Depression from divorce and custody got me cluttered and the clutter keeps me depressed. Single dad of 2 amazing kids, self employed and no help from anyone. Only ridicule. I have to work, take to school, pick up from school, band practice, football games, work very late due to the mid day of pickup from school, try to cook, laundry, divide my time to spend with people... I wake up at 2/3 am and typically go to sleep at about 10pm. I JUST! DON'T! KNOW! WHAT! TO! DO! I will try your 30 day challenge and see if I can get anything accomplished. Thank you for your videos. You hit the nail on the head with the “holding yourself accountable” for whatever you’ve committed to. My kitchen was a nightmare, much on the cupboards had very little to do with cooking! That all got cleared out…maintaining it was the real challenge. Post gutting all the stuff being sorted and dumped…by days end I have all kinds of stuff cluttering the worktops. Not that I could have done it earlier in the day….I make myself do it before I go to bed. It’s not fun, I often think, “I can do that in the morning.” I haven’t caved in once yet and my kitchen has been sorted out for a couple months. My grandma used to, “have a place for everything and put everything in its place.” Getting rid of stuff can be hard, but well worth it. Less IS more. Organizing is easy, especially if you watched Sesame Steet. Remember, “these three things belong together, one of these doesn’t?” Putting things away is easy once you’ve done step 1 & 2. I think of the “Cat in the Hat” children’s book. The Cat in the Hat ALWAYS cleaned up after himself before he left.

@@sarahj4cardsandcrafts my suggestion? Put his things away, but perhaps in a different place than he expects or is used to? Lol! Switch drawers or something on him. If he doesn't like how or where you put it away because he has to search, maybe he will organize things the way HE wants them, then put his things away. Or...if he doesn't like to tidy up clothes etc and they end up on the floor, don't pick them up and wash them. Sooner or later he is bound to run outta socks or underwear or whatever...if it doesn't go in the bin for laundry it doesn't get washed. Got to get creative. Decide on a nice basket and dump his stuff in it and put it in the junk cabinet/catchall drawer. Sooner or later when he cannot find it, he will start putting things away...so they don't disappear. 🤣🤣🤣

When it comes to linens (like towels and bedsheets) they recommend 3 per person; one that's being used, one that's in the dirty laundry, and one for backup for those 'just in case' situations. I'd recommend this for dishes, utensils and glassware, too. I can't imagine only having a single cup, plate and fork to use per person every single day. How would that person eat or drink while their dish was in the dishwasher? Cleaning off the dinner plate and drying it off in order to serve dessert is doable, but sounds like an unnecessary hassle.

I will always be grateful to Flylady because she taught me to make my bed. I must as soon as I get out of it, pull the covers up and straighten them. I have formed the habit so now I never leave the bedroom in the a.m. unless I make the bed. It is such a good thing to do. There is no more having to go to sleep at night and finding you have to make the bed before getting into it.

I declutterred and reorganized my entire apartment a month ago while listening to/watching your videos! I’m one of the people who regularly declutter (about 2-3 trash bags full twice a year) so I didn’t have much declutterring to do, but the organization tips were great! I have ADHD and I’ve lived in a perpetual cycle of 1 AM cleaning binges, slowly letting my apartment get worse until I couldn’t stand it (usually a 1-3 month cycle), then repeat. I’m proud to say my apartment looks almost as good today as it did a month ago. @-._.-KRiS-._.-2 жыл бұрын
Yes, with the amount of inflation going on right now, I'd agree that it would be better to find and dedicate a box or bin for craft things that you already have. I recently bought a craft starter kit for my preschooler and it stays in one of her drawers. We started a scrap box for all the reusable scraps and have another box that we throw empty toilet paper rolls, egg cartons, plastic cups, etc., in to be used for craft projects to help us keep the costs lowered. When that box is full, it's time to make more crafts!

Her HONESTY is so REFRESHING! I put a big plastic bin RIGHT next to my door that I put things to DONATE in. I also now have a rule that whenever I BUY something I DONATE TWO things. This has helped me SO MUCH. Also keeping your dvds, cds. etc. in the plastic binders & getting rid of all the boxes helps a lot. I also put all LIKE items together so you save TIME & MONEY not having to SEARCH for MISPLACED or LOST items this also reduces the CONFUSION too:)

I'm struggling with the daily tidy up. I have come quite far with my decluttering although I'm not at the perfect spot yet. Therefore every new video is a perfect push to find something else to declutter to eventually reach my ideal amount of stuff. And organizing is great! Decluttering has become a LOT easier for me since I started using the container method. I just decluttered my linen closet (which was an overflowing, hot mess!). I took everything out, and only put in matching towel sets I needed, sheet sets I needed, etc and it looks wonderful and is so functional now! The PILES of leftover items will be donated or tossed (as appropriate). I’m doing this with my entire house!!!
@dlsdyer90712 жыл бұрын
The key is starting and starting small. Find one surface and clear it off. The number one problem people do is trying to have a garage sale. Donate or throw it out. If the item is valuable enough put it on the marketplace. Putting out my clothes the night before and pulling out the frozen meat for dinner the next day makes me pick up the bedroom at night and think organization for the next day. It makes the next morning go well. Lastly, not every drawer/space needs to have something in it. I'm in my fifties and just figured this out in the past ten years. One other thing, it's destructive to keep measuring yourself against others. Challenge yourself and enjoy the progress you have made.

First, I love your transparency! You are real and I am crazy just like you. Decluttering is the 10 giant elephants in my house. I owned two businesses and have boxes by the hundreds of antiques, vintage clothes, plus boxes of clothing and miscellaneous from downsizing. I’m an only child and my mother passed, so I have all her stuff. My home is a warehouse. I’m ADD to add to the nightmare. I’m embarrassed to have a meeting with an auction company because they have to come into my home and see what I need to auction. IT WOULD TAKE A MIRACLE TO SEE WHAT IS FILLING UP THE ENTIRE UPSTAIRS OF MY HOME. It is certainly spilling down to the living portion of the house and Outside! Talk about drowning. I’m a tiny goldfish and my husband is beyond BEYOND the clutter and ready to flush me down the toilet. (I’m crazy also because I am still collecting more stuff)

Thank you sooo much for lighting a fire under me and my wife (she is already filling a trash bag)! We have struggled with this for years and are truly determined to make a change. We have trouble with all three areas and really appreciate your tips, advice and honesty (no fake butts for us! LOL). Thanks again!!!

So funny! Thank you, Cas, for reminding us that there are others out there who do outrageous things to impress even family. ha! The rest of the video was so helpful! I'm definitely having issues with decluttering. Organizing and tidiness are better for me. The decluttering is difficult when the mindset is always "I might need this receipt from five years ago". Working on it but any tips on paper clutter would be so helpful.

The 100% most important thing you can do after your big initial clean up, is to change your mindset on shopping. Ever since I stopped shopping for fun, the amount of mess in my home has dropped. Instead of feeling like I need to declutter every week, it's turned into every few months. And my declutter isn't a 3 day affair anymore, it's usually me getting rid of maybe 5 things. Not having a massive amount of things I don't really need coming into my home all the time has been so incredibly freeing

Same here. Shopping clutters your home and it destroys the planet. Just stop shopping. And tell your friends and family what you want for your birthday and Christmas so they can buy things that you really need. Right now most homes are filled with stuff they have been given as presents. Every year their homes are filled with stuff they don't need and then they purge most of it. It's so sad and it is killing the planet. 😫

I still love shopping, but my mindset around shopping has changed. Instead of bringing home every item that’s on sale and pretty I’m treasure hunting for the perfect item that exactly meets my needs and not settling. I find myself buying way less this way. And if I can buy it pre-owned or sustainable even better!

@@sarahholmes2138 The one place (type of place really) I still really enjoy shopping for fun is the thrift store. I love digging around for cool things, though I still go in with a general 'try to find' list. I got all of my desk organization things from a thrift store. It also lets me get the raw material for upcycling things, which lets me personalize things for myself and gifts for others with minimal cost and environmental impact. I'm currently in the middle of refinishing a beautiful wooden jewlrey box that was painted a horrendous yellow color and had stained drawer liners. It's going to be so pretty when it's done!

Never heard a truer word. I love buying things. I think it stems from never having much as a child. At 51 years old I am still working through it.

I really appreciate the decluttering printable. I feel like I’m ALWAYS cleaning. My 3rd baby was the game changer. The guest room (that was catch-all for stuff, gift wrap, etc) quickly became a nursery. It has forced me to deal with all that stuff. Plus, toys and my throw pillows constantly back on the floor as soon as I pick it up. This is life with young kids as I know it. I am ready to reclaim my home back this year. Thanks for the challenge!!

get rid of your pillows, it's a start. Got rid of all my "extra" for "show" bed pillows. They just ended up on the floor!

This video changed my life, my missing piece of the puzzle was the random clutter station. I bought a large dresser and problem solved! Now it's so much easier to keep the house tidy. Thank you!

We're moving in literally 30 days, so the 30 day challenge is PERFECT!! Lots of great tips, and I realized that if I get a timer out for a 10 minute tidy up, my kids would love it and think it's a game, so that's a great way to get them involved! Also, your story at the end 🤣🤣🤣

Organizing. I love it but don’t always know the best strategy. Btw, I’m glad your broken butt is now healed. Too funny!

Ohhhhhh perfect idea getting a timer from the dollar store to decorate into a clean timer to make it look like it’s for a game too-I am going to let my kids decide what and how to decorate it!
