Overtime Isn't Enough To Catch Up With Payments - Til Debt Do Us Part - Catering To Catastophe

After being in their home for four years, Karyn and Mark decided to refinance so they could consolidate their consumer debt and put in a $40,000 catering kitchen. Now this couple owes more on their home than they paid for it in the first place. Even worse, the catering business isn’t bringing in enough to cover the costs of the increased mortgage. And with Mark working overtime to support his family, he doesn’t have the time to do the repair jobs around the house that Karyn won’t touch. Gail Vaz-Oxlade has cooked up a plan to get them off the catastrophic track they’re on so they can start putting some much needed dough towards their mortgage and debt. But Karyn has to pick up some major slack in order for this family to succeed. -

I was getting further and further into debt because of my first husband. He was just not on board with budgeting. He grew up poor and refused to look like we were poor so he was quite the shopper. I'm so glad that Karen woke up. I'll be honest I was skeptical but she became HIGHLY motivated when all was said and done. Definitely a 360. And that husband was so happy by the end. The relief he felt from some of this off his shoulders. He looked more rested. Even the way they were looking at each other in the end. The love was always there but now theres hope!! Not to mention appreciation.

Funny how styles of furniture and colors have changed in 20-25 years. 😅 Just when you get everything “updated” , it’s time to update again. When I was a kid we didn't have credit cards, the most we had was "lay-away," you would go to the store and make payments on the item (which was kept at the store!!) and when it was paid off you could take it home. Not before. If you stopped paying you lost the item and your payments.

Been there done that! Food caterer makes much less than a specialty cake decorator! You are so lucky to have a special licensed kitchen in your home! Far less physical work to be a bespoke cake purveyor! I learned to make sugar flowers to decorate all the cakes. There are so many videos out there to do this.

I was once given great advice from a small business owner…he said not to overbuy because you don’t really know what you need to have at first. It seems to me that the catering kitchen wasn’t necessary, she could have done the cooking in her regular kitchen. Frankly, she doesn’t really know if she’ll enjoy catering or if it’s worth it.

I've purchased 2 homes as a single woman. I begin making plans for ONE ROOM at a time. I don't move on until that room is complete. I do all my own paint, wallpaper, curtains/drapes and upholstery. The couple's estimate of $250 for kitchen curtains is absurd. They can be made (and lined) for $25 - $50. I don't know if a Reverse Mortgage type of program is available in Canada, but utilizing one in the US can pay off any remaining mortgage and allow seniors to live in their home without that payment after retirement.

I raised 2 children on my own, (1 autistic needing extra tuition) and have NEVER had a credit card. You work as much as you can, l didn't buy anything new until they were in high school. You pay things off "before" taking it home. We holiday, they both play sport etc, we go without nothing that we need..need, not want. Our holidays were camping or budget stays with a kitchen so l always cooked, saves so much on a holiday.

Where I worked there was a spate of yearly overtime. An old section would have a few months of this extra income. After leaving this section I returned to help them out. This became a huge bonus to staff to triple their income for 3-4 months but then suddenly as technology surpassed the need for manual data entry. Whilst this was a wonderful money earner it became a way of life for most staff who earned thousands more every month for 3-4 months.

The wife was the issue. Gail was sort easy on her. The catering business was pretty much a hobby. The kids were old enough for her to work full time. The Renos were pointless as everything would have had to redone when sold. Nothing was timeless design. The homes they looked at were fine but she was yuk to all of them.

There are a lot of things missing from the school system. How to manage a house, how to parent, how to budget, how to socialise appropriately, how to manage a work and social life effectively, how to study effectively, how to take notes effectively, how to answer tests effectively, how to manage stocks and shares. Actually, my school didn't even teach us how to tell time. But we had sign language classes in a school with no deaf or serious learning difficulties students or teachers. Strange.
