speed. On your serial number, the last 3 digits were the transmission code. A regular speed Super 88 was 801. The low-speed option is 804.

Lol, not yet. We learned that tuition goes up as you move up. She had enough credit from advanced placement classes in high school that she would count as a sophomore during her freshman year. They actually sent us a bill for the difference. We'll save more from her graduating early, but it made me put some more money in the jar!
@Olliesuper6610 күн бұрын
Hey Chris on my old 660 I can’t get the transmission go go into second range do you know what to do? Thanks!
@ThatOliverGuyChris10 күн бұрын
On the front of the transmission is what looks like a steel cup bolted on. The shift rails are under that cap, and behind that is a block with the detent balls that hold the rails from popping out of gear. The range rail is the lowest of the 3 rails, and if moisture gets in that cap, it follows that bottom rail in and goes down into the detent ball and spring, rusting them in place. Take that cap off and clean up the part of the rail that is sticking out. Try to get it to take some penetrating oil in there. On the bottom side of the block the rails go through is a screw cap. You can take that cap out and that might let the spring free up. You can also slide the whole detent block off the front of the rails, just be prepared for the detent balls to come shooting out. You'll probably have to pull the shifter out and put it back in after it's reassembled to make sure it's in the correct spot after all the giggling that goes on.

My 1956 Super 88 doesn't have the filter just before the lift pump. Did someone remove that, or did the earlier ones not have that one? The kid who had the Super 88 birthday cake was watching how to fix a Super 88 but i guess it's to boring for a 3 year old 😂. I guess i gotta do all the fixing myself for a few years.
@ThatOliverGuyChris10 күн бұрын
I bet it was removed. My dad's 56 Super 88 diesel has it, and now that I think of it, that was the only filter on the early 88 diesels. They added the canister behind the injection pump later. I bet the 3 year old needs more action. Throw on a Herman video. 😆
@jamieebersole675510 күн бұрын
@ThatOliverGuyChris I think there may even be a bracket bolted to the block for that filter housing. I guess I need to keep my eyes open for one so I can put it back to how it was supposed to be. Maybe I need to put on Herman videos for him while I'm working on Oliver's so the tools don't start getting legs 🤣

So since it's a Super, are you going to paint the wheels red? I have a Super 77 diesel and that paint scheme appeals to me better than the green wheels. As I understand, dealers would paint the wheels red if the customer requested it.
@ThatOliverGuyChris10 күн бұрын
This one is a 57, so the wheels were factory red. The current plan is to save as much original paint as possible, so I won't be painting the wheels. The tractor belongs to a good friend, and that's what he wants. We'll assess the paint once everything that is primer has color on it and see if it's going to look ok or if we need to paint the rest.
