As a double dog, single cat servant; There was lot of smoke thrown here from people making furniture for people not pets. A little bit concerning. 1) Always drawers, period. Somewhere to put and secure the 15 toys that get "fetched" from the milk crate everyday is a godsend. Single large drawer with with ready to find handle. Don't get artsy. 2) A solid panel on one of the bed openings. This allows an "isolation" wall for the pet to feel more secure. 3) The open (door) wall should be an entire door. If a pet is seriously sick or infirm they will look for a place to disappear into. Forcing an owner, in an already stressful problem by trying to reach into a hole to retrieve some animal who doesn't want anything to do with the world. Good way to get bitten. 4) The top "cubby" needs to be lined with felt. To mitigate dropping sound to animal underneath. 5) Door side must be metal grill. Anyone who has had a teething puppy has had to replace "heirloom" furniture. 6) If still concerned about human storage take magazine rack from modular desk for end. Remotes wont be stored in the top, not easy enough access. 7) The door wall needs to be its own assembly and dropped in through the top cubby. Will add to durability to the door wall. Will also allow replacement if damaged. 8) Different height options. Not everyone has a purse pupper. Much rather give up a couple of inches for animal to make them more comfortable then having them squeeze into a bed. 9) Run a mag rail on all four sides to tie in accessories. Daddy and his buddies still need somewhere to put the refreshments. 10) Incorporate a plastic tray underneath the bed pad. Some pets get excited, nervous, anxious, in their own home and urinate. Sad to loose a piece of furniture to something uncontrollable. Sorry for the word wall. Just thought you fine gents might be going in a wrong direction. Not a coffee table looking like a kennel, but should be a kennel that happens to look like a coffee table. Otherwise pet owners might not give it a second look. Focus the pet = Profit.

I can't believe the one drawer option wasn't a discussion. It could hold leashes, lots of toys, dry rain jackets, treats, whatever. They already had the storage area under the top which would likely hold papers, pens, remotes, controllers. One drawer would remove Jason's concerns about it being hidden and provide a lot of functionality.

As a fellow dog slave, one of which is an old lady that likes to hide in her house and has urinary issues, you are spot on with all your points. Also as a woodworker that has made dog kennels, you have to think of some things: dog escape/play - make sure those panels can't be removed/popped-off by a dog either goofing around, pawing, or in distress. Cleanability - there will be accidents - both from the bottom of the dog and the mouth.

The modular desk idea is a good idea. It allows the customer to pick which option they like - drawers or shelves. The pull shelf that Ian offered was also a good idea. If memory serves, didn't Crazy Ed create a prototype where the panels slid into grooves and could be stored underneath of the table? Looking forward to see what else you guys come up with. Also, don't forget a rubber mat to put in the pupper area for when there are accidents - to protect the wood.

5:57 Maybe we could make a cubby system with baskets that are attached to the table by rails. Then we can pull these “baskets” out as needed to access the space and when they are closed it makes a flush surface. We could even make these “baskets” out of the same wood as the table so they match, maybe the top “basket” has the handle at the top and the bottom “basket” has the handle at the bottom. We would just want to make sure that these “baskets” are easy to get open and that they pull out the full distance.

The issue with drawers facing you that are that thin and deep, is they won't be able to extend them out all the way with the couch, depending on how close they keep this to their couch. They could possibly do 3/4 deep drawers that open to whichever side the top pulls up to, and then 1/4 shelf/cubby opposite the door on the outside end. That's like a decoration area anyway, it's what everyone else sees when they come in your room.

Everyone has good points here. I really feel Jason's pain, because the shelves on the side are a better piece of design and it just makes the whole coffee table look nicer as a piece of furniture. Also for my personal use case I would want the shelves -- I think a lot of people already have coffee tables with a lower level underneath, and may have things they want to store that won't fit if you do drawers. Additionally our couch is close to the coffee table, so side access makes more sense for us. That said, people do like hidden things, and drawers are maybe more unusually useful as storage. If you can offer both, that would be best. Also front access probably makes more sense for a lot of people too. This is one of those things where opinions of customers will vary wildly.

You don't hide the toys away. You want the toys exposed. That way the dog has access to them anytime he wants. If you don't, the dogs going to know where the toys are at and he's going to tear it up trying to get to them. The toys are there to keep the dog occupied and entertained when you're not around. You should offer both options just like you do the desk. Personally, I'd like a shelf and a drawer. You should make the kennel wall a double door that slides one to the left and one to the right.

A place to put your feet so your dog is in some sort of contact/ comfort 2. A way to divide crate to adjust size. A crate should be big enough to stand up and turn around in and not much else 3. Does this thing soak up pee? I would ask a dog trainer or a behavioral expert in general

I would also recommend grabbing different dogs to see what sizes/weights would fit in the kennel, how they would try to enter it, how the dog could damage the furniture, etc since that may also affect the design. Also, consider selling a waterproof liner on the inside in case the dog has an accident , so the table doesn't get ruined/absorb the smell. Depending on how close the table is the couch you may only be able to open a drawer so much. If you want to have that cubby area just be a dog toy throw bin, then you could cut the table top to have a mini topper that you could remove to throw all the toys in the table bin.

is this dog bed supposed to fall in with your prophecy line of furniture, or in your modular line of furniture, because if its modular, why wouldnt you utilize your already existing solution from the MODULAR desk, so that your customers can decide? Ive also been wondering if anyone had done any research into whether or not there is a recommended kennel size(square footage) for a particular size(weight) of dog, because it may be that having the kennel isnt worth the effort? If you can sell it as an open dog bed and any animal can utilize it, and you also dont have to worry about complaints of "my dog wont fit" or any lawsuits(not that we dont love Frank) concerning, "My dog was injured while in side the kennel feature" because of airflow, heat, or chewing on something that they shouldnt. like, there is a reason that Dog kennels are made the way that they are for safety and security of the animal.

regarding drawers vs cubbys. Keep in mind if this is dog height, cubbies provide no protection from your dogs getting at the things. Another option for shelves would be to put them on both ends with the kennel centered in the middle of the table. That way you would have storage on both ends and it isn't too deep to reach inside. I agree with Jason, the current drawers look like a bad/damaged side panels and if you are keeping the storage on 1 side, make it compatible with the cubby, drawer, cabinet module for the desks. That would give max flexibility for customers.

If you have to use a basket might as well use a drawer. The shelf/cubby is ideal for books or quick access but out of the way of main working surface.

I no longer have a dog but my cats would love this and I would like it just in general for the living room. Better than the ottoman I use.

I like the sliding tray idea. As well as the modularity idea.

Doug all dressed up making design choices isn't as convincing as worker guy Doug doing the same.

Some good ideas in the comments. Overall I’m with Jason. And it’s not just cause my wife is getting a modular desk… Standardizing it on the modular system and allowing for options sounds like a great idea. Two drawers… yup. Two cubbies… yup. One drawer, one cubby… yup. One drawer, and a door for the cubby… yup. Etc.

Also, I wouldn’t use cubbies for random crap, it’d be things like books and magazines. We wouldn’t be digging around in there, getting aggravated like Doug implied.

I love both concepts bit I also feel like combining the ideas would be a cool too. Hidden drawer on the bottom and shelf on the top.

What about bins that pull out (tip out) on each side, something deep for dog toys?

What do you guys do with all the prototypes? I kinda really want them....

Can you guys do top shelf in a tray style and keep a bottom drawer? That way you have the best of both, Keep rail access while keeping a drawer for pup toys. I also agree with front access. I would never use side access drawers.
