Just to let you know I watched your D710 review and clicked the link... excellent!

Man Your comment about the lanyard and boltsnap is so eye opening...I never thought of it even though it annoyed me so much having that thing dangling... Also, the carry box should indeed have a way to store the torch with either attached with preference towards the boltsnap of course. Now am a fan and subscriber :)

Nice review, i dive the same light in Sweden and at the 1700 lumen setting in 8 degree water i am getting around 1:15. No where near the 2 hours. The boost mode you can ignore tbh you hardly see it. I use it mostly on the 800 lumen setting and it is more then enough. All in all a nice light for the price but get a second battery is my recommendation

Clicked the link! I already have the D710, which I bought direct from Orcatorch for less than the UK price, complete with 2 batteries- just had to wait a couple of weeks for it to arrive. I am currently using it as my UK primary- however, I totally agree that it doesn't cut through as well as some of my buddies canister torches when it gets murky. On a dive in clear water though the difference is far less noticeable. But it is good enough that it will do the job until I can afford to upgrade - and when I do upgrade, it won't go to waste, as it'll be a great backup and holiday torch. I also agree with pretty much everything else you said. Coincidently, I've put an Xdeep small boltsnap on mine (big fan of Xdeep clips!). The one thing I'd disagree with is the button, I find it easy to use even with drygloves (I have kubi drygloves) or 5mm wetgloves. And the switch being slightly stiff never turns on accidentally. I also have the D550 as my current backup, but the tail switch on that is so easy to accidentally press (often the boltsnap touches it). So not such a fan of a tail switch - I now unscrew the head of the D550 half a turn when diving and when it's in my bag, to stop it from activating. I've never had this issue with the D710. The one function of the D550 I do like is it has a strobe mode which would be invaluable if I was ever left drifting on the surface at night.

Nice commentary. I agree with the bolt snap. I also use those XDeep bolt snaps and like them quite a bit, especially with gloves. I have bolt snaps on my lights and also keep a bracelet like loop of shock cord around my wrist I clip the light to when using it. No need to worry about losing it, but I can easily reclip it to a D ring and the shock cord stays in a benign spot around my wrist either with a wetsuit or drysuit. Been using an Orca Torch 570 in addition to others. A little bit big for my tastes as a daytime light for peering into nooks and crannies, I have a Kraken 600 lumen that is a but more compact without as much blinding backscatter for that purpose. But the laser on the 570 is entertaining for playing with the fish as they often chase it like a cat would. The additional lumens is handy for signaling in daytime, however, as I've had others say they couldn't see me in the poor viz but could see the sweeping of the light. I try to impress on students to always have a light, even in the day time, as it is handy for looking in and under dark areas, as well as signalling should there be an emergency where one gets left out into the night.

Great blog on the torch. Those red batteries (Ultra fire 4200mAh ?) are not as long lasting as other brands. My other brands are 2400 mAh and last longer - try figure that one out!! So there may be a gain here if you try other batteries too. Assuming my 2x Ultra fire batteries are not faulty?? Just something to consider when checking longevity of the torches. My 2 other makes, one is chinese with 'Feng Xing Hu Wai' 2400 mAh 18650, stamped on it. (Canary Yellow canister) The other is a Japanese made, NCR 18650B Li-ion MH12210. (Pale green canister) Have a great weekend buddies 🤝👍

Top tip: remove the foam from the box and you can get a D710 and 2x D520's with boltsnaps in. Great point on lanyard!!
@UKDiver Жыл бұрын
The only problem with that is the batteries need to be separately stored for flight. They can’t be in the torch and they need to be kept where they can’t touch metal and short out. Take the foam out and your back to having to store the batteries in another separate box in your bag therefore making this case no more useful than any other box. The reason I like this box is it keeps the torch and batteries in a flight compliant way.

This light is 1400lm as per test done by scubadiving. I know that the majority of the stuff is done in China but this one (from the ads specs perspective) feels like classic China product. Like old boomboxes with 1000 watts. It does the thing but why it is so hard to be honest :)

Yeah! Don't supply extra stuff that most people will use, supply something only a few people will use! Most divers are recreational divers, and use the lanyard so they can't drop their expensive torch. That it's only a back up torch for you doesn't negate the usefulness of a lanyard for other divers. If you don't want to use it, don't use it. You wanna attach a bolt snap, attach a bolt snap. And there's no way Orcatorch is going to supply an XDeep NX bolt snap. You're gonna get a bog standard bolt snap which is heavier and more expensive than a lanyard, and which you will replace anyways.

Much ado around about nothing. THere's a pouch in the bag that you can put additional items. Personal choice for where the switch is. Freedive spearfishermen prefer lanyards. Hunting in large caves it's better to use a wide spread light.
