You are a saint for answering all of these questions in the comments! I have one of my own... I'm replacing my crankcase cover and found that the CKP sensor grommet uses a different type of sealant than the one that's supposed to be applied to the mating surface. My question is... how should I apply the sealant to this grommet? Just on the mating surface, or around it, or where it seats in the crankcase cover?
@TheMotorcycleBoss4 жыл бұрын
No problem! That's what I'm here for. In that instance, depending on the manufacturer, you are supposed to pull the grommet out off of the cover, apply a light coating of silicone sealant around the entire grommet. Push the grommet back into place keeping in mind to ensure that there is silicone sealant on the grommet side that will be in contact with the crankcase. That is how it is supposed to be done but of course, everyone has different opinions on this. The information I gave you was what I had learned from Kawasaki themselves as the standard procedure. I hope this helps! Good luck with your project!

That’s exactly how much silicone you should use with gasket. Even thinner. And blue is not the best. RTV Black is for oil. Blue is for water and antifreeze. But I’ve always put a thin hair thin smear on engine case and on stator cover then allow to set. Once set after 30 min then install. I’ve never had a case or clutch cover leak in 20 years. But the trick is with bare hand light smear. And your good.
@TheMotorcycleBoss Жыл бұрын
Yes. Regarding using your hands, I agree. It's simple but so many people smother the mating surfaces in RTV. Black is preferred but Permatex blue which is what I used is great for oil as well. I have a small leak around my alternator on my 1985 Nighthawk 650. Because my bike is an old bike it would cost a bunch to have it done. I don't work on stuff much on my own. Is a small leak something to be concerned about? I guess I could try this repair myself if I had to. You do give real good instructions.
@TheMotorcycleBoss4 жыл бұрын
If you can get ahold of the factory gasket that would be the best option. But if you can't get ahold of it because of its age, buying a product called "The Right Stuff" would be a completely perfect replacement for an OEM gasket. A small leak is not a major concern but if any of that oil happens to get on your rear tire in a turn, you could be in trouble. Japanese bikes are pretty good about being leak-free and it's best to keep them that way. Seeing that your cover is just a simple circle, it should be a easy job for you to do yourself I would imagine. Especially if you could get ahold of a factory service manual for your bike. Just remember that the most important part of fixing a leak is preparing the surface that your gasket will rest against. Take the extra time to do the job as flawlessly as possible and you should minimize the possibility of it leaking again. It's a pretty easy and straight-forward job. Worst-case scenario is it still leaks. Just don't tighten the bolts too tight and don't apply too much silicone sealant. I think it's something you can manage.

Really good video thanks! I’m about to fit my first gasket on my quad, I’ve cleaned both surfaces and removed all old gasket. No problem and thanks! If there are some rough spots, you can lightly go over those areas with 600-2000 grit sandpaper. Not a motorcycle but I have a can am ds 650, I had to change the gasket on the stator cover. The guy I got it from did the same thing you said your buddy did. He also said you have to add oil inside there as well. I'm not sure if that's true, and my valve cover gasket blew open on the top end idk why. I had to fix that to, I just need a little information on what I'm supposed to do.
@TheMotorcycleBoss4 жыл бұрын
Hey! Thanks for messaging. I hope all is well during these troubling times. Im not too familiar with atv's but it's basically a motorcycle with 4 wheels right?! When you open the stator cover, if no oil leaks out, no oil is needed to go back in assuming your oil level is where it should be. As far as the valve cover tho, what I'm wondering is that you might have a clogged PCV valve. If this is the case, (assuming your can-am has one; not all vehicles do so you will want to check your service manual) the blowby in your engine will build up pressure and start trying to release that pressure somehow. This could cause oil seals to blow, gaskets to go, etc. Normally this pressure is released by allowing it to go into the air intake through the PCV valve and gets recirculated. Im not saying that this is your problem tho. Just that it maybe a possibility. Other option is it's just time to replace those gaskets and you have no underlying issues. I hope this helps. I am looking forward to hearing your findings. Good luck with your project and ride safe.

But I will definitely check into all that, and oil leaked out when taking it off but the guy who had it before me put oil in it. So I'm not to sure, I'm searching online for a manual. I did find information on changing the oil on a 2003 can am ds 650, and it says to fill the oil tank. After doing so with the key on hit the starter button with the ignition switch in the off position to prime it until the light goes off. Same for the antifreeze. Hello. Can I remove completely the original gasket using only the silicone gasket? if not why? kind regards.
@TheMotorcycleBoss4 жыл бұрын
If you use a high temp oil resistant gasket maker, you CAN seal it up without a factory gasket present. However, you want to avoid it because when you screw down the cover, there will be "squeeze-out" not only on the outside of the case, but on the inside as well. The squuze-out can break off inside the case and clog up your oil pickup. It takes a lot to get to the point where you have engine issues as a result of it but you don't know how many times it has been done before the bike got to you. So it is always better to use a factory gasket alone than to use an all silicone gasket maker. But creating your own gasket can be done safely as long as you understand how little silicone you need to create a seal and have very little to no squeeze-out. Or you can try buying a sheet of gasket material which you can buy at autozone or oreily auto parts and then you can make your own gaskets of any shape and size without the fear of the development of internal particulates. You can also buy them here: amzn.to/2EjUmXp. Make sure the thickness and overall size fits your application. Sorry for all the text. I hope this helps. Good luck with your projects! Cheers!

The way you explained your issue is kind of vague but aside from either a cracked case or stator cover or a stator cover gasket replacement, sounds like possibly a pcv valve issue if your bike has one. Yet again, im still not entirely sure as to the issue you are describing so that would be my best guesses with what i think you are saying.

Great video, looks like an easy task that can be done in one's own garage! Would you recommend someone changing it themselves or should I take it to the dealership instead? It has a small pinhole on the face of the cover that slowly leaks so I'm too scared to ride it a few miles to the dealer. After 8 months of riding, I finally dropped my baby (2017 Ninja 650) the other morning on a stupid mistake. It had just stopped raining an hour or 2 before and I wanted to ride my bike to work. The roads were still slightly wet and as I was slowing down for a sharp 90 degree corner I ended up tapping my rear brake a bit to hard and the rear tire came out from under me because of the slick road. I was only doing about 15mph or so when it happened but it still landed on the left side and did a 180 slide in the road. Main Fairing is all scratched up, shift lever bent at a weird angle (rod still good and shifts fine, just the foot lever bent), clutch lever bent and end snapped off, and my main problem is that the stator cover took a hit. It got scratched up and now has a small, slow leak out the side where it's been dented. I ordered a new cover and gasket and shift lever, hoping I can just replace myself because I know how expensive dealership service departments are. It really sucks too because recently my ABS started to come on after a minute of riding and I was hoping to have them look at it and try for a warranty repair on the sensor, but now that I dropped it, its going to be a hard case to sell to them since they lose money on warranty work and look for every way not to do it.

YNRChewmiester dang man that sucks. You are right tho. Service depts charge a lot. Doing it yourself will save you a lot of money as well as getting to know your bike better. I would definitely get everything fixed then bring it in for the warranty repair ASAP. I hope this helps you. Thanks a lot for being a viewer and reaching out. You're awesome

Hey boss I just acquired an 04 gsxr 600 for $100. it had been stored outdoors for a couple of years and owner just didn't want to deal with the hassle of trying to sell it, plus he said it wouldn't shift out of 1st gear and trying to sell a bike someone cant actually test ride is a hassle in itself. Removing the cover where the clutch cable comes in I found a broken return spring the cam actuator connects to and ordered a new spring. I really cant go wrong with this investment as worst case scenario the motor and trans are junk and can always part it out, but my question is more recommendations on should I just go ahead and replace the clutch plates while I have it torn down or just replace the spring and see what it does?

Jeremy Kirkbride thats a great question and you got a good deal. fairly certain you found the shifting problem with that broken spring. you dont want to spend any money you dont have to. If you get ahold of a service manual for that bike, there will be specs on the steel plate and friction plate thickness' and serviceable limits. if they are still within spec and the basket and hub look fine as well as the bearings, you can scrub the steel plates and friction plates with a scotchbrite pad to undo any glazing it may have and soak the friction plates in oil for 3 hours-overnight - then reinstall. i hope this helps. good luck bro. thanks for asking. it means a lot to me that you would come to me for advice.

@@techten1012 Hey! Gasket sealer is the "correct" product for this. However, given my past experiences, I have learned that Permatex has done wonderfully well for me when it comes to gasket makers/sealers. Gasket makers are designed specifically to create gaskets where no gasket is present. Gasket sealants can be used as a dressing to help hold the gasket in place during assembly as well as being considered a last line of defence against leaks. I only used the gasket maker in this instance because I know Permatex seals well regardless of which one I use. It was also all I had on hand at the time. But you are correct. A gasket sealant is the correct thing to use in this application. But you can get away with gasket maker as long as you know not to put too much because of it's thicker formulation.

Alvin Law this is a very common question. You do not have to drain your oil or add any afterwards. If you ever remove your stator cover, be sure to have the bike straight up. Hey Boss, How did you know where to put that Silicone? You said the "metal mating surface", is that not the whole edge? I have a 650r Kawai, I swapped out my Gasket this weekend, but it still leaks, I am hoping its because i missed a tourque setting on the bolts, but I think it might also be from the Stator Cable, as i never added Silicone to that rubber seal either. Would I be ok to take it off, add the silicone and then reuse the now crushed Gasket, or should i start a fresh? What silicone do i need? Thanks :-)
@TheMotorcycleBoss7 жыл бұрын
You are correct that the mating surface is the whole side. However, there are 2 halves that come together to make the circular opening that the stator cover bolts to. Hard to explain. The engine consists of two halves that come together then cobers bolt onto the sides like the stator cover. When the 2 engine cases come together before the cover goes on, there is a slight difference in height between the 2 engine halves that can allow leakage. You want to apply silicone to those locations. You can sometimes use the same pre-crushed gasket as long as it is not damaged in any way. You could also use a gasket maker as well wither the factory gasket but be certain not to use too much or else it can squeeze into the engine when you torque the bolts down. Obviously the best solution is to get a new gasket but not everyone has access to that. I hope this helps in some way. Good luck with your project. Keep me updated.

Been testing the leaking I still have, and it all seems to come from where the Stator cable comes through the covers, So i am going to get a new Gasket and re-do, but this time apply the Silicone Gasket Maker to that area of the join. Will let you know. Cheers Bro!

@TheMotorcycleBossАй бұрын
You first need to identify the leak. Good chance if your stator wires have oil, it's coming from the stator cover. It's a common leak. But if you aren't sure where the leak is coming from, an old school trick is to clean the area thoroughly and let it dry. Then dust the area lightly with baby powder. After a little while, you should be able to identify where the leak is by it showing you where the wet spots are coming from. If that's the case, order a new gasket for your cover from the dealership or get one from ebay or partzilla.com. Then, just follow the steps in this video. Cleaning the gasket surfaces are paramount. If you don't clean them well enough, you will get a leak again. I hope this helps! Congrats on the new bike. Ride safe!

@TheMotorcycleBoss6 жыл бұрын
benito juarez oseguera not a problem bro. Welcome to my channel. It is a common misconception that oil is not supposed to be where the stator resides. However; this is only a myth. Aside from the starter clutch and gears that live behind the stator cover, the stator does develop some heat in itself when being used to generate electricity. This heat must be managed somehow and a common way to do this is to use the engine oil to cool down the coils as well as lubricate all the gears and such that reside in the same area. This is a common setup. The gasket i was replacing was because there was an external leak and nothing more. I hope this answers your question. Thanks for taking the time to reach out to me. Be careful out there.

All about the the sticks: creating a good seal is all about the surface prep. Did you prepare the gasket surface properly? Did you sand it lightly to ensure no contaminants on the sealing surface? Etc. I would replace the gasket, (im assuming you re-used the old gasket) and prep your mating surfaces extremely well. Also, check for crack in the metal.

The Motorcycle Boss hey man thanks for the reply, it leaked from the bottom the first time I changed the stator took it off scrapped and scrubbed then just used pure silicon no gasket and now it’s not leaking from the previous spot but now it’s coming directly through the screw hole ( had never leaked before ) I gotta take it back off and see
@TheMotorcycleBoss6 жыл бұрын
All about the the sticks: my recommendation is to order a factory gasket. They seem to work better than the liquid gasket maker material. If that isnt an option for you, then get this gasket maker called "the right stuff" it's perfect for your situation. Just be sure you apply it in one thin continuous bead from the top of the mating surface all the way around. It you have a break in the bead, it may be a weak point and cause a leak. Hopefully your crankcase isn't cracked. Keep me posted bro.

Hello MCB... I’ve recently replaced my battery, stator and RR, but the system is overcharging (fluctuates a lot and goes as high as 16.9V!) I’ve done all the tests for stator and RR.... battery is brand new.... can’t figure out what’s wrong. A local mechanic told me there should be little to no oil in the case, but mine has a cupful.... is there a chance I need to replace a seal in the flywheel shaft? Is it the oil causing the problem?..... some folk say oil is okay others say it’s fine 😩) any suggestions or help would be much appreciated! Cheers

is the stator meant to be filled with oil?
@TheMotorcycleBoss Жыл бұрын
Yes. The oil helps to cool the stator during normal operation.
@FS-wb4fc3 жыл бұрын
Nice one :) So is it normal that stator or inside of stator case is covered with oil ?
@TheMotorcycleBoss3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes. The stator gets hot during use and oil is fed to it to cool it down. Oil in the stator area is perfectly normal. That is why there are gaskets and rubber grommets in that area from the factory. I hope this answers your question. Please consider subscribing if you haven't already. Ride safe! Cheers!

Can u tell me why my atv stator keeps burning out I changed it about 4x
@TheMotorcycleBoss Жыл бұрын
Check your rectifier/regulator.

@@TheMotorcycleBoss I changed the rectifier twice
@TheMotorcycleBoss Жыл бұрын
@@rogersmainerogers5752 did you buy aftermarket or OEM. Rectifier/regulators are parts you really want OEM. Aftermarket ones are very often trash. I can barely ever get them to work right. However; regardless of which you get, you need to make sure you grab your service manual and a multimeter and physically test both the stator and the rec/reg.

@themotorcycleboss does this apply the same for suzuki gsxr 600??
@TheMotorcycleBoss7 жыл бұрын
Johnny Sarwary depending on the gasket material supplied from the manufacturer. mostly, yes. the biggest part with gasket surfaces is proper prepping of the surface. if you take the time to do that, you will be much less likely to have to fix it again. good luck.

I've got a Sazuki GSF 600 X. In the morning I'm finding it difficult to start and when it does the engine just doesn't sound right. The bike was manufactered in 1999. I was thinking that I've got the same problem as you're explaining in the video, but I'm not sure what kind of stator I would need for my motorbike? Thanks.
@TheMotorcycleBoss7 жыл бұрын
Olivia Pinto without more information, it is hard to pinpoint your issue. it could be a range of different things. anywhere from carbs to spark plugs. if you did proper diagnosis of your charging system, and found it to be the stator, you would just go to a suzuki dealer and order a new stator. or go to bikebandit.com. it it is only an issue with it starting tho, when the battery is fully charged, your issue is isolated more to carbs, plugs, bad ground, starter, and the like. but if it runs rough, isnt always a stator. do your due diligence on your troubleshooting techniques and you will quickly reward yourself. good luck.

where can i find kawasaki bond 92104-0004? or what is the best substitute
@TheMotorcycleBoss8 жыл бұрын
Kris if you are using it to do what i did, a gasket sealant will work fine. not a gasket maker. if you are in need of something oem, you would need to call a local ridenow powersports. I doubt cycle gear would have it but it is worth a try

TheMotorcycleBoss thank you for the respons. Is a black locktite sealant okay? Great vid by the way
@TheMotorcycleBoss8 жыл бұрын
Kris thanks for the compliment. gasket info is hard to find. but i believe it is because there are so many that are used for different applications. for instance, your loctite black sealant uses the word "sealant instead of the words "gasket maker" or "liquid gasket". to me, (and i'm not saying this is correct but it works for me) a "sealant" is used like how i used it in this video; very little on critical spots. a "gasket maker" is not supposed to bu used in conjunction with a gasket at all. also look at what your rtv is rated for compared to your application. for example: loctite black is oil resistant and water resistant but not gasoline resistant. so sealing a gas tank wouldn't work. but a mating surface that holds oil or water would be fine. also look at temperature ratings. your rtv can withstand temps up to 450°F so that is suitable for automotive applications. i hope this answers your question. if you are still uncertain, although this is a different product, take a look at this video. wish you the best. kzbin.info/www/bejne/npDcanmKnsiBpK8

TheMotorcycleBoss i'm driving a kawasaki z750 and it is for the clutch cover. I have to seal at 2 places like in your vid. So i think it is best to use loctite. Thx for the help! Grtz

What do you mean oil level lower than the cover?
@TheMotorcycleBoss4 жыл бұрын
Make sure that you aren't doing this job to a bike on the kickstand otherwise with some bikes you might have your oil level creeping into the cover. I highly doubt it will leak a lot through the cover but just to be safe, when putting it on a center stand, the oil level will be lower on the left side than if it were on a kickstand

where do you find the the specs for the the torque
@TheMotorcycleBoss6 жыл бұрын
james hewitt every motorcycle comes with at least 2 manuals; the owners manual and the service manual. An owners manual covers basics and service manual covers all torque specs, replacement parts, etc. A TON of information. A must have for every DIY guy for every vehicle you have.
