I was a NYS inspector when they took ball joints off the checklist. A local TV station did a story on how some garages were ripping people off since the lower ball joints on American cars had a little play from new. Rather than going after the garages - poof - it just left the inspection. Of course those were the days when all ball joints had grease fittings, not like today where they can fail due to lack of factory grease. On the other hand most cars barely made 100k or ten years so they hit the scrap yard before getting too dangerous…

I'm 57. My first car was a 1964 Buick Skylark that Dad had purchased new. Handed down through two other kids before (what was left of it) reached me. Ran leaded gas. The other car I had access to was Dad's 1976 Suburban (with the ole 400 ci engine), also leaded gas. First experience I had with unleaded was a 1982 Toyota 4x4 long bed pickup I bought used in 1985. Had the fill nozzle restrictor for unleaded gas. For those that don't know, the gas station's fuel pump nozzles (the part you stick in your car) were different sizes for leaded vs unleaded gas. Leaded gas pumps had larger pump nozzles. Unleaded (obviously) had smaller diameter nozzles. Unleaded fuel only cars had a metal disc just inside the fill neck with a hole in it (which contained a flapper valve) just big enough to let an unleaded fuel nozzle in, while rejecting the larger leaded fuel nozzle.

I remember when leaded fuel was fazed out back in the mid 1970's. The main reason was because the lead would foul the catalytic converter not because the emissions of the vehicle would include lead compounds. By 1975 most cars had a catalytic converter so leaded fuel could not be used. I also remember working on carburetors as well as ignition points. That was back in the days when you could open your hood and actually see the engine.

For the Glasses issues: Get a pair of bifocal lenses and wear them for a few days. If they are measured and fitted correctly you should be able to adjust to them in a couple of days. If you don't want to wear glasses, you could probably try bifocal contact lenses. If you don't like the first pair of contact lenses they give you, don't worry. Contact lenses are fairly different across multiple brands and eye shapes etc.

When I bought a new Silverado pick up in 2019, I soon realized it had electric parking brakes. Great, I thought, just more complexity added to a vehicle. Until I did my rear brakes, the electric parking brakes use a small electric motor to activate the disk brake pads to hold the car, thus eliminating all the silly parking brake shoes and linkage and the internal brake drum. So much easier to do the brake job. I’ll worry about the little motor failing when it happens.

My daughter lives in Pittsburgh, where there are no horizontal surfaces. Though I cautioned her not to do it, she relied on her automatic transmission to park her car, and - you guessed it - eventually broke the parking pawl in the transmission. She immediately became a parking brake adherent with her new car.

Eric, I’m a little mobile guy doing jobs here in neighboring Taxachusetts or aka California II Springfield area, about almost a 3 hour hike east of you. Rotted out backing plates are very common so if someone has a parking brake I cross my fingers that I don’t have to replace any of it, because most people won’t want to even when I recommend it. I had a few Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep vehicles where the parking brakes wouldn’t work because of crusty backing plates flexing under the tension of the parking brake. Found out the hard way when the parts cannon fired off a few rounds and the backing plates were the last thing on the list. You can only imagine how horrible inspections can be here, we’ve got very similar inspection laws, I’ve witnessed a lot and seen a lot by working for a scummy used car seller which was a disaster that I nearly couldn’t avoid, but now I’m free. I actually sort of often see a lot of vehicles with rotted frames and bodies like horribly bad, especially with the used car seller guy I did work for…not a fan of rust, especially after a rusty frame bit my finger and gave me seven stitches
