Hello sir. I believe the first case is the correct solution. After solving so many similar examples from different sources it's proven that the solution is 16 And finally after using like 5 different scientific calculators and inserting the question just the way u write it on the board the answer is still 16.

Thanks for the research and the point you just brought out here sir. I did a thorough research on this before dropping this challenge. I want to still believe that 1 is the correct solution to this simplification, but my approach is subject to correction/debate because of human imperfection sir. A number outside of a bracket is implied multiplication. The answer is 16, case1 not case 2. The use of square brackets in case 2 is the wrong use of square brackets.

The convention is from left to right, so 8/2x4 = 4x4, =16

You are wrong. By introducing the square brackets, you have certainly changed the original question

The point is: If you replace the obelus with a slash, the denominator would be everything right of the slash: 8 / 2(2+2). In this scenario, the numerator is 8, the denominator is 2 times 4, which is 8. This is (deliberately) a poorly written equation. It is on a standardized test and these are designed to test your knowledge and thought processes. I suspect both 16 and 1 are possible answers, with different weights in the scoring algorithm.

You are changing the question by introducing a SQUARE bracket. So there are 2 Questions and the answers are 16 and 1.

Dude you’re wrong on this one. When you add the additional brackets, you telling people what you want to perform first without the additional brackets you saw from left to right. 8 / 2 (2+2) = 16 8 / {2(2+)} = 1

solution: never use an obelus to represent division. its extremely vague and can lead to disagreement amongst different people looking at problems like this.

The answer is 16 . But if there is a bracket that include 2 the answer will be 1

I would instinctively do case 2 without thinking but you could argue case 1 going left to right take precedence after the parentheses.

If no sign is mentioned after or before any brackets that implies that very number is multiplied i.e 'of' operation has been there so 1would be the correct one
