I visited Kyoto for 5 days in 2010 and had a lovely time. I saw the Geishas trying to go about their business, groups of tourists getting photos of the back of their heads as they hurried away. I had been advised not to bother them, so I didn't. I didn't speak any japanese, but I learnt enough to buy stuff etc (I was alone) and I also learned how to say "Excuse me do you mind if I take a picture?". So when I was waiting to cross the road, and a Geisha stopped beside me to do same, I was prepared. "Hello", I said, "You look great, do you mind if I take a photo?", I said. " Of course you can" she replied, and she struck a modest pose and I got a picture that I still admire to this day. "Thank you very much" I said, she smiled and nodded politely and we both went on our way. It's not hard to be nice, people.

@escandolosoamargoАй бұрын
@@michaelsneddon4300 Well I highly recommend it, I had a really nice time in Koshi, Kyoto and Osaka, didn't go to Tokyo. :-) I don't know but I feel it might be better to go alone, learn a little Japanese (nobody expects you to speak Japanese, but a little goes a long way), and be polite and respectful. Avoiding tourist restaurants and bars and sticking to quieter venues is good too. Nobody has a problem with the nice foreigner in the corner, and people feel more comfortable approaching you :-) The language is of course a problem, but I learned what to say in a shop, literally "Hello, I would like (this) please. Thank you. Goodbye" which also works in restaurants combined with pointing! And "I would like to go to (here) for taxis and train tickets, and like I said, "Do you mind if I take a photo please". That kind of thing. A conversation with a Geisha is maybe not going to happen though, unless you go to a Geisha house where they speak English don't get your hopes up.

These aren't tourists. A tourist takes pictures, asks questions and gets lost easily. Tourists are compliment that people from other cultures and societies are so interested in yours that they spent months saving money, planning time away from work/school and making arrangments for house/pet sitters. This isn't tourism. Make a fitting term for it if you like but don't call them tourists.

Sorry but that's the way it is. The definition of tourist is someone who travels to another country for a temporary stay for their own interests. There's good tourists and bad tourists, not hard to understand lol
@clutch11414 күн бұрын
@NeutralGuyDoubleZero Tourism is tourism. It isn't a business trip, a layover, or a venture of criminal activity , or being a deliberate nuisance to profit for the approval of others. The word "tourist" is derivative of "tour" which means to travel for enjoyment and/or immersion of nature/culture. So, no, "tourism" does not mean a temporary stay for your own interests. @clutch11413 күн бұрын
@NeutralGuyDoubleZero You almost had a thought there, but in your careless abandon to be right, you forgot the simple question of why people have always traveled for pleasure in the first place. Few years ago someone threw bottles of soda spiked with narcotics into his cage, leading to him going into psychosis (not as interesting as it sounds). Papameat, here are some tips before you go: Don't stab your food with chopsticks, Don't talk loudly on public transit, Don't walk and eat at the same time (finding trashcans is next to impossible FYI), have your exact change ready when leaving busses or they will get pissed off, ask someone before taking a photo, Good luck finding an exit at Shinjuku station.

Expanding a bit on the Thai shrimp buffets, there was a similar case where Pizza Huts in China had to remove all salad bars. Basically, the patrons exploited the 'one bowl' rule and often made MASSIVE vegetable towers. I live in Austria and while the tourism is already bad enough in Vienna and Salzburg, Hallstatt is by far the worst... People go there for the windows screensaver view, but tend to forget that actual people still live there, so they step on their balconies, roofs and terraces to get the perfect pictures. A relative of mine lived there and once she forgot to lock her door when she went grocery shopping and when she came back people were inside her house. No matter what your feelings are, accredited zoos are vital for conservation efforts. Hunter isn’t wrong about zoo goers though omg
@kingcockroach.Ай бұрын
I always am shocked by the hate on zoos maybe because my local zoos are actually very good and have saved a number of species and aim to breed and protect animals. Being a zoo is just to cover costs. Not all zoos are bad, some zoos are great and can save animals from extinction
@attabooiiАй бұрын
@@kingcockroach.yeah it's mostly stemming from people not knowing the difference between roadside zoos and accredited zoos. Obviously and ideally, these animals will get to live in their native habitats. But that just isn't an option anymore for many animals. Like even Moo Deng, pygmy hippos are critically endangered! And very few zoos have breeding programs for them!
@Silvermoon424Ай бұрын
@@kingcockroach. Unfortunately I think some people are just ignorant of the importance and function of accredited zoos. A lot of unaccredited zoos are genuinely horrible for animals, so I definitely understand why a lot of people who have only ever seen those types of zoos oppose the concept of zoos in general.
@artlove9577Ай бұрын
I try to express this to people all the time. Majority of people tend to not care about things that they've never interacted with, or know very little about. A person is way more likely to defend dolphins and whales being in tiny tanks, as opposed to a deer in another country that they've only heard of occasionally. And that's because they have seen dolphins and whales so much, either in person or through media, that they have developed an attachment to that animal and don't want to see it go. There are so many things for people to care about, it's hard to even think about something that's not right in front of you. A lot of these attachments happen during childhood too, I know I personally have been obsessed with Orca's since I was a child, and that was all because I saw free willy and then later got to see a pod in person. The education and experience brought on by zoos is HUGE for conservation. I think the most important part is choosing the right zoos to support. As I have seen others say, you can usually tell by the enclosures and health of the animals alone. Most accredited zoos keep visitors as hidden from the animals as possible, whether that be one way glass, sound proofing, or foliage cover. The only animals they have interact with guests, are ambassador animals that show no signs of stress or aggression being around people. And even then they put a lot of effort in place to protect them from uncaring visitors.
@sadiesnailАй бұрын
@@artlove9577 Yes! Exposure is the word you are looking for, and it is extremely important for conservation. even though it's not related to zoos, a good example is the way people view snakes now. When I was a child, everyone I talked to hated snakes. My parents refused to ever let me have one, and said they would never visit if I got one. They would kill any snake that showed up in our area, venomous or not. Skip ahead 15 years, and I am always shocked about how excited people get when I say I keep them. I fully believe a huge part of that is how much people share videos and pictures of their snakes online. Snakes with Hats was huge for making people switch from seeing them as scary, to cute noodles with little cat faces. And from there, it's spread to all sorts of species and has even led to people pushing to protect their native species. Which is a big win for venomous snakes, since traditionally they have only been viewed as a threat to kill, even if you are out in the woods away from them. People need to be exposed to them in order to care, and that goes for way more than just wildlife.

Once security got her down, she was shouted insults, bottles of water were thrown at her, and people were calling for her to be thrown to jail. Both her and her companion were handed over to the authorities. She was fined around $5000 pesos; the punchline, she was a Mexican, visiting from another state. I volunteer at the grand canyon over the summers. The training we receive has us make sure we are constantly aware of tourists potentially damaging the area. An older volunteer told me the most likely to offend are people from other countries and rich urban tourists. They are also the most likely to not bring enough water, litter, and be disrespectful to staff.

Pictures seem to be the root cause to most of these issues. Gotta show off to people on your social media, who will just glance at your picture for a few seconds and move on with their life. And end up destroying a living being, or something older than your great grandmother in the process

I remember reading an article once about how the Galapagos Islands were in danger because of climate change and too much tourism. The main point of the article was that because the islands were going to be gone sometime in the future MORE tourists were flocking to the islands to see things before they were gone...increasing the destruction to the islands.

Bruh in Switzerland Chinese tourists are rude af. I was looking at a bracelet display and this Chinese lady rushed over and tried to cover it to stop me from buying anything(i didnt want to buy anyway). We tried to take a nice photo at a water fall and a group came over and tried to shoo us away because we took 0.000002 too long and they wanted pictures. They'd get made at staff for not knowing their language and just try and take over anything so only they could access it

When my family and I visited moscow before the pandemic and stood in line for Lenin's mausoleum, there was a whole chinese tourist group who tried constantly to skip the line by pushing around or walk past. Contrary to some others who would give in, my dad held them in check and just kept on pushing them back and they screamed and complained as if they had the right to do so the whole time.

My partner was in Iceland looking at a beautiful pristine waterfall and surrounding environment. There were signs all around saying not to cross the little chain fence because the mosses were hundreds of years old and extremely delicate.. but some tourists chose to ignore that all and hop over so they could get a better photo of the waterfall. Just the most thoughtless, entitled c*nts around.

Don't go to cat cafe's, it's not pleasant at all and some are pretty dirty. Some cats seem to be just straight up tired of people and you can tell they're not happy.

@xduwu4257Ай бұрын
Depends on where you go. There's a cat cafe not too far from me, they've only been open a few years and adopted out thousands of cats. There's another one in the city that's apparently pretty shit, so I haven't been. The cats aren't for adoption and they don't control the amount of people coming into the cafe so it can get very busy and overwhelming for the cats.
@mixieveeАй бұрын
Depends on the cat cafe. I went to one where the owners took great care of the cats. Everything was clean. The place was huge, which gave the cats space. Plus there were rooms that only staff/cats could access, when the cat wanted to stay away (which some cats did). Plus the cat cafe helped hundreds of cats get adopted from the shelters.
