FYI, no that it matters much but usually the deadbolt goes above the latch set. When you install the other doors , bedrooms etc, they typically are set at a standard height , unless people are extra tall or short, so they all are the same.

Thank you!! We debated about it for a while but in the end chose to do it that way to match the other door in the garage where the handle is on top.

You may not realize that your background in working with steel, and the precision required to get good results, makes you an excellent carpenter. As time goes on, you will discover that wood is much more forgiving than steel, so your carpenter work will ne excellent!

Looks great. Typically the deadbolt goes in the upper hole and the handle goes in the lower. Not sure if there are codes about this. Also, if you are concerned about security, you would want your door to open inward so the door pins are inside. The way you have it, one could easily break into your upstairs from the garage by removing your door pins. Keep up the good work!

Thank you!! We actually had a discussion about this, but in the end we decided to do it that way because the other door in the garage is that way, so they match in a way. :)

Very valid points about the door orientation, plus its more natural to push a door closed to an abusive unwanted person or potential intruder, versus having to lean out to try pull the door closed.

Hi, an ice but maybe too late is adding a transom window above the door to let in more light into the stairwell, rather than framing in and enclosing the space.

@markryan3739

Thinking the same thing. 3mm poly, tuck taped, with spray foam would go a long way in preventing vehicle off-gasses from going places they shouldn't.

Installing plywood as a mounting base for cabinets is smart. “Harsh weather” or not, the plywood will last forever in this area.

Jeez that set-out hurt to watch. If you guys are going to be doing a lot of framing, get yourself a mitre saw, it'll save you about a billion hours and so much messing about. As a general rule, if you can, you build the walls flat on the floor as a single wall, which makes them perfect and means you can nail through the top and bottom plates straight into the studs which is much stronger than nailing at an angle through the stud into the bottom and top plates. You can also set up where your studs are on both plates at the same time which means you don't have to plumb up the studs individually and you know they're going to be flush with the plates. Then you stand the walls up, make sure they're plumb and at 90 degrees to each other and connect them together so they're perfect and then connect them to the existing wall, floor and ceiling. That way, any micro-adjustments you need can easily be made. You should be able to shoot the ramset gun into the ceiling slab, through the steel too btw, you just might need to use a stronger charge than for just concrete. You got there in the end though and your build is awesome, I'm looking forward to seeing you get to the interiors soon!
@PacificPinesRanch

We definitely need a mitre saw! The reason why we built it in place is because the garage is sloped for drainage, so it was easier to build it in place to make sure all the measurements and setup was correct. In the future, we will definitely build the walls on the ground and raise them up though. :) Thx so much for the tips!!

Was there a reason your walls aren't square?
@PacificPinesRanch

We maximized the layout of our land to have as much space as possible, so we have one wall that is not 90 degrees to the rest of the house (the ICF wall), but everything else is square.

A tip for door openings. Score the underside of the plate where you're going to cut. Works anywhere, but especially on concrete. Just set your saw to 1/2"
