Finally a Greek teaching the pronunciation of Greek letters. Shocking how the USA and UK websites have got it wrong and still pretend to know the actual pronunciation. So glad I chanced upon this video. Going to take me a whole lot of retraining.

Out of Greece they use the "Erasmus pronunciation" for Ancient Greek, which is not used in Greece, and a big discussion between Professors Ancient Greek in various countries :-) Anyway, about the modern Greek there is no discussion, it is what you hear in the video. @OmiloHellas
@OmiloHellas 3 жыл бұрын
Kalisprea Jona, we wish you good luck with the Greek Alphabet. For sure your stay in Greece will be so much nicer when you can read Greek. About your questions, the I, H and Y have exactly the same pronunciation, so no difference, but the spelling is different. So depending where the letter is in the word, or in which other combination of letters it is used, you will need one of the three...But do not worry about it for the time being..just remember they have the same pronunciation. (like in English "eat" and "meet"...same pronunciation, different spelling...)

@@OmiloHellas I am mainly interested in the Greek language as it relates to the Greek New Testament but the correct pronunciation is critical for the kids. I live in a town called Ypsilanti. Many cities and towns are named after Indian (native American) tribes, chiefs, etc. ( and so on). A lot of the rivers and lands are the names given by the Indians. I thought Ypsilanti was an Indian name. Boy was I wrong. There is an American movie called my Greek wedding. Have you seen it? It is really funny.

@@rlund3 no problem to ask, but this is not something in our field, or our interest,. SO I am sorry to tell you that we will not. About your previous comment, yes of course we know the movie, which most Greeks have seen. @eumixx
@eumixx 3 жыл бұрын
This sound is represented by the diphthong "ΟΥ - ου" i.e. the combination of the letters Omikron and Ypsilon. For this sound, like in "foot" and "put," it's always "ου" in Greek. As soon as you learn to read, you will be able to pronounce everything correctly. Careful: Ypsilon upper case looks like "Y" and lower case looks like "u." For example: ΛΥΚΟΣ - λύκος (wolf) .
