The thing about the Down With The Sickness breakdown is that I get what they were going for, but it just didn’t work. As a child abuse victim myself, I understand that pain. I really do. The concept of depicting the issue from a direct emotional perspective through a metal breakdown could’ve been done really well. But David Draiman’s delivery just feels so off that it becomes the worst part of the song. I wish it wasn’t so goofy, there are some genuine emotions behind the tryhard-edginess.
@TooSkramz
@TooSkramz Жыл бұрын
These are my feelings almost to the letter. That said, growing up I only ever heard the radio version; I'm not sure how I would've reacted to the breakdown when I was still in that situation. With full hindsight it is a shame that it ended up so corny and lost any impact that it may have had, but child me probably would've latched onto it just for the validation of that trauma.
@thedumpsterfire4909
@thedumpsterfire4909 Жыл бұрын
Agreed. Part of what makes David Draiman's delivery feel so off was the fact that it was so scripted. Imo, the best instance of a mental breakdown being incorporated into a song was Korn's "Daddy" and it worked because it was a very real result of the lead singer reliving his childhood trauma in the recording studio.

I firmly believe that the domestic abuse breakdown is one of the absolute worst things I've ever heard in a song. No question. The worst part of this album is that the lead singer can actually sing. Bro's a professional classical singer and yet he decided to go this route. The only thing holding it together is the instrumentals because the lyrics are mostly ass with no real substance. The tirade in the middle of down with the sickness is actually disgusting. I dont mean it in a good way. It's so tone deaf and poorly handled that it comes across as fanfic about a kid rising up to abuse his mother who abused him. It's literal garbage and incredibly uncomfortable without any logical grounding or resolution. For some people, and I mean this: it's gonna cause them to relive their experiences with domestic abuse, coming out of nowhere and does actually nothing to uplift or resolve those emotions - just jarringly switching back the main track as if it never happened. If you're going to introduce fucked up and serious topics you need to handle them with care and resolve the emotions that come with them in a meaningful way.

English is my second language and my intro to disturbed was from shit like spiderman tribute videos on youtube when I was a kid lol. I never cared for the lyrics, even reading them now, cringe as they are, I still love this album just cause it's catchy and bouncy, synth effects and all. David's cadence is just fun to listen to and he's a strong vocalist as well. I don't get how some people outright shit on his vocal ability, it's outstanding really, he's able to hit some pretty high notes and growly vocals like he does are really hard to pull off. Now I do wholeheartedly agree that this band has been releasing the same music over and over and over for decades at this point and I have zero excitement for their future projects.

I do unironically really like this album. Yes, it is very much dated nu metal from 2000, the lyrics are this trying-to-be-menacing edgy that don't quite get there, the vocals are kinda iffy here and there, but goddamn, the production and instrumentals are what really do it for me. The heaviness of the guitars and drums, the synths I feel work really well, the presence of David's voice. This and their next album, Believe, to me are the only two Disturbed albums that are interesting, they dropped the nu metal sound entirely after The Sickness and have just stuck with a pretty bland, uninteresting alt metal sound up until their Sound of Silence cover. To which they then started incorporating ballads into their music. But yeah, pretty solid nu metal album to me, slightly edgier and darker than its contemporaries at the time, great production which really brings out the heaviness, although I won't excuse that "domestic abuse solo" lol.

I hope you check out their second album at some point, It's a huge step forward, even if It's still not perfect. Deify is a really good song IMO. They also drop all the "LOL I"M SUCH A CRAZY BASTARD" shit on that next album. Sons Of Plunder is fun too.

See that album was kind of where I stopped caring about Disturbed because I think without all their goofy gimmicks the band just doesn't have much to set them apart. The more they delved into making regular metal the less interesting they got for me.

Listening to this record without the nostalgia goggles, it's shocking just how much the passable to occasionally great instrumentals are held back by awful lyricism, middling at best vocal performance, and repetitive song structures. The funny part is that Draiman was considered a vocal talent at the time. 3/10, 4/10 if you include the gay sex solo

I remember when I was in my first band. The guitarist liked metal so as the drummer I just played what I was told. We played “Stricken” and “The Light” by disturbed. These songs were from when they left nu metal and became a traditional modern metal band. All I can say is, I did NOT know it was THAT bad on their debut.
