It might seem crazy if you think of it as nothing more than a parking brake. However, if you think of it as an emergency brake then it makes a little more sense why the government might require it to work in order to pass inspection. The emergency brake is cable actuated, enabling it to stop your car if your hydraulic breaks fail. I'm not here to make a case as to whether or not a non-operational emergency brake should disallow a vehicle from being operated though, I just wanted to add a bit of context. If I were tasked with coming up with a list of systems that were required to function on a vehicle before it could be registered for use on public roads, I think headlights and brake lights would be understandably near the top of the list, while something as insignificant as a dome light seems almost crazy to even consider. Whether or not I would ultimately decide an auxiliary braking system to stop the car should the primary system fail would make the final list, it certainly does not seem crazy to even consider.

I was a NYS inspector when they took ball joints off the checklist. A local TV station did a story on how some garages were ripping people off since the lower ball joints on American cars had a little play from new. Rather than going after the garages - poof - it just left the inspection. Of course those were the days when all ball joints had grease fittings, not like today where they can fail due to lack of factory grease. On the other hand most cars barely made 100k or ten years so they hit the scrap yard before getting too dangerous…

Yep, once upon a time here in the PRC (People's Republic of California) you could swap an older motor into a newer car, because the emission requirements followed the year of the motor, not the vehicle. It had no catalytic converters from the factory and they provided an adaptor to put on the leaded fuel pump nozzle so it would fit in the small hole in the filler neck. He drove it across country in the US then put it on a boat to New Zealand. That car was huge and had the steering wheel on the wrong (left) side for driving in New Zealand.

Great video. I doubt many mechanics would have used salvage parts and reused the old bearing to save the customer money. Good for you.

I remember LEADED GAS! I am a 67 model. It was EPA outlawed in our state in 1974 ish. It Hung around for the older cars till 1976? Boom! Gone!

I've heard talk that some aviation gas is leaded, not certain though but i have heard of 110LL, 110 octane, low lead.

I was a gas attendant at my uncle's gas station and do remember having to ask if the customer wanted leaded or unleaded gas. By the way, I'm only 60. LOL. Love the channel.

I, too, always use my parking brake. I rarely stop without it being put into use. Only times would be at traffic lights when my green signal is only a few seconds away.

I remember when leaded fuel was fazed out back in the mid 1970's. The main reason was because the lead would foul the catalytic converter not because the emissions of the vehicle would include lead compounds. By 1975 most cars had a catalytic converter so leaded fuel could not be used. I also remember working on carburetors as well as ignition points. That was back in the days when you could open your hood and actually see the engine.

Funny you should mention fuel inlet restrictors and 70 together. I am 71, and yes, I remember them all, including king pins on orstrayan cars up to 65 or thereabouts.

Even though I’m on vacation down in Florida I’m loving the videos and still watching them 😅. I agree NY state inspections can be a joke most of the time, I never messed with inspections and passed a car that would fail especially since NY loves their inspectors and if god forbid something was broken and the customer or friend ended up in an accident or worse it’s your ass and license on the line none the less the amount of trauma your gonna go through all for $21 no thanks!!!! I use my parking brake everytime I put my car into park to take the strain off the transmission and the mounts. I always advocate to use the parking brake.

One thing is for sure Eric probably doesn't need iron supplements with all of the iron rust he breathes in. Yes Eric I'm frickin 70 and I pumped gas at an Esso station at the time they changed the name to Exxon. We were a full service station meaning you could come in get a dollars worth of gas and make me check all of your fluids and pump your tires up in the pouring rain. "The good old days"

They will pull licenses from guys trying to do the job right but then give one to guys that make every effort to circumvent the laws.
