By far the worst Paper Mario game. You can get through that entire game by avoiding every enemy aside from the boss. Plus it feels incredibly half-assed. The animations suffer from "saving space" where most of them boil down to two or three frames being repeated. The story's contrive and uninspired. The first three had different villains, then they realized they scraped the last of their creativity from the bottom of a barrel and went back to Bowser. Not to mention the lack of partners kills me

I have to agree that Sticker Star is super depressing. Even more so with a pedigree consisting of what I consider to be two of the greatest games ever created by mortal hands. It's just so far from even a glimpse of the magnificence of its predecessors, so underdeveloped comparatively. It's not bad, just so much worse. Yet again, it seems cruel to hold any game in this current industry to the *heights* of Paper Mario: TTYD's Murder of the Orient Express parody. Or Glitzburg. Or the Super Paper Mario's Samurai level, or the Space one, or UnderWhere and OverThere. The level design from either of those games are leaps and bounds ahead of almost everything we play today.

The Thousand Year Door is easily my favorite game of all time. So this game looks disappointing, to say the least. On that note, I think a review of Paper Mario TTYD would be really fun to watch.

Three things, TTYD was the BEST, it needs a review (as it has been mentioned by yahtzee many times, and I bought sticker star and never finished it. The main reason was how much it took a dump on the series quality wise, but also the puzzles. Example: you need to cross a huge snow bank. Ok easy, radiator it gives of heat. Nope. Toaster? Uh uh. Ok fan because it will blow away the snow. Nah. Its a lightbulb. You know, because lightbulbs are known for their high temperatures. But yeah, thousand year door was and still is my favorite game.

I just realized something, too. Miyamoto chastised the former version of SS for being too much like TTYD, but in reality, SS was a lot like PM64. Let's go down the list. - Some sort of celebration for something - Bowser crashes the party and causes chaos - Bowser snatches a powerful, wish-granting item and uses it for himself - Bowser gives wish-granting power to his top minions - Grassland, Desert, Forest, Jungle, Ice World, Fire World, Boss SS is basically a much weaker PM64.

I'm rewatching this after the announcement of paper Mario for the Nintendo Switch.. I Hope so much that paper Mario goes back to its roots a bit and is that awesome turn based rpg. When I heard that there was a Paper Mario coming out on the Wii, I was pretty ecstatic. When I found out it had no battle system (Paper Mario being one of the only turn-based combat systems I have enjoyed in ages) I was pretty bummed and skipped it. When I heard they were bringing BACK turn based combat for the next paper mario, I was excited again. When I hear it was sticker-based and had no XP, and involved no partners, I thought "Well what the fuck is the point of THAT then?"

***** Compared to Sticker Star Super Paper Mario is a friggin' masterpiece. Sure, it doesn't have turn based combat but it was never meant to. It was first designed with the 2D-3D switching in mind and since the 2D Paper characters of Paper Mario fit so well with the game idea they made it into a Paper Mario game. It's a spin-off. A spin-off of a spin-off. :P

ShyGuyXXL Still, I think it's perfectly possible to have TBC in a side-scrolling game. It did kinda happen with M&L: BIS... but the actual fights were 3D, so... pbbbt. So, I guess the Paper Mario series is like a Totem Pole... 1. PM64 on the bottom as the foundation. 2. SPM in the middle as a support, and a damn strong one. 3. TTYD as the crown, the pinnacle of the series thus far. 4. And Sticker Star, a mutated wart on the base that says "YOP-YOP" to passersby, ruining the structures reputation.

The Paper Mario series was absolutely derailed. It made me pretty upset. I don't think there is any hope that we're going to get what we want back, but prove me wrong if there is. Paper Mario was truly fantastic, TTYD was even better, Super Paper Mario had some different gameplay, one of the most noticeable changes was that the turned-based combat system was completely removed. It was alright, and still accepted by fans, but as soon as Sticker Star was released, the entire series had crashed down and has since then been practically left for dead.

***** I actually didn't accept Super Paper Mario for many years. Absolutely hated it when it was released. I now value it for it's good story, but still consider the core gameplay to be boring and unfun, a good game to watch a let's play of, not so good to actually play yourself IMO. Paper Mario 64 is my favorite game of all time, the characters, settings, and gameplay is pretty much perfect IMO. TTYD is also amazing in it's own right, though it lacked some of the charm of the original game and the early levels are less interesting. Sticker Star is a monstrosity that absolutely has no reason to exist.

SPM is such a misunderstood game. The story is more important than the gameplay, and even then the gameplay is still clever and interesting, despite not being difficult necessarily(except the pit of 100 trials holy shit). A shit ton of effort was out into every aspect of it, and it's still criminally underrated by fans all because of the gameplay switch, when in reality it's on par with TTYD and even surpasses it at times. It really is just a solid game trilogy. Yes, a trilogy. There are no Paper Mario games after SPM

Something else I don't like about this game: Remember how the other PM games took place in a world where most things happened to look like paper, but no one really brought it up because it was simply a characteristic of the setting? Sticker Star will NOT SHUT UP about it. You have toads afraid of being "folded", "crumpled" or "torn", coins made out of corrugated cardboard, paper puns everywhere, and the fact that paper things are flat is abused left and right. Just something that bothered me.

The idea of finding weapons is cool but it took SO much planning, the bosses were BS difficult and the puzzles were just effing stupid because you have to backtrack so much to find that ONE item to finish the puzzles. All the paper mario games were easy and relaxing but it took to much time and effort to do ONE thing

I can safely say that Paper Mario 2 is my favorite game ever. It had fantastic game feel, it was polished, solid, the environments were fantastic and immersive. Ever single little person on the street had a story and a personality. The music was fantastic and catchy and conveyed the mood of the area perfectly. It did what very few games could have even hoped to achieve, it had soul. I could go on and on about it.

This is the first time I agree with him. This was a fun game, but it was nothing like paper mario and the thousand year door, there was so much less to do. After you beat the game there's nothing left to do but fill up the museum and one boss fight was basically impossible to complete without the baseball bat sticker.

I was really excited for this game, but after actually playing it, it is the worst Mario game I've ever played. Sadly, the game was going to go back to the N64/GC battle system with new characters, themes, and storyline, but Miyamoto ordered that the game only use pre-existing characters, same Mario level themes, and barely any focus on story. Miyamoto's a genius, but it even geniuses can make absolutely terrible decisions.

Actually, this game was the sole reason I GOT a 3DS at all! However, thanks to the uncalled-for meddling of one Shigeru Miyamoto, all the creative soul was sucked out of the original drafts until it devolved into... ugh... THIS.

Paper Mario: Sticker Star truly was a disappointment, I can't even be bothered to complete it. You have to find treasure chests to go any fucking where and I struggled to even find one. Mario didn't do so well in 2012 in my eyes as that was also the year of the Non-new New Super Mario Bros. 2 2013, however has been a lot better. Ok, Luigi's Mansion 2 was a little disappointing, but at least it was fun AND COMPLETEABLE without becoming so boring you want to blow your bloody brains out. But honestly, my point is, if he liked the game would you change your mind? Probably not. If he hated the game, do you think the praise for it would go away? Again, most likely not. If you don't like the game, great, your entitled to your opinion. But your post just seems a little vehement for something that's just your opinion.

NickersonGeneral My vehemence mostly came from the fact that I found it offensive that a game with such minimal gameplay and interactive elements was so highly praised and considered for game of the year and even among some people the best game EVER MADE. What does that say about the reviewers that they consider the best game they've seen to be the game with almost no interactive elements in it? It undermines the entire concept of what makes a game good. To me, whenever I hear this game praised as one of the best games (not a good game, mind you, that I don't mind so much, just when it's praised as one of the greatest games of that year or EVER), it strikes me as the game review equivalent of "the only good X is a dead X." What's more, it undermines the validity of games BEING art rather than CONTAINING art when a story that could almost just as easily have been told in a different medium is championed as the pinnacle of video game storytelling.

SuperZez That's cool dude. STILL YOUR OPINION. No need to be offended by people having different standards than you Yahtzee named Silent Hill 2 one of his favorite games of all time, even though he admits the gameplay was clunking and frustrating and the reasons he loves it is merely because of the story and characters. What he finds appealing about it is that the mere fact it's a video game makes the story a million times more immersive than a movie or a book could do it. I haven't played Gone Home, don't know anything about it, but based on your description, it sounds like the appeal is it's a well written story made more immersive by having you control the characters. This is why games like Heavy Rain, Indigo Prophecy, and 90s point and click adventure games succeeded despite plenty of other people like you who say "games are ONLY about the gameplay. stories can go bite me". If that's not your thing, that's fine. There are plenty of games out there with no story or a completely skippable story. Why do you care if there are people who disagree with your opinion? You don't need to play the games. No one's asking you to conform to their opinions, so why should they all conform to yours?
