Also imo The Banana Splits Movie (2019) is underrated af when it comes to the "murderous animatronics rampage" subgenre. Again, definitely not one to be taken seriously and doesn't completely live up to its potential for pure, unadulterated chaos (they try too hard to craft a narrative, whereas in WW the narrative- rightly- plays second fiddle to the insanity), but it had some very solid kills, relatable characters and a few real laugh-out-loud moments.

You can tell Josh Hutcherson was grasping at straws and the dream sequences could have actually been really cool but it was literally him yelling at kids for answers and them running until the last one where they asked for Abby. I was also really disappointed that in all actuality. MIKE NEVER DID HIS JOB😂! He never looked at cameras so we never got a cool “Hey that guy wasn’t there before” moment because he was ALWAYS ASLEEP! Legit got to the point where it was like why are you tired? You sleep at work and at home. I feel like they could have made Vanessa’s character way more interesting if they had her take on the role of phone guy where she checks in on Mike every night. That way she could spoon feed him bits of info as he investigates the mysterious happenings of the pizzeria rather than he goin “His name is William Afton🫣” and then after learning that she’s betrayed him she mysteriously disappears. Mike doesn’t get his nightly phone call and Spring trap appears. Later we find out that earlier in the day Vanessa left a voice message. BAM WAY MORE INTERESTING AND YOU DONT HAVE TO KILL HER ON SCREEN SO THE KIDDOS CAN STILL ENJOYS AND FNAF FANS GET AN OH SHIT MOMENT! Ramping up in creepiness and having Josh uncover clues the way that a player in fnaf 1 might; Finding newspaper clippings, strange stains in a room without a camera. Could even keep the whole bit with Afton disguised as a career counsellor and forcing Josh to work at the restaurant as a way to get him to die to the animatronics in yet another cover-up. The actual problem is it's probably the most "only for the fans" movie I've ever seen. The story is like an alternate universe or a remake of the franchise from the start knowing the entire story from the beginning coming from a franchise that made things up each installment. It's something you would appreciate only if you were a fan with extensive knowledge of the series cause it makes changes for the better. It's a mystery that explains practically nothing because the supposed target audience knows it all already. But it also doesn't delve deep into any backstory, all new information from the movie is just "changed" information from the games. Plus having it geared more towards kids definitely hampered any horror elements or vague grim mystery that the movie could of had. I appreciate what it was trying to do but not only is it impossible to appease a fan base that likes actual horror and/or the animatronics portrayed in a "cutesy" way with their own personalities, but there's practically nothing for the general audience to actual like. I think something like the Mario movie played it safe and is more of a cash grab, but is also like, you know, an "actual movie," where as FNAF really swung for the fences with, "this is for the fans." I mean, if you don't give a shit about the story of FNAF sure go watch Weasels or Bananas for "killer animatronics." But Im sure their still some fan made created content for FNAF that is leagues better than all 3.

The games work because so much of them is environmental storytelling. It's newspaper clippings on the wall, or a picture subtly changing, or clicking on a specific part of the map to activate a mini game that you have to beat a specific way to get a specific cutscene. That's a lot harder to do in a movie, but you can still make it a more traditional mystery and have some clue gathering and analysis. Ain't that what most ghost stories are? Detective stories, but with this supernatural threat that will kill you if you don't solve the mystery?

As a person who love fnaf growing up, I’d say the beginning was really strong, the middle was really boring, and the end was also really strong. I *really* strongly believe it should have been R rated, the spring locks were really cartoonishly dangerous to the point of thinking “how was this ever green lit by this company?” And Vanessa’s inclusion was so weird, I didn’t like how she conveniently knew everything, it made sense in the end but it didn’t make the middle of the movie any fun.

I feel like almost every con about the movie could’ve been avoided or fixed if it was rated R, but I get that the game’s target audience became 9-13 year olds so the movie couldn’t really stray too far from that (most likely in fear of not making any money). I kinda feel the opposite. I feel like it should have leaned into being scary, or being a cutesy ghost story about animatronics possessed by kids. The problem is that it didn't go far enough into the kid-friendly direction, or the horror direction. It didn't commit to anything, so it feels disappointing no matter how you think of it. I watched Sean and Ethan’s podcast (Jacksepticeye and Crankgameplays) and the most egregious thing they point out in their review, which is very similar to Hunter’s here, is that Mike *NEVER DOES HIS JOB!* It makes no sense, he never checks cams, the power doesnt go out, the animatronics dont even come after him, nothing! It’s even crazier to watch knowing now there’s a deleted scene where Mike, while working the nightshift, uncovers news reports from the 80s about the murders at the Pizzeria, what was the purpose in removing that? It’s like Scott Cawthon wanted the most fanservicey film possible, without really understanding what made people fans of his franchise in the first place. That and Scott is simply not a good writer, and gimmicky video game easter egg storytelling doesn’t always translate well to a movie script

I think for the first half of the movie, if the animatronics moved like the crying Angels (I think that's what they're called) from Dr. Who, it would've introduced the missing element of horror the film lacked. Mike is watching the stage, the camera goes out for a second, cuts back to the stage and one of them is gone... then the camera cuts out, another one has moved. We don't see them physically move, but we know they're coming. Now it's hide and seak with 7ft tall killer robots. That's the general atmosphere everyone expected at least before the real plot kicks in. You know, something akin to, say, THE GAME! A normal average viewer wouldn't really get the movie overall, plus this was for the fans. Figured that was obvious but just in case. There's plenty in this movie and gore was never a core aspect to the franchise. If you're looking for gore and hardcore horror you should probably go back and watch Jeepers creepers, Jason ,Freddy etc. Those are actual horror and gore based films. That's honestly the biggest misconception and truly shows who isn't aware of the franchise and who is.

I'm definitely going through my "rose tinted glasses" look on the movie still bc of the hype I had + my love/bias for the franchise, but I absolutely agree with everything you've said in this video. Really well done and put everything into words for me! I really wish they hadn't gone the safe route, but actually made it accurate to the games and not bring in pointless characters and their issues we don't care about. I'm happy we got a movie in general, just sad to see the complete product be so painfully dull and not scary at all- the puppets/ animatronics were definitely the highlight of the movie, they were perfect! Also the Living Tombstone's song at the end was so cool to see, but other than those two things- it was a let down, I enjoyed it but the hype will die down for me I'm sure.

Considering that there’s two more FNAF movies on the way, I really hope they lean further into the horror aspect now that our inner child has been healed. FNAF 2 and 3 have so much more to work with. The 2nd game has 15 animatronics, and the 3rd game literally takes place in a haunted house with William Afton being a walking corpse.

I just wish the movie made me feel the same way i did when i watched the first trailer for Fnaf in 2014, looking through cameras and seeing darkness almost engulf everything with screen static, the animatronics appearing out of nowhere standing completely still staring into your soul, the unsettling noises and sound design, especially the music. They missed it all.

I disagree with this. Scott loves the lore he built with his games and that’s what mattered to him. And as someone who loves the lore and Easter eggs of fnaf I genuinely think that’s what makes it so different from other random cheap horror games and I’m glad that’s what he decided to highlight instead of making a bunch of cheap jump scares with clunky animatronics

I think some parts I can excuse like the dream sequences and the "hangout scene." Considering that the plot the franchise is literally 5 kids who got murdered ends up possessing the animatronics their corpses were stuck in, I'm fine with the more supernatural elements in the film. And while you can say that the hangout scene took the fear out of the movie, I argue that was the point. Yeah, the animatronics are deadly killing machines, but they are still just kids. Abby is probably the only time these spirits found some their age to relate to since God knows how long. Now the things involving Springtrap, I can't really defend. It all feels pretty rushed and kinda dumb. Especially how the drawing effected the spirits' memories. No amount of lore in either the games or books can convince me that isn't pure nonsense.
@Vesmir789 Жыл бұрын
I didn't like the hangout scene cuz... we already know they're ghost children in the robots lol, I didn't need a scene to remind me that they're children. We didn't need a scene to make them relatable or sympathetic. As an audience we sorta acknowledge the tragedy and innocence of murdered children by default. The hangout scene didn't make me feel good or make me feel any more kindly toward the ghost children, all it did was annihilate any tension that had been built up until that point and make the animatronics less threatening. It didn't add anything at all to the movie imo, because we are constantly reminded in every dream sequence and exposition scene that these are children. Take out that scene and nothing changes.
@asuumi Жыл бұрын
Pretty sure the whole drawing thing was explained way early in the movie by the teacher when she’s talking to josh hutcherson pretty weak connection to the climax of the film but it was there
@CleanUpNick Жыл бұрын
about springtrap, yeah it was rushed to high hell, that was my main issue with it but the drawing... that IS part of the lore, the idea is that as ghost children they are easily manipulated and they don't really remember what happened so since the drawings depict him as a friend they believe it, but then when Abby, somebody they connect with and relate to draws what really happened they remember, though i WILL say the books did it better where it was just that they couldn't remember and the character in the dream sequence helped them put together a torn up drawing like a puzzle

The first fnaf game came out when I and all my friends were in middle school, I was 13 at the time. We all went to see the movie it in theaters a few days ago and it was genuinely the most fun I've had in such a long time watching a movie. It's absolutely a movie meant for the fans of the series more than anything. Seeing characters we all loved and talked about ad nauseum for months, even years as kids come to life on the big screen?? It was not only surreal and exciting, but such an amazing nostalgia trip. I almost cried a few times during certain scenes, like when they were building the fort out of chairs and tables, or when Abby gave Bonnie that drawing of a heart. I was reminded of the love I had for these characters over such a long period of time. That all being said, I can still recognize that a lot was still left to be desired in terms of plot continuity and overall story. It doesn't help that a lot of the lore was changed to fit the script, but as a long time fnaf fan it also doesn't surprise me, what with fnaf lore at it's core being extremely hard to follow and often partially retconned with each new game. Despite its many flaws, I can't help but give in to bias and say that it's the best movie I've seen in a long time. Not because it's good or a technical masterpiece, but because I had fun watching it as a very long time fan. Also side note, I love that during the final...Fight? Between Afton in the springtrap suit and Mike, he pulls out a knife and does the Ghostface thing where he wipes it with the other hand, that was a cool nod to his character in Scream. We all got a kick out of that in the theater lol

I never would have wanted to see this movie until I learned the Henson Creature Shop was involved, I’m not a FNAF fan but I can appreciate great puppetry and practical effects to which they nailed it. I was shocked at how much blood there was in a PG-13 film and my main complaint is that it should’ve been bloodier. I typically scoff at and ignore PG-13 horror films, but this is such a unique novelty I couldn’t ignore. I hope for the planned trilogy it’s becoming they can make it R-Rated. For a franchise revolving around children being kidnapped and murdered and corpses being stuffed into robots they absolutely need to lean into more violence. I just wanted to see more puppet murders lol. They clearly have the budget and talent for it so hopefully they can up the stakes more next time
