My longest interview was 8 hours. I was flown in to Denver. First thing was someone from HR and the director of maintenance. I am an aircraft mechanic. Next I cycled through heads of all of the departments that I would be working with. Then lunch with 2 other supervisors. We went to a Mexican place. The server was telling us about the margarita specials. I didn’t fall for that. Then I was sent to a medical clinic on the airport for a physical and drug test. We wrapped it up and I went back to my hotel room. Flew home the next day. A few days later I got a written offer in the mail. 13 years with that company.

I wished I had watch this video before my panel interview I had today. I’ve watched your previous videos which helped me greatly. Today’s interview I was mostly prepared for until the GM asked me the following question “ if you have a team of 10 people that are working on projects and they only completed half of the job, what would I do even though I’m not their manager.” I reflect on my answer and said “ I would be following up, and assists them where they needed help”. But I feel my answer should have been “ follow up, see the opportunities, offer a solution, then follow up again.” I felt defeated after that question came up, goes to show you can never be too prepared in today’s job market.

But to all those looking for Federal employment. Do not give up! I only have an Associates degree however I do have a Schedule A letter with alot of experience in Administration. Also, the more documents being submitted the better. Example: cover letter, writing samples, schedule A letter, resume, award letters, etc. And you must cater your resume to the position. This MUST be done and resume must be formatted as a Federal resume not like a regular resume....good luck!

Two tips I would add, ask for business cards up front and arrange them in order of the panel. This way you know who you are speaking with and you can write a follow up or thank you email afterwards. Another tip is to ask up front what the panel thinks are the key skills for the job, focus your stories on those items, and ask at the end if they have any questions or concerns you can address at this time.

I love panel interviews. I get to see how the different managers interact with each other and if HR is there it avoids any potential miscommunication between departments. It also avoids the redundancy of meeting each individual and answering the same questions half-dozen times. I think that it also shows that the company has its act together and can handle the scheduling logistics of pulling all of these individuals together at once.

Had a panel interview last week. Great video! I really wish I watched this prior. I’ve been in this interview process for a corporate training position for about 3 weeks now. For the backstory I graduated college 3 years ago and started a training institute at a nonprofit to get the experience needed for a real job. I’m finally ready to apply to those jobs with my experience at the nonprofit and it’s been 9 months of straight rejection. Well the past three weeks I’ve gotten so dang far (used your videos everyday instead of music and they have been so helpful in the process, just wish I watched this and not only focus on my training). On Friday I had to do an 18 minute presentation/training on a customer service topic of my choice. I had to train 17 members of the team all ranging to directors, managers, regional managers, national managers, and all the trainers on the training team! I think it went really well but I was so focused on creating an amazing presentation I forgot to prepare the interview. Tip to anyone going into an interview with a panel of your potential peers. Come up with an 18 month plan that includes how you will learn the job, what success for you will look like, annnddd add your plan for getting close with the team. Finally have some questions for the team on what they recommend you focus on to get caught up and up to speed. I did really well and we will find out next week but had I prepped this it would have been really squared away.

It’s so true about short term memory. As nervous as I am, I know once I start talking, my words are just going to flow nicely because I’ve been studying my answers over and over ( on paper of course) for about 2 weeks now. Situations that happened years ago I was able to remember and write them down. Specifically for the behavioral questions. At first it was hard and I thought to myself “I work retail!! How the heck am I supposed to talk about a time I went above and beyond..?” To my surprise, I was actually able to remember something. :) I have a panel interview I’ve been looking forward to and preparing for tomorrow at 2:30. I hope I nail it!

Great video. I have always thought most interviews shouldn't be stressful, fast-response situations. It doesn't model real life. Unless you're a salesman or an emergency room doctor, etc. Whereas a programmer will likely have an even better answer tomorrow.

I just went through a panel interview today for a role within my company. I had previously worked with 3/4 of the panel members. It felt tense indeed, even though I had thoroughly prepared. I think my answers to their specific questions were specific and convincing enough but it felt as if they hadn't prepared for the interview. Another think I didn't like about interviewing for an internal role was the fact that I felt like carrying a very heavy backpack, namely my past experiences (failures and successes from my time in the company).

Pro tip: write out an interview script of the questions you hear the most. I suggest looking up generic STAR questions on google as well and script those too. Even if you dont have the script in front of you, you will still remember how to answer most of them. It keeps you from fumbling around trying to think of answers on the spot.

There was a time I applied for Southwest Airlines as a flight attendant. I did not realize it was going to be a panel interview. There were four or five people on a stage and about 20 to 30 of us interviewing for the position. I told them how much I love flying, I told them how I use to stand in my room and use their spiel on seat belts, masks, exits and lighting on the floor, but at one point I looked around the room at those applying instead of staying focused on the panel and I think that is what made me lose the interview. I knew I was right for the job, but my focus was not on the panel.
