Dan, you're the man! I actually used to have the Stingray 4. Been playing since 13 and now 43. Finally decided to get a 5-string Sterling Stingray, it sounds amazing! Slapping IS harder with strings closer together, but since I record my own guitar and bass parts for my music, it's giving me a lot of low end, which I LOVE. Thank you these tips help!!

Awesome tutorial! I slap through the string which means that I can actually mute the low strings with my right forearm by the bridge because my arm is at the optimal angle. I’ve done this for a while now but I don’t really know of any other bassists who do this. Have you ever heard of this muting technique?

Do you think it's ok just to use palm muting on a 5 when slapping? That's what I do exclusively for the lower strings. When actually slapping the lower strings I mute the higher strings with my left hand which all feels more natural.

Is your bass in the same position and height as when you play sitting? If not, adjust the strap so that it is. That should help!

Great lesson Dan! Is it harder to slap on some basses than it is on other basses for any particular reasons or maybe the setup? My slapping on an Ibanez GSR200 is not sounding like slapping. It's better on the E and A strings than the D and G strings. The strings seem too tight for slapping, although setup and tuned properly.
@OnlineBassCourses
@OnlineBassCourses 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! String spacing plays a big role as does the string gauge and type. Victor Wooten and Mark King use 40 on the G string. Stainless steel are good for getting that snap and high end tone good for slap.
@donh5794
@donh5794 4 жыл бұрын
@@OnlineBassCourses That's very good to know. I did not think about string spacing since I didn't know how much control we have on it. Can you tell more about string spacing? Also is the string height action a factor. Type of strings as you indicated, certainly is good to know.
@OnlineBassCourses
@OnlineBassCourses 4 жыл бұрын
@@donh5794 action is definitely a factor. String spacing is measured at the bridge and is just the distance between strings measured in mm. There are a few standards and it’s down to hand size and personal preference. Go to a shop and try a few different sizings and you’ll see...

Easy; slap and pop a 4 string bass! Sorry, bad answer I know but I tend not to slap on a 6. Use a fret wrap by the nut or use your fretting hand for muting (which will be quite tough but possible on a 6).

so if im using my thumb to slap the 3rd string, my left index is muting the 4th string and my right palm is muting the 5th string ?
@OnlineBassCourses
@OnlineBassCourses 3 жыл бұрын
That's certainly one way to do it. As long as you can find any way that doesn't feel *too* awkward then go for it. It kind of depends what both hands are doing at that moment (and what notes you’re fretting).
@mmbcproductions3340
@mmbcproductions3340 3 жыл бұрын
@@OnlineBassCourses ok I see. Can you suggest other ways to do it?
@OnlineBassCourses
@OnlineBassCourses 3 жыл бұрын
@@mmbcproductions3340 Most of what I'd suggest is already in the video. Since the thumb/pop hand is quite busy and often quite far from the strings (bouncing around as it does during slap technique) I tend to use the left hand to mute - the first finger can take care of a lot of problems. Gruv Gear fret wraps are also great!
