My beloved Bertie passed away two weeks ago, a month before his 18th birthday. I am devastated; he was the most wonderful, loving, gorgeous, funny and gentle companion you could ever ask for. His beautiful twin brother Percy is still very sick, and his grieving is heartbreaking. He hasn't meowed since Bertie died and was, until then, the loudest, most vocal cat I've ever known. All the cats got sick from an E.Coli outbreak in their urine. Because of this, they shed the feline herpes virus. It's been a terrible time, and the vet bills have been utterly crippling. My great aunt billy converted her hen house when she got old into a cat house. She turned each hen box into a cat bed. She lived in the country and there were lots of feral cats around. Only two or three became house cats but all the others had a safe dry place to sleep. In winter she kept it warm with a small potbelly stove. Many would come on her porch but few would come inside.

This is the most beautiful amazing catio I’ve ever seen! I live in the country on 22 acres and it seems cats know to come here to be saved and well cared for. I had 7 but, several month ago a kitten showed up bringing the grand total to 8! I love them all dearly and want to build them something like this! The lights you’ve chosen are perfect, the edible plants, the personalized napping areas, the use of real trees to climb …… it’s just all so beautiful!

I once visited the ruined remains of Babylon and its Hanging Gardens in Iraq. It's hard to picture even with a very rich imagination that that place of rather unassuming size and potential would've been all that magnificent in its heyday. Oh dear... don't ever live outside of a city or the suburbs. You wouldn't be able to cope with the real environment. If we don't let our cats free roam, we are run over by mice here! Our entire neighborhood found out the difference with a few cats and without. My neighbor had a mouse destroying things in her shed. She borrowed one of our cats and the problem was solved. The part of our village, that didn't have enough cats, was overtaken by wild rabbits. Hundreds of them. Where our cats would hunt and eat them in our part of the village, when the rabbits were little. Real life is for the tough. Cats are there to CONTROL animal populations. Australia thought they had too many cats. The government employed people to hunt and kill them. Soon after they lost entire harvest to MILLIONS of mice living near farms. You cannot do farming without cats around! Australia ought to have spayed/neutered some of the cat population and place them back. The economical damage has been huge. Mice urinating and pooping in many places of food storage, so all is contaminated and lost. Hay for the cattle lost in astronomical figures.

@gardenjoy5223 Sweetheart, I live outside in the country. I see countless cats get run over every single day because of neglectful “outdoor cat” owners who think they know better. And Australia still has laws that don’t allow cats out after sundown. Which is exactly how it should be in the US as well. I’m tired of people saying cats are only for pest control. There are other ways to control mice populations that don’t involve using cats as some pick me up whack job control. I’ve been researching and volunteering with cats, both feral and domestic, for over 5 years. And Australia is incomparable to the US in terms of environmental damage that cats have done. Don’t assume that I can’t handle or cope with the real environment because you think I’m some dumb city slicker. I know exactly what I’m talking about, thank you.

Great for people, but I think he has too many lights. I've seen videos filmed in night vision mode to see what their cats are up to at night & it seems that they are more active & like it better than the daytime also sleeping less, they are nocturnal after all... I think this joint is beautifully perfect! He can always put in a desk with a poll set out with some pens in order to get the cat's opinions😂❤!!!

The problem I had with it with one of my current cats, is the couple seconds wait for it to scan and open. He often would get chased by the neighbours cat and needs to be able to barrel in straight away lest he gets bit in the butt and a full scrap happens.

The UAE has a lot of street cats that need homes too. There are people that take care of a lot of them. They’ll give them vet care m, food, water, shelter, and try to find them homes. Unfortunately some of them end up blind because of some sort infection. My sister has 5 from there. There’s 3 eyes between the 5 cats. But the blind cats get around great! They run all around the house and climb the cat trees. They are amazing! These cats are flown all over the world to their new homes by volunteers that agree to transport them. The new owner typically pays for the cat’s ticket, shots, carrier, and license. Anyone flying out of Abu Dhabi or Dubia can volunteer. They just have to agree to meet the new owner somewhere to deliver the cat.

I've shared with with my friend as he has his own catio but he's worried it looks too much like a bare bones prison. He's put catfriendly flowers in planters but he was wondering what to do to make it more attractive for both him, any visitors (like me) and of course the most important people; the cats. I had a 15x2m catio similar to this one, but far larger and more wild (was basically a piece of garden turned into catio). Took me 3 months to build. And he loved running from one side to the other but he quickly realized there's not much else to do inside. So I decided to fence half of my garden just for my cat, which is some 20x30m with 5 tall trees and lots of bushes where he often catches a mice or some other rodent. He is really content ever since and it's easier to do than build a catio. You just use normal fence and add cat proof extension on top or rollers. They can't jump over it. Nice work though. It's a piece of art.

Looks great Philip, though I'm sure the cats don't quite understand your obsession with aesthetics 😺.. I wish I could add the fake foliage and all those lights to my catio, but here in tropical Australia everything becomes home to tiny messy spiders and their webs very quickly. We also have Asian Gecko infestations (attracted by the moths that are attracted by the light) which while provide hunting opportunities to the cats, are also messy. Obviously I can't use pesticides or poison traps.
