I’ve spoke to some of these women when I was there and they explained that there is not much opportunity in Kenya for women that don’t have a degree. So they don’t FEEL like they have a choice

I visit this site to understand how others choose to view and/or judge white men who travel to Africa. (BTW, I am a 62 year-old American, and I will be arriving in Nairobi in three weeks.) From a very young age, I discovered that black people will either (1) be willing to be my friend, (2) not really care about who I am or what I do, or (3) harbor some resentment based on their own feelings. Perfect example. When I was about 9 years old and I arrived at a birthday party. Kid in the back yells out, "Why is a white boy here?" (I was obviously the only white-boy.) In an instant, the birthday boy replied, "He is here because he is my friend." Nothing else was said about it for the rest of the party. In short, I had a friend, someone in the back did not like me because I was white, and most of the kids did not really care either way --- they just wanted their slice of cake. lol In 50 years, this dynamic has remained pretty much the same. The only difference in America is that race resentment is even more pronounced when my friendship for another extends to a woman of color. I appreciate my time in Kenya because the majority of people I meet show very little resentment, and are willing to be my friend. And for the few people who give me that "stare of disapproval," I do not mind. I understand the historical reasons for their discontent. They are entitled to their own perspective. In any event, I have been invited to the party, and I will enjoy the slices of cake that I share with my friends and my family in Kenya.

I'll honest with you number 3 " harbor some resentment " we only have towards people of your group because how weve been treated individually or as a group black people are 1 of the most excepting people and if youve really been around us you will know that. If you even get a chance to visit Colombia South America you will encounter a culture with hardly any racism and interracial relationships are very normal. I dated a girl there who was Afro Colombian and she thought nothing about her skin color. Race is a bigger deal in the United States than in most countries.

It's funny am watching this and I was in Kenya 4yrs ago went to Mombasa and a santa claus who looked every bit of 70yrs old was with a 18yr old girl. I was so shocked and disgusted and am from Kenya. I was told that some of it has to do with poverty and the girls in Mombasa are with these grandpa's so they can help their families especially if they are dirty poor they will date these old heads. Crazy but lack of education is also to blame some of these girls never went to school.

I think the women use that as a Ticket to a better life , and they see it as a status upgrade, but it’s definitely rampant in Kenya. Especially with the older men. It’s a hustle for some & for some it’s real love .
