I'm writing my Master's thesis on how user interfaces enable sociability in video games. I find this presentation interesting and relevant to my research and I hadn't thought about how games can improve an autistic person's social skills and in doing so actually enable them. It's funny how sometimes it's hard to realize the different needs of people when designing a product but I'm now a little better informed.

Thank you for caring about the social challenges that so many children face! Also for trying so hard to come up with a way to help them cope with those challenges in a way that doesn't feel like more homework. I wish something like this had existed when I was in grade school or primary school back in the 70's. It might have helped me to make friends and to cope with the anxiety of failing to understand the way that subjects were being taught to me. The closest thing to the program that you describe here that I experienced was 4-H Club, especially doing demotalks and talking with judges about my entries in the county fair. It would have been even more fun if there had been a videogame component to it like the one you describe. What we did have still helped me to some degree with learning to interact with others and to express my ideas in a way that they could understand. My mom also had to enroll me in 4-H with our own money and help me with the projects during summer vacation rather than having anything like it at school.

I love this women already and I haven't even heard her talk. I think video games are a great way to overcome having autism or dealing with it as they say. I have a form of autism called Aspergers which now no longer is being diagnosed. If I had been diagnosed today I would have been diagnosed with ASD or Autism Spectrum Disorder which makes no sense but there it is.

@Pateck Aaron also probably not wisest to say that to people who accept autism as a problem only with unkind people

I am autistic and like video games. First person shooters, martial arts fighting games and open world games are my favorite

I love this idea! I have Asperger's (adult diagnosis) and I actually used conversational dialog from video games and TV to learn how to communicate better with my peers. This helped me dramatically to help me interact with other kids! As an adult I have learned that some of the rules I picked up through this method are wrong because of differences in subtext between real life interactions and TV/video game interactions. A game that accurately depicts these things would definitely have helped me.

I saw about it and had to learn in similar ways as well. There was a scientific autism specialized site I've checked that explained how autistic people need to find manuals and tutorials of social interactions to understand people's facial expression and mainstream social culture. Quite amusing the idea that it's like we are reading books on "How to Neurotypical" lol Renae Beaumont is not only from a legendary vampire hunter lineage but also a genius!

Please tell me what site it was! I REALLY could use a manual like that. PLEASE!

Just about to sign up for the training and introduce the program across 4 campuses. Highly recommended by parents who have children on the autism spectrum or for those children who have disordered adjustment, disengagement from learning and behavioural issues who need to build their social and emotional competencies.

Will you ever have a video game for social skills for autistic adults? I wish they would have more therapies and help for autistic adults who were diagnosed late or just not diagnosed right at all.... That would be great because I have TERRIBLE social skills in real life....

@lendrury27715 жыл бұрын
janke Leroij video games need to be limited because autistic kids and adults get seriously over stimulated and that can cause serious problems. Our son.was having bad seizures and extra radical behavior when he was engaging in these games for hours each day. So we had some testing done and our team of doctors said cool it with the video games

The story about Sam's flute. Reminds me of when my mom tried teaching me how to drive. Yes I could drive, my driving had the rigidness of a robot instead of the fluidity of person. The difference was so slight, barely noticeable, but enough to induce panic in others.

Autistic people are great the way they are. We have a different neurotype and different support needs because the world was not built with us in mind. We don't need to be cured or trained like dogs. Stop doing medical experiments on us for profit. I would encourage any parent of autistic kids watching this to stop and watch something more autism-affirming... and maybe get yourself assessed for autism because it runs in families.
