I'm similar but not because of attention span, I loved Tool back then but I never liked harsh vocals. For some reason as I've gotten older I like heavier and heavier metal. Now I'm 30 and I listen to death metal more than anything.

Ghost of Perdition is a force of nature, truly. It's also not the easiest song for someone unused to Opeth or death metal, so perhaps it was for the best that it took a while. Incidentally, Harlequin Forest (which I know you've reacted to) from the same album is a great introduction to Opeth and is usually my #1 recommendation to newcomers.

This is my favorite Opeth album from the death era (95-08). The songwriting is impeccable and Mikael started singing very well around this point. Between this, Harlequin and the Hounds, you’ve got the main songs covered. But I’d be interested in your response to the lead single from it, probably Opeth’s most “commercial” metal song called “The Grand Conjuration.” It’s heavy, creepy and repetitive in a good way; just make sure you do the full song and not the awfully truncated music video version

@@sonicallydisruptive It's amazing. The reason some Opeth fans refers to "The Grand Conjuration" as their most "commercial" song is that some parts cross the border to Dream Theater-land in a few places. If you decide to react to it, don't do the music video version, they cut minutes off the song to fit the format.

Not sure why but this is always the most requested song for reaction channels. I love the song but man, I don't get why people insist it be the first exposure to the band so often. The album is a great loosely told concept album. I think over all it's endured as my favorite of theirs as a whole. Sorry Still Life, I still love you though.

kinda how everyone wants "kingdom of heaven" to be someone's 1st Epica reaction, it's unreal lmao . their entire discography is golden why insist on ONE song??? I get lots of people want something visual for the channel in question to react to, but it's MUSIC, this guy totally gets it, you need not a live show to enjoy these songs. you learn the studio tracks THEN you watch live stuff
@paravarium
@paravarium 4 жыл бұрын
What would you suggest someone start their epica journey with? I'm having a tough time, i think having a catchy accessible song is usually a good start so maybe cry for the moon or never enough. God damn i love chasing the dragon and fools of damnation though. I think the problem is we're use to reaction channels that only give a band one or two shots a year. I saw them with symphony x on the paradise lost tour and have been a big fan since, but yeah people really want to push all the epics forward first when there's a lot of songs that capture the essence of music and it can get a little frustrating.

@@paravarium I'm totally not the expert there ...lol once I hear a song from a new band that I like , I almost always start with that bands 1st album and listen to the entire discography .. but if I HAD to choose , maybe the 1st song I heard from them....storm the sorrow , it's not too long or complex yet showcases what the band is, but then again not everyone has the same taste, the song that drew me in may not be the one to hook everyone

One thing I love about this song is that it wasn't easy to learn to play on guitar, and alternate tuning was used. I always love a challenge. There are a lot of metal bands whose tracks I learned by ear, but that's hard with Opeth. I needed the tabulature for this song. Strangely, I hated this album when they first released it. I was a huge fan of every album before it (from Orchid to Deliverance), but after a few months, and adjusting to Mikael's new direction, I began to understand how brilliant it was.

You know, the more I listen to this album - the more I understand that it resembles something in the sense of an old Ancient Greek tragedy. I even think that it has something about that Oedipus myth. Especially if you take a look about the whole story of the album, and especially the question why it happened. I feel like that man who was possessed, was just broken beforehand by his mother. That's why he seeks revenge, to free himself from her. Hence, dark forces, devil and other things. Like he was recklessly freed from his own power, that's why he calls upon dark forces to help him (or something, because obviously there is something dark about this). If you don't believe in what I've said, ask another question: if everything was good, could someone do something like that, that was described throughout the album? And why I mentioned Ancient Greek tragedies, because music itself shows the whole emotional landscape, from utmost brutality and gruesomeness up to the repentance (Atonement song). That's why it's a tragedy in all its forms. Even lyrics describe different states of mind, even words used describe lots of interesting details. I'm just interested in psychology and myths, that's why I see lots of similarities. Anyway, cheers!

What bugs me about these videos that people are watching and reacting to is that the author of the original video ALWAYS gets the lyrics wrong. Just why in the hell doesn't somebody consult the freaking record sleeve, where it's written out by the authors themselves? I have a hunch that not many of these guys making these videos actually own the physical records, so they're grabbing things from the internet, and a bunch of blatant errors sneak in. Regardless, fantastic song. The musicianship is incredible. I've seen them live twice, and yep, they're amazing.

You should listen to Pain of Salvation one of these days. They are also swedish, they also play prog metal, nothing like Opeth but if Opeth is one of my top favorites, PoS is number one for me. Perfection at all levels. Just listen to Remedy Lane album, for example. Or another masterpiece, Be. All albums are conceptual and speak of real life. Try it, you will be amazed.
