The most interesting thing to come out of this for me, is the definition of "Hall of Fame" It seems there are 2 schools of thought, and a dictionary definition. Dictionary definition is a place where people who became famous in a specific field are displayed by a prominent body of that field to remember them and their fame. Then you have a grading system of: 1. They have to have done something of some merit over a long period of time and dedicated themselves to specific field. There must be some bench mark of excellence recognised by "experts" in the field. (in the case of wrestling the feats are artistic and thus subjective) 2. If they are remembered long enough after they are retired (deceased) they must have had some level of fame, and/or memorability to be included or a remembered fondly enough to think they deserve recognition. So Brian said that "that means you should put everyone in the half of fame" and he is right. There seems to be disparity in what some people think a "Hall of Fame" is for. For many it seems to be a place so hold up legends, to remember only the very, very best of a time or era and forget everyone else. For others it is just a place to remember old participants of a field that are remembered fondly enough. My own personal view is a sort of Venn diagram of the concepts. I think if you were largely consider as great by those in the "know" and fans alike, then you enter the HoF, but also I think there are especially in wrestling work horse characters that were never champion, never really hit the main stage but did a good job, were very good at what they did and were memorable enough to be put in to a half of records to record their name and achievements. Someone like Jake Roberts was never a real main event guy, but is certainly a legend in the industry for one reason or another. He should absolutely be remembered fondly in years to come by future wrestling historians and fans for the work he did. Other people can probably give 100+ examples of people that had a big enough impact on their entertainment/viewing pleasure to be remembered fondly enough to mark their career in some way. It would be interesting to see what other people think a HoF is and how entrants should be determined, Brian seems to be very much they have to be a giant of the industry and a HoF should only be a select few people. I can understand that idea, but I feel like sometimes people forget the greatest wrestlers, people like Mr Perfect, where not always main event guys and were not 500 times champion but still deserve to be remembered....would you really remember John Cena more fondly than Mr Perfect?....I don't dislike Cena at all and think he was a talent...but he was face of the company, main event, champ more times than hot dinners...but does that make him more HoF worthy? Just on that alone...seeing as Vince decided he was main event and champ that many times, despite some people not agreeing with the decision.

The voters are running it like the F4W board-if you aren't 100% woke & saying how great the modern product (especially AEW) is then the little Hitler's modding there ban you without any warning or reason. Most of Omega's votes came from Japan (which isn't a surprise). He had a big impact in his years in Japan and is basically why NJPW made any inroads at all into America. From a Japanese perspective that's a massive, massive achievement. Also the people in Japan look at his entire body of work, including DDT (where he mattered), his work with Ibushi etc. He probably shouldn't have gone in early, but he's far from the first person to get in after several years on the ballot (this is his third).

Kenny is in the Hall of fame after 3 good years in NJPW. Edge and Goldberg aren't in the Hall of Fame at all. I rest my case. EDIT: I don't really care about Dave's opinion, but it is funny that Goldberg, and even Edge, have had WAYYYY more significance, drawing power, and notable matches than Omega has.
@Smeeeeeghead3 жыл бұрын
@Khalil Salam You saying "Stupid casuals" tells me all that I need to know about your opinions. As if Kenny and his NJPW are better than what the "Stupid Casuals" watch, as opposed to it being just your opinion. You think your a "better" fan than people who watched Edge and Goldberg when wrestling was huge in the attitude era, when in reality both groups like different things. Your comment reeks of elitism and "I'm too good for that CASUAL PLEBEIAN WWF! Stone Cold?! Pheh! I'd rather watch guys do flips in bingo halls!"
@Smeeeeeghead3 жыл бұрын
@Khalil Salam American markets are bigger than Japanese markets and Meltzer, AEW, and WWE are all based in America. This was talking about opinions in the first place if you actually read my initial comment saying how Meltzer has his opinion but my opinion is that Goldberg and Edge are way more significant, because they sold more tickets and had a bigger cultural impact.

If y'all looked at his achievements OBJECTIVELY and put your feelings towards him aside, then why doesn't he deserve this? - Involved in multiple matches that a significant number of people (not just Meltzer) consider to be amongst the greatest of all time. - No Kenny Omega means no AEW, once again put your feelings about him or the product to the side. AEW has changed the landscape of pro-wrestling, consistently defeated NXT in the weekly ratings, and has had massive success. - Kenny Omega could be argued as the main reason that NJPW became the 2nd biggest promotion in the world before AEW came along. He gave them big exposure for Western wrestling fans. - Bullet Club (most important faction in wrestling of the last decade) was at its peak in terms of popularity and business under the leadership of Kenny Omega and following his ascension to heavyweight in NJPW. - If you use championship success as a metric (not my most important but I'm sure some people will) then he is so far the only Gaijin in history to win the G1 Climax, and has won all the top titles in NJPW, top champion in Mexico (AAA Mega Champion), and will likely become the next AEW World Champion. For those who say him wrestling blow up dolls or whatever ruins any legitimacy he has, then you need to realise most of the greatest of all time have done something that is considered "silly". If you personally don't like that style of wrestling, then that's fine. But just because you or Jim Cornette aren't fans of it, then it doesn't make it "not wrestling" or whatever argument you say. I would say his accomplishments so far would warrant a HOF worthy career, but I agree with Brian Last in that I wouldn't vote him in yet as his career is still alive, and there's a lot of people not in that should be in already. I'm genuinely curious as to why you don't think he shouldn't be in the HOF for reasons that don't boil down to "I'm not a fan of him".

There's a reason why a majority of wrestlers usually get inducted in the hall of fame at either the end or closing to the end of their career. Imagine if Randy Orton or John Cena was in the WWE Hall of Fame in 2010. And I also doubt many retired wrestlers give two shits about Dave and his newsletter. The only wrestlers that care are the ones who are marks for themselves and want to impress a guy who's an even bigger mark for himself

As a younger Shirley Crabtree, he could work, but by the time he was famous as Big Daddy, he had the workrate of El Gigante and exposed the business every time he got in the ring. Jay Leno beating up Hulk Hogan was more credible

Dave Meltzer's personal hall of fame is a bit odd anyway because it really should be for people when their career is over and their track record is there for all to see. Regardless of it it was for drawing power or in ring talent over either various years in the same promotion or across multiple ones. Not for people you want to promote as Omega while good in Japan for a brief time he hasn't really brought any drawing power to AEW and has been underwhelming at times. From everything said about him when he was in NJPW from Meltzer it was like he was the one single handedly putting on these amazing matches when in reality it was the booking and his opponents that made them good.

Everybody blabs about Okada matches. But is Okada Kazuchika in the WON Hall Of Fame? I don't care if you think Kenny is better than Kazuchika, Okada is objectively more successful. Okada was a golden boy of Toryumon from the start, he had a sucky stint in TNA but the rest is mostly gold. Kenny cannot say the same. What if I did care? If you like Omega's style, Kota Ibushi does it better. Is Kota Ibushi in? Why was Omega even on the ballot? Or maybe I'm looking at this the wrong way. Maybe since Meltzer has to live with the fact Carlos Colon got voted in he deserves to have his favorite wrestler in too. I just liked things better when his favorite wrestler was Mitsuharu Misawa. Perhaps I'm just blinded by nostalgia but damn I never got the Omega ball sucking! Low Ki was never ridden this hard. Christopher Daniels, Bryan Danielson, Prince Devitt, AJ Styles not even Davey Richards.
