You still have exposed wires, contacts, etc. that can short to ground. It didn't "fix" itself, the vibration from the starter running the motor, just moved it enough to where it's no longer shorted to ground. Hit a bump or something, and your problem will return. INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS ARE A BITCH!

It's good to see Triumph let their heritage shine through. From the 50's right up to the present day you will just get random electrical failures that leave you by the roadside. I own no less than three Triumphs from 1949-1958 and they all do this sort of thing from time to time, whether it's the distributor, points, alternator, dynamo, voltage rectifier or diodes you can guarantee as soon as you are the furthest point from your house on the ride, that is when the failure will occur. I'm keeping the local magneto rebuild man living a comfortable life. God bless Lucas, the prince of darkness.

Industrial technician here. You get one blown fuse. If you blow a second one you got a problem that will keep coming back. The good news is they know which fuse it is then it is anything tied to the fuse. In this case it seems to be the fuel pump or the wiring going to the fuel pump

I had an intermittent short with similar symptoms on my brake light harness. Sometimes it would work perfectly, and other times it would stall upon braking. As i eventually discovered, a seat bolt pinched the wire, but it only shorted when it got wet. You should always investigate a blown fuse even if it "fixes itself"

hi, guys funny story. fuel pump failure has this exact symptoms. It shorts the circuit so you blow fuses then it moves a tiny bit and everything is fine. it will almost for sure happen again, but try to bang on the tank./pump. next time if it happens while you have it. some times that helps.

Ran my 2020 R3 for 9000 miles (*plenty side to side Yam) & no problems tho as with all new bikes I changed out all the fuses when I picked up the bike and kept spares, sometimes even dealers put wrong rated fuses in and blade fuses notoriously fragile. And bad batches of fuses not unheard of. Also check the main terminal is properly attached and not loose. Spite, get a 3R, with quick shifter in sport mode for full throttle upshifts .. and hit the rev limiter at 7k, peak power at 6000rpm, peak torque at 4000rpm, more engaged riding position than GT, way broader band and upper end than any HD, Now sold mine but a great bike. 😎

Yeah man, I once spent a lot of money paying shops to try to track down a recurring fuel pump/electrical issue in a 96 Camaro . They never did solve it. Just replaced a bunch of parts that weren't actually the problem. I had to get in there and solve it myself in the end. Marked a turning point in my wrenching career. I realized no shop will ever be as motived as me to actually solve my problems, and sometimes motivation means more than experience. Now I'm DIY in as much of life as possible. It's liberating. Except swapping tires. I'm with Yam on that one. Bought the tools. Used them once to remove, patch, and remount a tire. Decided the $25 my tire guy wants to charge me for a mount and balance is more than fair. Not sure If I will ever use those spoons again heh.
@Gideon_Judges6
@Gideon_Judges6 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah you really can't beat it, especially the balance part. The equipment you would need to balance a tire at speed is not worth it for the typical enthusiast. Now aligment, you can get that pretty decent with some relatively inexpensive manual tools and measuring tape. More than accurate enough to get you to the alignment shop anyway.

This video is like déjà vu! A couple months ago, my brand new 2020 Daytona Moto 2 did exactly the same thing. We were on a ride in the mountains near Roanoke, VA when my bike suddenly quit. We diagnosed the blown fuel pump fuse and replaced it with the horn fuse (same rating). It immediately cranked up. As I opened the throttle to set off, it blew the fuse again. A month later, after it had sat in my garage untouched, I replaced the fuses and tried again. It immediately cranked, and opening the throttle didn't cut it out. I rode it around the block, then around the neighborhood, then around the greater neighborhood, and it worked fine. I rode it 30 miles with no problems. It's time for its first service anyway, so we'll see what the dealership says.

I love my R3GT, I did have a wiring issue early on with mine, but it was more with a zip tie next to a connector that for the tail lights, the connector wasn't in all the way and I lost my brake/tail lights.. so my guess is there's probably something with a harness.. there's a lot going on under that tank, the air box and charcoal canister are under there as well as all the hoses an wires.. so there's not a lot of room.. but other than that connector, the only other issue was needing to bleed the rear brake.. otherwise the bike has been amazing for 17k semi hard miles

Hi Yammie, the best way to find a short is to attach some wires to a headlight globe and add some terminals onto the ends of the wires, remove the fuse and attach each end into either terminal where the fuse was. If there is a short in the circuit the headlight globe will illuminate. Once you connect it up, go around the harness giving it a good wiggle, if you find a spot that makes the globe flash or flicker your in the right location. Be careful as the globe will get very hot so place it in a suitable location.

Was the fuel level lower at the time of initial problem? If so, it’s possible that the fuel pump got overheated and that caused the short as it is cooled by the surrounding fuel. I assume the fuel pump is massive to accommodate for the humongous and thirsty engine. Other possible problem, it’s British and most British manufactured vehicle are historically known for electrical gremlins 🤷🏻‍♂️

A loose fuse holder, maybe the insulation on one of the cables is thine, maybe two terminals or clips are close to each other, perhaps another circuit gave a wrong reading leading to an overload, basically this illustrates why I am so against having too many electronics on a bike, when they go bad they can be worse than carburators.

What can happen with cables is that there is a short to ground and the arcing involved at the fault can force the cable away from ground, you can get this sort of fault in washing machines etc. then later as the cable relaxes again it can fall back into the fault position and again be blown away, thus creating an intermittent fault. Triumph need to strip it down a bit and look for damage to cables or signs of an electrical short. Ian

If that EFI circuit runs right at that raggedy edge of 7.5 amps(that would be a design flaw, but hey it's a Triumph) AND the engine was hot AND the ambient temperature was high, it is entirely possible the fuse blew somewhere below it's rated amperage. Fuses are affected by ambient temperature and that thing is sitting 6 inches or less from the engine. Not saying it's not a short or some other problem, but I know from my industrial experience that some equipment, running in hellish temperatures simply needs a step up in fusing. I had a fuse blowing on compressed air dryer every time someone closed the window in the compressor room. We measured the amperage with a log and the motor never went out of spec...yet when the room heated up 10 more degrees, the fuse would blow.

Look into the 'capacitor plague' for a recent example of large percentage of a single electrical component being faulty and still making it out into circulation. Nothing new with fuses

I like how he said on his Daytona he just jiggles this (as he is jiggling it) and it just turns on, and then it turns on and starts working.

The single sided swing arm on this bike is giving me an optical illusion from the side profile that makes it look like a trike. It looks like the rear wheel is closer to me than the front wheel

In my opinion it's the ECU. I've had to have my ECU updated on my Triumph (Not a Rocket 3). It works magic. There was a hiccup in the ECU on this Rocket that caused an electrical issue with the fuel injection. Once you put the higher fuse in there it allowed the ECU to correct itself because the engine was running. That allowed you to put a lower amp fuse in it. IMHO

i had a ninja 650 that had exactly this problem. turns out the tip over sensor had a short and on a weird bump would cause it to trigger. for whatever reason the tip over sensor only cuts the ignition and not the fuel pump and starter.

My rocket did this, now the anti theft has locked it off. After the rear brake issue the dealer can't seem to fix. Triumph is great when it works properly.

Plot twist... the fuse box cover is labeled for a 10A fuse not a 7.5A. Just talking out of my gooch juice repository, but it would be funny.

Funny. My MT-07 did the same thing. After owning, probably 15 different vehicles over the past 6 years, I've learned anything with a engine is a sh*tbox! I just drive and ride whatever now and dont worry much about "Reliability"

You will never have this kind of issues with a Yamaha V-max. You should definitely do a side by side comparison between these two monsters.

I’m extremely interested in picking up a Vmax to add to my garage, but I’m worried that I might be a little cramped on one since I’m 6 ft’ 2 inches tall. I’m assuming you either own or have ridden one, do you think I would be too big for it? And have you ever ridden any of the other “big 4” muscle cruisers to compare the Vmax too? I have a Yamaha warrior 1700 and a Honda VTX1800F1 which are both completely bad-ass bikes

@@kurtmessenger2034 I own the 1st gen Vmax (I can already hear Yammie noob shout "eew carburetors") But it has Been one of my Grail bikes. I am 6ft and sit comfortably on it. I do see a lot of guys get forward pegs to help with comfort. I'd maybe suggest for you that would be the best route to go. I have not had the opportunity to compare the Vmax to other Japanese muscle Cruizers unfortunately but I would definitely love to try them out one day

@@kurtmessenger2034 I don't have anything to add regarding the vmax (I've only owned the 1200), but as an owner of a warrior and a diavel 1260, I now prefer the 1260 and my warrior just sits. More comfy. Bought a raised seat to add an inch and I can ride it longer than my warrior for sure. Plus it has cruise control. FYI, I'm a big guy, but not as tall as you...5'10"/280lb.
