The whole idea behind the number out of 10 is to determine how much the game is worth buying as well as its own personal benchmarks that the individual sets for themselves in order to purchase the game. If the score is high enough to them, then they will purchase the game usually at full price and determine the worth of the game themselves by a value/10.

Yeah it is very, very good. BUT it should be noted that it is first and foremost a puzzle game, you spent more time thinking than you do fighting or looting. So if you're into dungeon crawlers but not so much into puzzles, you might want to check out some more thorough reviews of the game. I also think that a 10/10 is fully justfied, the game is great.
@Lomaxxx53

A Dungeon Crawler always has it's puzzles. It's both stuff.
@EliasFrost123
@EliasFrost123 9 жыл бұрын
yeah, I know. But there were several instances on the Steam forums where people felt confused over the focus of the game. I thought it was worth pointing out in case someone were confused as to whether it's a puzzle game or a looter, dungeon crawler isn't really corelated with puzzles if you ask someone post-2000.
@SirusDiarota
@SirusDiarota 9 жыл бұрын
EliasFrostMusic TL:DR Only reason people get confused is when you use the wrong genre. Grimrock is a call back to the older style titles such as Eye of the Beholder or Dungeon Master, where it's focusing on exploration and paying attention to the surroundings. As well as managing equipment loads, load outs and even food and water supplies. Combat may seem "simple", but you have to be mindful of the party's layout, what the threat is, where they are etc. You can't just mash left mouse and a few cool downs. Some people may call hack and slash or loot based games such as the Diablo series and Dungeon Siege as crawlers too. And they'd technically be wrong for the reasons I just said. Diablo isn't focusing on exploration, most of the time you're told where to do, and what you need to do. Sure, there's inventory management, but I can't remember if you suffered penalties to carrying too much weight outside of "I cannot pick this up", and more focus is on cool down skills and equipment in combat rather than the dance like strafing you'll see most players of the actual dungeon crawlers doing. Add to the mix that these titles are probably far easier to pick up quickly, and the popularity of recent titles such as Path Of Exile and Torchlight, and I can certainly see where the supposed "confusion" comes from. From your comment, you're more of a fan of the second "definition", and that's fine. Grimrock is probably not going to sit well with you. And given that you think "post 2000" means that a genre just completely changes, I guess you probably haven't heard much about the games or the style I mentioned. Which is also fair enough, given that aside from Grimrock, most of the games in this style are either fairly old, or have a really small following. The Might and Magic series and Wizardry are probably more well known, but this style did "die off" for a while. That or it moved into another direction with the Forgotten Realms setting titles such as Neverwinter, Bauder's Gate and Icewind Dale, or Planescape : Torment. The most recent titles like these would probably be Divinity ; Original Sin and not much else. But to say that there's confusion over the two (Ok, three >_>) styles?
@EliasFrost123
@EliasFrost123 9 жыл бұрын
SirusDiarota Thanks for the breakdown but I don't think you read my comment thoroughly I never applied any of my own preference to the post other than singing the game's praises, I've played Grimrock 2 and the first one and I've playerd lots of old dungeon crawlers in my time so yeah I know what I'm talking about. And I I said that there are people who have different views on what Dungeon Crawler means, one thinks it's "golden age of RPG"-style crawler with like dungeon master etc. and another think it's about looting and killing, ala Diablo. Give or take, from time to time confusion happens and some people I've talked to and read about have confused this with a looter. What I wanted to say in my original comment is that Grimrock is not a standard, statsdriven monster killer game, it's a thinker's game and to its core a puzzle game. I didn't say that the genre changed after 2000, I sayed that if you asked someone post-2000 (that is, someone born after 2000- ca 12-14) you'll probably don't get a lot of references to Dungeon Master but Action RPGs like Diablo, PoE or various Rogue-likes that've sprung up in recent years. I'm not sure where the "genre-changing" perspective came into the picture because that's far from what I said. Dungeon crawl simply means navigating a labyrinthian space, killing monsters, search for treasure and solve puzzles, though expectations can vary and confusion happens. Rogue is a dungeon crawler and Diablo (and hence modern action RPGs) have roots in Rogue so it's not that much of an alien concept that people get confused or have different expectations. I just didn't think Jared conveyed that enough in the review so I hashed it out here. EDIT: Damn I sound really snarky in this one, sorry I'm really tired. :/
@SirusDiarota

@timlarsson 9 жыл бұрын
I haven't tried this second game yet, but there's not much story in the first game, and I assume there's nothing much connecting the first and second game at all. Besides: Just being in one huge dungeon in the first game vs. being outdoors and in several dungeons in the second game.. that's a HUGE plus! But then again, I guess the first game is a bit cheaper (especially if you manage to snatch it in a sale), so you could try it out... (Yay, sverige)

Sed1er It's not that I just want something "New", it's more a question of: "Hmm, I'd really like to try this game out.. But I can't afford both right now..." It seems to me that the second game is pretty much the first one, but improved upon, I might as well start there, you know?

Looks a lot like some PC dungeon crawlers from the 90's, like Eye of the Beholder and Might and Magic (and their Amiga predecessor, Dungeon Master.) Totally my kind of thing. One outstanding question: Is this like Mass Effect and I have to play LoGR1 first for the full monte, or can I jump right in with 2?
@MayorofGaming

I couldn't agree more! I started my lets play of it the almost immediately after I finished it. It's a contender for game of 2014 in my books. Well polished, flowing world, amazing puzzles, and a story that manages to be intriguing and not shoved in your face the whole time. I actually have problem finding a single fault in this game if you are into dungeon crawls. Also, it's on GoG if you don't like to use Steam. Get it, it's amazing, and hopefully we will see a return of Grimrock again in the future.

Glad to see this is good. LoG 1 was absolutely fantastic. Though I gotta say I'm a bit disappointed with the changing of the magic system. That was something I really liked about the first one. The spells were powerful, but casting them took time. The more you learned one the faster you could cast it because as a player you were more used to it, and rushing with your magic could very well result in a fizzle because in your haste you accidentally pressed the wrong button.

As someone who doesn't play a whole lot of PC games, this looks like Etrian Odyssey, which I absolutely loved. May actually pick this up.

Let me preface this by saying I've never played a dungeon crawler game like this. This game is weirdly addicting. Pretty simplistic with it's character level ups/stats, but makes up for that with a lot of complex puzzles. The grid based retro dungeon crawler style is done very well, and doesn't restrict you as much as you'd think. The dungeons are well done with lots of secrets and puzzles to figure out, and hidden loot in the overworld is a plus. I've played maybe 3 hours and only gotten through the first two dungeons (the introductory one and one other one I named the 'leprechaun's pit.). All in all fantastic so far, but be prepared to put a lot of hours in to complete the game (I think it said there were 30 dungeons + overworld exploration)!

Hey Jared, are you planning a one minuet review of SANIC BOOM!?!?!?!? I'm actually legitimately curious as to whether the game is even passable or not. I mean, from a technical and writing standpoint, the game suffers ALOT of problems due to being rushed out for the holidays, and some of the gameplay even looks like it's just simple, repetitive combat. However, I did try the 3ds demo, and I think that if the game actually fleshed out it's ideas of using different characters and their abilities for platforming, exploration, and combat, that it could be good. Probably just me though. Also binding of Isaac rebirth happened, and I think it looks like the perfect game you can just play for hours on end. Theenks for the great review once again, will definitely be picking this up for x-mas!
