The few times I have called the cops to report something, they have always come off as if they doubted me and/or questioned me like a suspect. Not "Thanks for calling us". Doesn't send a good message to good citizens.

I believe the reason the police officer was taking down all the license plate and ID info was because there is a chance these guns were involved in crimes. If they are, and there's a legal case brought against someone from the resulting investigation, they may need to ask for the video footage later or even testify to how and where the weapons were found. That's just a guess though.

What a small world! Way back in the 80’s I grew up just down the road from where this video was filmed. I can confirm that your statement within the first 20 seconds is 100% accurate. As an elementary school kid back then we rode bikes on that forest path but we were warned to NEVER go alone. By the time I got to middle school that particular area was on a rapid decline and to this day, is pretty well known for its high crime rates. I’m glad to see that you and your crew remained safe and reported your findings to the proper authorities. Some of those places can be pretty hairy at times. It’s really sad to see the area of my childhood go completely downhill as it has. I’m happy to say that I moved away many moons ago and no longer live in that state. They're not allowed to "run the serial numbers" and advise you over the phone that something is or is not wanted. I'm betting that in the jurisdiction they're in, as in most, they're not allowed to "keep them so long as they're not reported...". In most jurisdictions anything found in a public waterway, or anywhere else, does not become the property of the finder. You can't "find" a gun, car, dog, tool, boat trailer etc and simply claim it's yours. It's also likely the very act of magnet fishing from the side of the public roadway is technically not legal.

One suggestion gentlemen is to carry a container of fresh water, some dish soap, a some brushes and rags so you can clean off something like a gun right away. In Canada we have a fraction of the guns you have with strict laws so any I find will result in fast phone call to the Police. We do have a serious young Gang problem in the area. @Mike_stuy
@Mike_stuy 2 жыл бұрын
it depends on the state though, in any state they can run your tags whenever they want as police kinda need to do that to see if a car is stolen or if it is legally on the road. Now when it comes to ID. Depending on the state they can in fact demand ID, as some states have a stop and identify law meaning that the police can stop anyone in public on the sidewalk or in a vehicle to produce identification. Either way, these two cops were very cordial in the encounter and them asking for ID and the Plate number is standard in a situation like this. Especially if the person who found the weapons is filming, as the video may be required to be siezed as evidence for a later investigation (if it comes to that). so it makes sense to get the info of the person who owns the footage to have a way to get that file at any time. Also if the guy were to refuse to give the file then the police could take the next step and get a warrent for the data, which would most likely be approved right away as video evidence is usually "king" in ongoing investigations.
@altaridem
@altaridem 2 жыл бұрын
@@Mike_stuy those "stop and identify" laws are supposed to only be employed by an officer if a person is suspected of commiting a crime. And from what I'm reading online, they can only ask for their name. Not their actual ID (granted I didn't delve deep into this). All of that aside. The fact that people are being investigated while having no reasonal suspicion is not ok. But. Due to a lack of education on the behalf of the citizen, police pretty much do whatever they want because people don't know any better. Even if it violates their rights. Yes. The police were cordial. But they can fuck right off for running his tags and ID. Had he refused they would have arrested him for resisting arrest (like they always do) even though they were claiming to arrest him on no claim of crime.

@@OntarioGuy430 that doesn't make it ok. We literally are supposed to have protections in place to stop this sort of thing from happening. Most people are clueless that it's a violation of their rights so it's become common place. I don't agree with it at all. It's created a situation where the people who know their rights, get arrested for resisting arrest because they expect the police (of all people) to follow the very law they are supposed to enforce. Let that sink in. This common place has made it so people get arrested for "resisting arrest" even though they were not under arrest to begin with. 99.9% of the time the charges are immediately dropped. But it doesn't change the hassle, potential harm, danger, and trauma getting arrested inflicts upon an individual. But. Most people are ignorant to this fact so the police become more and more complacent with violating our rights (that most people don't even know they have). So much so that they don't even look at it like they are doing anything wrong. They think people with knowledge are a problem.

The ID thing was probably just about filing them finding it correctly. Not a huge fan of US police but not everything is some underhanded attempt to boost their case numbers.

Nice? The female officer pointed a handgun that she knew nothing about at the cameraman and passing traffic. That’s flat out negligent and not acceptable in any way.

I'd be concerned if they hadn't. It wouldn't be the first time a serial killer reported his own crime/his own evidence, just to mess with the investigation. Leads me to believe there's open assault/murder investigations, and they're covering their bases so they don't end up with egg on their face if it had turned out one of the guys was connected to the weapons. It's pretty straight forward, really...

It is really cool and fun what you guys do. However, you need to stop storing potential crime evidence inside your vehicle. When you pull up the evidence, lower it onto the ground at the area that you seized it. Let law enforcement deal with it from there.

Awesome finds today Jeff, Dani, and friend. I found it weird that the officer was having a hard time reading Dani's license plate. That one letter or number looks like a D , but it could be an 0. When your home, I would go and confirm it with mto, as to what it is, so you know for the next time you find a firearm. I've never seen the police do a plate check on any of you. Identification yes, but never a plate number. Have a great day my friend's ❤😊.

It is a cop's discretion to run a plate but I'd say to run the plate of someone who called in something is using that discretion poorly. She could have easily ran the plates without being so obvious too...that's tactful.
