I miss it because its an experience I never got to ride, much like the sky way buckets that went across the park. Unlike Sky Way which you can't really make out anymore in the parks, The People Mover track has remained dormant for years and I wonder why the track and structure still exists if nothing is being planned. It out shut down in the early 90s with Rocket Rods and never came back. We want people mover back because its apart of Disney history and I hate to see the track just get worse with age. It's not like the track can't or couldn't be fixed. It would take time and would require sections if not majority of Tomorrowland shut down, but it can be done. The hardest part is that like its sister track at DW, it also goes through a majority of buildings which the tracks are still there for. Really there is a lot in Tomorrowland I'd personally like something done with or bought back. The rotating building of Launch Bay/Innoventions, the outside que line area for Space Mountain (used to be the main entrance que/escalator up, then turned into a concert area), the area/theater for "Honey I Shrunk The Audience/Captain EO" which I thin has been completely closed for some reason, ect.

I went to Grad night at Disneyland in 1994. They shut down the Peoplemover during the event because of the "Adult" activities that was going on during the grand circle tour. I also have a cousin that works at Disneyland, & said that cast members called the Peoplemover the "People Maker".😬 Hello from Phoenix Arizona!🔥

Since more than a few teenagers lost their lives when they attempted to jump from one People Mover car to another,* the cast members in Tomorrowland used to refer to the attraction as the "People Re-Mover." *From friction with the track, over time the wheels on the bottom of the People Mover cars literally became razor-sharp. People attempting to jump from one car would lose their grip, fall beneath the vehicle, and have their limbs severed by the wheels. Nasty.

@@FleshGolem420 Yeah, this is one of the long-standing rumors I've heard over the years. Like with any dark, secluded spot - if a young couple (from teens to early 20s) can find a place to... canoodle and not get caught, you bet your sweet bippy they'll take it! Peoplemover for sure, and I've also heard that, supposedly, when Journey Thru Inner Space was still open, it was _also_ a favorite spot for young couples wanting some private time to the point that it earned the nickname "Journey Thru Intercourse". Horizons was also supposedly another favorite spot for young couples. I don't know how true those rumors are since I wasn't there (I wasn't born until 1987), and while I understand the logistics of the _how,_ what confuses me is how they'd manage it with the ride vehicles being pretty close together (especially in scenes of the ride where the ride vehicles would be right next to each other - like the Seance Room in the Haunted Mansion) and how they managed to not get spotted by other guests. Like, I get how with Splash Mountain, the people who wanted to take it to Flash Mountain would sit near the back of the vehicle behind others if they were rogue flashers... but Journey Thru Inner Space used the Atom Mobiles (what we know as "Doom Buggies") which are completely open, unlike the People Mover vehicles which were more closed off and usually pretty far away from other park guests so couples would be obscured, so while one person could be sat atop the other's lap... other guests are going to see what's happening.

Yup- Old People Mover DL fan here. The greatest part of the people mover was the fact that it went up and down and around the other attractions. One of the best parts was when it went over the autopia, so pretty back around the trees and weaving in and out with the monorail. We remember the old days when the "sculpture" as you say on top of the loading/unloading dock was the old "Rocket Jets" ride- so fun as it was so high in the air! (like the Astro Orbiter in WDW) And, just like at WDW, you would have to get off the people mover and stand in line again to ride a second time. Thanks for the memories! 😀

I was riding on the People Mover in the late 1980's right when a show started on the Tomorrow Land Terrace stage. To my surprise it was taping for a tv special with UB40. We then went into the Space Mountain Tunnel and when we came out Genesis was on stage filming. By the time I was off the ride the Terrace was lowering and the TV taping was over. Happy to see the parts I did see live.

Recently I went to Disney World, I had not gone to a Disney Park in 6 years. I discovered this channel 2 years ago and I've watched every video of yours since and I've always related to your perspective of the parks,p. The "Living with the Land is a masterpiece" video from about two years ago was quite relatable, I didn't know that someone else loved the ride with such passion as I did, then I discovered the whole Peoplemover fanatism and couldn't agree more, I actually went 3 times when I went to Magic Kingdom. I've learned everything about the Disney Parks from your videos, so when my family and I went to the 4 parks I did a stop every 3 seconds to say a little bit of trivia, like talking about "Go Away Green", the smelletizers, the abandoned Discovery Island, the Disco Yeti's origin, the cancelled Fuji Coaster and a lot of EPCOT trivia. Going and to the parks and finally talking about everything that I learned on this channel throughout the last years was excellent, and I have to thank you, Dallin for all the great content.

It was actually the opposite side of that gift shop is where the entrance and escalator used to be. Kinda directly under the path of the peoplemover track. They changed the whole base of that area when they changed it to the Rocket Rods, which moved the entrance of the queue to where Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters is now. (I was there as an annual passholder in the 80s) Edit: The Lunching Pad was the quick service snack stand that used to be where that gift shop is now.

@@maddercat yeah, the churro cart in Tomorrowland is where the entrance and exit escalator was located right next to each other. Whenever my family would split up at Disneyland, we would always meet at the People Mover entrance. It’s hard to picture it now, since the Rocket Rods queue took you underground so you would climb stairs underneath the loading deck. The way to rebuild the Peoplemover is to go with a completely different approach. Make the cars independently solar powered. That way you're not relying upon the track for power. But Disney doesn't seem to realize that for all the cost of fixing the Peoplemover, it's still cheaper than building a new attraction since they only have to lay a new track in place of the old one.
@sandy737
@sandy737 Жыл бұрын
From my understanding it's not just the track that's the issue, when the now failed Rocket Rods that replaced the people mover took place, the shear force of the Rocket Rods drive vehicles going fast and slow caused irreversible damage to a lot of the supporting structure of the ride. From what I heard they would need to break down huge pieces of track and structure throughout the park to even get it to a stable state before even a ride can be positioned. The damage is said to not be as severe that people can walk around the structure, but to place another ride would be way to expensive. This is the main reason why Disney has not put another ride there, just too unsafe from the damage of Rocket Rods.
@jankk
@jankk Жыл бұрын
TBF, Tomorrowland would benefit from being shut down for a year or two & completely remodeled/rebuilt like they did with Fantasyland in the early 80s, with a more cohesive theme & look and new & updated rides and attractions (like, maybe it’s time to replace the carousel building with a Tron ride). They could take advantage of the closure to rebuild/replace the damaged tracks for a fully upgraded Peoplemover experience that has the relaxing feel & leisurely length of the original with improved ride technology & special effects tunnels.
@sandy737
@sandy737 Жыл бұрын
@@jankk That would be awesome! But I doubt the board will approve such a massive project and close such big part of thier main park for such an extended time. The parks are doing fine without the upgrade to Fantasyland, until that changes I doubt the board will approve such a massive project other then expanding Fantasyland like they've done with hollywood studios and animal kingdom.

@@jankk I wish they would move all the Star Wars stuff out of Tomorrowland, since SW happened "a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away,". It would have been really easy to put a land across the street of S. Harbor between Katella and HWY5. 3rd gate interconnected with paths/tunnels to and from DL and CA. The only problem with Disney's way of doing things is the proverbial habitual shutdowns for "improvemernts". There are much better ways and shorter timelines. But when you can drop $1B like its a $20 you do you.

Dalin, the Disneyland Peoplemover station is identical to the WDW Peoplemover station. You had the Rocket Jets on the roof with the Elevator where Tomorrow Landing is. The speed ramps were in front where the Churro cart is today, & you were able to stay on your mover if there was not a line of people waiting to be moved. The Peoplemover is my most sentamental & favorite ride at Disneyland with the Skyway 2nd because of my dad. He had extreme health issues & could only ride the easy going rides. I spent MANY laps on the Peoplemover with my dad while watching Disneyland underneath us. Sadly, dad passed away in December of 2022, & I would love to have just one more lap with him for old times sake on the Peoplemover.❤ Hello from Phoenix Arizona!🔥

The People Mover was a great ride because, unlike so much of the park, it was a place where you could go to relax, and the cars were small enough that you could get away from people that were not in your party. A little relaxing mental break from the constant overstimulation of the senses that is Disneyland. The Railroad is the closest thing to this that remains, but it can still get packed and busy with constant stops and noise, people loading and uloading. Whereas the People Mover was a closed loop, so you were guaranteed an entire ride of relaxing views, some peace and quiet. Plus, it had some interesting bits, like the World of Tron but for the most part it was a way to disconnect for a few minutes and recenter yourself for the rest of the day ahead. The attendants would allow you to ride around again depending on how busy they were. Sometimes it seemed like everyone wanted on the People Mover and the line would force them to keep people... umm... moving. But there were definitely times where you basically had the ride to yourself, and they were fine letting you go again. Pretty much like just about any ride in the park if you timed it right.

I remember riding the people mover as a kiddo (I'm presently 37 and was born in Los Angeles, went a lot as a kid). I didn't remember it circling around Autopia, so that was neat to see again. I mostly remembered passing through Star Tours, the Star Traders gift shop, and one tunnel the track went through had a light effect to make it kinda like you're going through a warp tunnel. It's been SO long since I last rode it and I'm sure I didn't even go in the last year it was open, so even longer for me since it was last opened. I miss it so much and I'm right there with you to get it brought back (of course they'd have to reinforce all the track again.....)

So, imagine being on the parking tram and rolling above tomorrow land. I could see how older people would like it, but my 13 year son thought it was the most boring ride ever. I am an old hand at going to DL and from my experience, the cast members would only kick you off the ride if it was super busy. If there weren't a lot of people waiting, you could ride it a few times in a row if you'd like, but that was in the 80's when attendance was really low. The other thing that you didn't mention was the TRON portion of the attraction. That was where Pizza Planet is now (I think) it used to be above Mission to Mars around that area. (I haven't been to DL in a really long time). My favorite memory of the Peoplemover, and it might sound odd is the track to get you up to the ride vehicles. The incline was a motorized ramp, like at the exit of Haunted Mansion, but you could REALLY feel the rollers that were moving the track. I don't know why even as a teenager I always got a kick out of the bumps on the ramp on the PeopleMover, but I did.

This is great! I had memories of riding the people moved as a kid but I couldn’t visualize most of it. Thank you for sharing the home videos from back in the day and exploring how the track is now. This was one of my fav things and I loved looking down into the arcade as I rode it.

Hold on, what if they actually turned the track into an elevated walkway with fun little exhibits around the old track. Low cost, low maintenance but still kind of cool. Maybe have a secret bar on the upper deck.

I've thought that a walkthrough version of the ride would be kind of neat, but I think they can't because of all the steep inclines and declines. Plus, what if you want to leave in a hurry? The track is kind of long and doesn't really have any other places to enter or leave.
@nf1nk

@@adamslater7486 If you were really going to do it, the smart way would be to have several stairs on and off at various points. It wouldn't be one experience but a series of trail sections you could do as you please. I would imagine that center section as you enter Tomorrowland would be crowded but the section over Autopia would be a bit sparse.

It's just such a chill ride, constantly moving line, good to do when you need to get off your feet for a few minutes. It should come back in some form or fashion. The one at Disney World was one of my favorites because it's just so chill, and good to do when the Florida skies opened up

I remember it circling through the original carousel of progress viewing room that housed the Experimental Community of Tomorrow model (EPCOT) back in the 70s, also there was a TRON overlay in the 80s before star tours opened when it replaced journey through inner space

I live a few miles from Disneyland, I grew up there, as a kid, with all the kid rides in the park, the PeopleMover was my favorite, I rode it every chance I got. It was so cool to go behind Star Tours, to look out and see the arcade buzzing with life, to get a tiny glimpse of Space Mountain and it’s creepy space sounds. The Tron part was friggin scary as a little kid though. On the other side it was cool to ride around the Autopia area, and see the CircleVision theater from above. It was weird when Rocket Rods came out and that building became the overflow queue, it was actually interesting looking in there, but what a terrible ride. And now of course it’s Buzz Lightyear. But yeah, it was such a relaxing ride, and a peek behind the scenes, there was just a magic to it, a similar magic to what the 80’s Epcot rides that are gone now also had.

Actually that store was always there, its been used before for Radio Disney and before that was a food counter service. The elevators for the Rocket Jets was just to the left where the popcorn cart is now. The escalators were at the front underneath the revolving sign/staircase.

I'd bet there's a parallel dimension out there in which the People Mover at the Magic Kingdom was turned into a Rocket Rods type attraction and thus was closed and the channel Onhand Disney covers it in the same fashion as this channel.

We used to get on the people mover and seriously stay on it for like two hours without getting off on week days. Sometimes we would bring our food with us and they would let us eat lunch while riding. So wish they would bring it back.

The Skyway is my PeopleMover! I definitely had ridden the Disneyland PeopleMover as a kid, but in my opinion, it pales in comparison to the Disneyland Skyway. I had so many wonderful experiences on the Skyway, including my very first Disneyland memory from when I was 4. Nobody ever talks about the Skyway anymore, and it makes me sad. How about a Skyway video, huh?

Tomorrowland was the first land that I'd go to. I went as a teen in 1972 and 1973.Then, Tomorrowland was vibrant and felt cutting-edge. Riding the Peoplemover through Adventures Thru Inner Space, Carousel Of Progress, Submarine Voyage and Autopia felt special (dare I say magical?). There was so much activity in Tomorrowland! The Rocket Jets were in just the right place and added to the energy. I wish I could take a time machine trip back to relive the magic. Disney needs to tear down Tomorrowland and build something more purpose-built.

Footage of ealy 90's Tomorrowland melts my heart. Miss the Peoplemover so much! Also, the Cicle-Vision theater! I went there as a kid, only I don't know when. The only time I went there, they were playing "Wonders of China." Doens't really narrow down the timeframe that much. But it looked in the home movie here like there was seating. When I went, there was just railing. And I've never been to WDW, so it's not a confused memory.

When we would go to Disneyland in the 90s. We would go with my aunt that is wheelchair bound. We would stay on the peoplemover as long as she wanted since to get her off they would have to stop the ride for us to lift her out and place her back in her chair. We normally did it 3 times.

The only downfall...kids would throw stuff at people on the ground. Got hit with ketchup while standing in line for the submarine ride. Good times.

Yes, you got kicked off at the end--I feel like the practice of staying on a ride for multiple loops is a more recent phenomena (but also, there was rarely not a line as I recall, so they always needed the space for new riders).

No matter how many videos I watch of the WDW people mover, they do not make me want to go all the way to the east coast to ride it, at all. Me and my mom would ride the og Disneyland one when we wanted a break from the rest of the family. Such a precious moment.you should do a video on why the Disneyland PM was infinitely better than the WDW PM.
