Our RV DOOR DEADBOLT is STICKING (RV LIFE, RV LIVING)

Have you ever had trouble unlocking your RV because of a sticky deadbolt? Us too. We nearly got locked out of our rig because the deadbolt got stuck.
I'm not a locksmith: This is what I did to fix our problem and it worked. You may need to do something different if your deadbolt is sticking, including calling a locksmith or replacing your deadbolt mechanism.
Here's what happened.
For the past couple of months our Grand Design Reflections RV door deadbolt has been getting harder and harder to lock and unlock.
The day finally came when I could barely lock it when we were leaving. When we returned the key wouldn't turn the lock and I thought we were going to have to call a locksmith or someone to figure out how to get it unlocked.
With a little pushing on the door and turning the key as hard as I could I finally got the deadbolt to unlock. A few days later I got around to taking the the door mechanism apart and fixing the deadbolt.
Now it works as good as new ... better even.
FYI we did eventually install a new lock and key system. Thanks for watching.

Great video. I have the same latch on the people door of a new cargo trailer. I was able to jiggle the door and key to get the deadbolt to break loose. Once is was open, I saw some of the white corrosion on deadbolt. I lubed everything up with the yellow top WD40 and hopefully this won't happen again anytime soon. Thanks again for the video.

Only reason, I can say, is that the lock mechanism. Is designed to withstand rain. However, if the handle, is loose. It can possibly rust it over time. However, from my experience, in carnival. Most wear out over time from slamming, or doors which are no longer level or straight. For instance, I have to lift door 3 inches to get in frame to close.

Another video w/ this same problem recommended filing the deadbolt. A burr develops on the bolt preventing retracting. No need to replace.

If you look at the video at 3:40 you will see the usual problem with RV parts today . . . "MADE IN CHINA" and is probably made of plastic. I'm on a search right now to find one that is "MADE IN USA" and made of metal for my motorhome.

Word of advice - remove the inside part. Look at the metal shaft that locks/unlocks the deadbolt. A metal plate covers the deadbolt mechanism, secured by 2 screws. CHECK THOSE SCREWS! Make sure they are tight!! Otherwise, the deadbolt will eventually stop working.

Maybe the plate the deadbolt goes into on the frame needs adjustments . I saw another video where interior lock screws had come loose or fallen out and needed to be reinstalled with lock tite. Problem solved

Hey, thanks for the advice. The day after the video was shot for some reason the door started hitting that strike plate (I think that's what it's called). It was tight but I did adjust it all the way forward and retighten it as tight as I could. That seemed to align everything. The door seems to be working fine since. Thanks.

Maybe your key is worn out causing your tumbler to drag and not allow a smooth turn.

I need to be able to open the deadbolt without a key and without drilling it out and replacing the whole latch.... my passed brother wildwood camper is doing nobody any good while it takes up space on my land

Hi Angela. Sorry I don’t have any suggestions beyond the basics like trying to spray WD-40 or Silicone spray into keyhole beside the key. Once you get it out let us know how you did it and what the cause is. I’ve had my key stick a little before but just wiggling it around freed it. Good luck.

Broke my key off in the dead bolt lock. I hope I can crawl thru storage space to get it from the inside. Ordered a Keyless lock. Prayers for simple resolution.

@@mikenelson1181 I got my storage door lock open with a small pocket knife.... but there's a wood covering under the bed going all the way across... don't want to damage the wood piece under the bed to get inside to open the deadbolt... no key passed relatives camper on my land.. so I need to be using it

Hey there. Sorry you are having trouble with your lock. I wonder if spraying WD-40 or silicone spray into your lock would do anything? A locksmith may be able to give you some suggestions to get it working again. Good luck and let us know how you finally get it to work.
