Today we went magnet fishing in Freeport Illinois and found a motorcycle and something that left the police asking big question. We really have never found anything like this before magnet fishing. We had to the call the police right away and they had to call a police detective down to the river to witness the things that we found magnet fishing. The police detective was shocked and confiscated all our best magnet fishing finds. We also found much more than this today magnet fishing like a historic civil war cannon ball. DO NOT LET IT DRY OUT ... a bucket with a rope on it to collect that water is handy ... and a tote to hold them in while you wait on the cops ... btw ANY weapon or ammunition ... keep it wet ... it is safer for you that way ... and NEVER point a gun at people or places where people may be .. until you have personally verified it is empty ... the gun IS LOADED

As a firearms instructor (and married to a former military firearms instructor) I’m telling you you should always, always treat a gun as if it’s loaded even if you’re sure it isn’t. So many people don’t and that is why there are thousands of accidental shootings in the US each year.

Those responsible with their fire arms are very well aware. If you own them you also should show your family members, if not that makes one an irresponsible owner/user. I knew guns were "always loaded" and never to be afraid of the gun. I've been shooting since I was 10 years old. Even my young adults know how to handle a gun, even when we didn't own any.

A cannon ball is just metal. Gunpowder goes behind it in the cannon. It has no powder in the ball itself.

@@esthersmith3341 actually it is solid shot and not explosive. There was explosive cannon shot. Explosive shot was used for anti personal. And another round was used for close anti infantry, I believe it was called canister or grape shot.

@@theodorewiltrout4749 I am not fond of old type muzzle loaders or cannons. Too loud, but the principle is the same. Wadding, powder, ball. The wick or flint goes in the end or trigger point, a cap in muzzle loader. I don't use these but have been around them. I much rather a bullet. Easier and not so loud. Cannons work on this same principle as a muzzle loader. If you are going to magnet fish, I suggest you take a firearm course before you blow your head off, or someone else's. A loaded wet gun will still fire if it hasn't been dumped long.

Civil war era cannonballs could definitely be explosive with powder inside a hollow cast iron ball. The fuse was screwed into the ball and was ignited by the deflagrating powder when the cannon was fired. More importantly. When one of those dries out, it may still be explosive, regardless of the age.

Never assume on Cannon balls. They Did make Small Explosive Cannon Balls. Ones with Fuses and ones that you Light too. So Even though its Small, Treat them as Explosives and Have them CHECKED OUT. Always Let the Police/Bomb Squad Know about this stuff. and Always Turn in ANY gun even if its badly corroded and damaged ALWAYS let the Police Decide if you can keep it Or not.

I'm just a little surprised that the police wouldn't go just a little bit above and beyond their normal investigative duties and actually dredge these areas and these creeks and lakes to find evidence of crimes. I think we all need reform; I know I do. We can't count on law enforcement or government to fix all our problems; we all need accountability. I can only hope that what happened in Uvalde will be investigated, exposed and corrected. After listening to the doctors that treated those babies describing how devastating the damage to their little bodies was from that AR15, I think banning those types of weapons would have been a good place to start to prevent such devastation.

With electrolysis, you would be surprised how much you can get from a rusty firearm. It can clean off amazing amounts of corrosion and produce mind-blowing results. And please, PLEASE don't knock stuff off of old ordnance! That "rock" might well have been part of an explosive component of the ordnance.
