I don’t think Guy Mezger gets enough credit for the early days of MMA. He gets overshadowed by a lot of other guys (the Shamrocks, Bas, Royce, Severn, Tank) but I think Guy, as well as a few others, get overlooked a lot.

The most over hyped fighter to me is oyce Gracie (I know his name is Royce but I'm poking fun at the adepts of the Gracie cult who parrot the Brazilian pronunciation...) Yesterday I was watching the quite sad Fedor's last fight, but when all the legends of the sport came on the octagon to honor Fedor and pay respect it was quite a moment and I'm sure to have seen a picogram of emotion on Fedor's granite face. oyce camel face with that oversize denture trying to intrude in every framing of the show was the apex of bad taste and creepiness. It was hard to watch. You could clearly see the "true" legends of the sport ashamed for him. oyce is maybe the first artificially hyped "athlete" of combat sports history. Certainly Lawyer Gracie (oiron) and his minions have made a great job (a Brazilian job, but they were more than eleven for sure).

I know nothing about MMA or wrestling. The commentary giving your intentions, showing problems and possibilities make it a lot more enjoyable for me. The silence makes it relaxing, no distractions. 12 Fights left. Thank you. Those leg locks and the possible damage...had my ankle once at 90° swollen up like a football. I feel that. I don't even want to know about the knee.

yeah, Guy had real issue before I met him in 06. He told me he had two strokes from the ANSAID he was prescribed. I forget which one it was. He looked and sounded fine but he was fully retired from fighting and working for Chuck Norris. He took care of my licensing for me. I just thought he was a great guy. but he was in great pain from injuries.

Me and Guy had the same bjj instructor at this time, and he tells us a story about them all hanging out in Japan, I think at this fight, and Bas sneaking up behind him and getting him into a RNChoke, all in good fun, lol. Said Bas was crazy. Surprised at how ineffective Guy was on the ground. Always assumed he was a little more advanced, but I guess he was way more of a striker and wrestler.

These are great (commentating on your own fights). Unique in the world of MMA? Maybe. You were a "complete" fighter in your skill set and competency. Really amazing ground game/ defense (among the best I've ever seen). I guess during these days (or in this league) the rules were no closed fist punches to the face/ head? Nowadays fights seem to end to early because someone gets in a vulnerable position, and then they are met with a barrage of face/ head strikes and the ref ends the fight.

He mentions in one of his fights (I'm paraphrasing) that he would have really liked to strike on the ground, but then there were many times where he would have been at a disadvantage as well, in which case he'd change up his strategy. Long story short, he would adjust his technique to adapt to ground-and-pound.

He would of done badly. By how bad his wrestling is on the feet it looks like he just trained ground and striking. However it worked for him because there was no ground and pound. I'm sure if the rules were different he would of had to train differently.
