Coolant leaking at the water pump of this 2.4 liter world class engine. The vehicle is a 2013 Dodge Avenger but the same engine is used in many other models as well. So fundamentally the process is the same on others as well. This video will show you how to access the water pump and help you bleed the air out as well. We start with gaining access to the front of the engine by removing the splash shield and then move on to the serpentine belt. From there the video series continues and guides you the rest of the way in completing the repair.

Hi Dave. I have a 2013 dodge journey(2.4l engine). Found coolant dripping onto the drive overnight. I pushed white paper towel under Thermostat Housing / Water Outlet on the right side of engine. It was soaked in coolant in the morning. Have you done a video on removing this part? Do they normally need replacing or can I reinstall with HI Temp silicone sealer.

My avenger had coolant mixed with the oil can this be caused by the water pump ? Or does that only apply to internal water pumps ? I think it could also be a head gasket

In the beginning we had a few making an odd noise....much like a "beeping sound. Otherwise I have never replaced one for leaking that I know of and nothing in the last 3 or more years.

Thank You, David, for your step by step video's ... love em. We have a 2010 2.4l world class engine, (Sebring) but the maintenance schedule does not say to ever replace the timing chain? (or at least I can't see it). Is this part a maintenance free item and only needs to be replaced when it's noisy or broken? ( I have to change my honda timing Belt every 100,000kms

Chrysler never gives and interval for timing chains...they arent normal maintenance items. Now if it had a belt like many engines older then yours then yes there are intervals....such as the 3.5......the 4.0.....and older 2.4 engine that came in the PT cruiser. Nope....on this vehicle the waterpump isnt behind the timing cover like on some vehicles. There is no where that the waterpump comes into contact with oil. The antifreeze would have to be getting into the oil somewhere else. Thanks for asking and make sure to subscribe.

How can you tell the water pump is bad on these cars ? my wife driving the other day and said the temperature went up .but not over heat it it went back down and did not go back up any thoughts??

Only issue I have seen on these is the waterpump leaking. Otherwise I would check for leaks and the fan operation. Might want to have the radiator checked to make sure its not getting clogged or restricted.

Cylinder head closest to the radiator.....towards the bottom and towards the rear close to the trans but still mounted on the head.

The 2.7 is completely different. The waterpump is inside the engine cover and ran by the timing chain. Not an easy repair. Thanks for asking and make sure to subscribe.

What would cause this motor to start overheating, motor has plenty of coolant and the engine fans are spinning, this leads me to believe the thermostat may be failing, is this a common thing to fail on a car with 42k on it?!

This is not a common issue. For the most part....thermostats dont cause an overheat these days. They can set codes but as far as overheating....not really. But nothing is perfect so that is always that rare case where it might be a cause. If the fans work in all speeds and there are no coolant leaks.....items such as the radiator not being clogged need to be checked. Also its such as radiator cap testing. If it ran tooo hot it could have damaged the engine and then another test such as a cylinder leak down or block test need to be done to make sure no engine damage.

Yo brother. Quick question for you. My wife's 2015 (original owner w/ 20k miles) Dodge avenger has some brown/red sludge (peanut butter like) that has accumulated on the roof of the radiator overfill and cap. Fluid level was also noticeably low (which is how I noticed the problem in the first place). There are no noticeable symptoms during regular driving or cranking. No visible leaks or smells either. I read some blogs about similar symptoms and hear this COULD be caused by the "internal" water pump leaking, or mixing in, other fluids. I can't imagine there is already rust forming on a 2 year old coolant system so that can't be it... Other than regular oil changes, there has been no other fluid drains, flushes, or fills--so there isn't any "bad mixes" foaming up. Have you seen or heard anything of this issue? We are bringing it to the dealer tomorrow and I imagine that I'll get the runaround ago any thoughts or ideas would be helpful. Thanks.

I know that on the ones a but older then yours that they can have some coolant sludge build up. The first place its found is in the coolant bottle. The sludgy build up settles to the bottom of the bottle and can be seen easily. There were some cases with Chrysler where depending on the specific issue.....we flushed the coolant system. Pulling up your year doesnt show anything. Some slight build up on the cap is normal from what I have seen.....I would keep an eye on the coolant in the bottle and see if anything settles to the bottom over time. There are 2 engine options shown for your vehicle and none are designed to come in contact with any other fluids. The 2.4 has an external water pump that bolts to the side of the block and the 3.6 has one that bolts to the front outside of the engine. Neither are internal so mixing with anything else will not happen (caused by a leaking water pump)

I have a 2012 dodge avenger 2.4 se, I take very good care of this car change oil and air filter every 5000 miles. I've been having problems with it having absolutly no power. Sometimes it opens up and runs like a puppy. But othertimes it feels like the car is stuck in sluge. I cleans the mass air flow and other sensors in the air cleaner housing. Seems to have worked a tiny bit. But the car only has 80 thousand miles. Feels like it has over a million miles on it sometimes. Any suggestions?

Car sounds very groggy like there is something plugging it up and making it so sluggish. Never had any actual engine problems other than this.

Evening Clint. Its hard to say without driving it and checking different items in person. There is nothing that comes to mind at the moment and nothing common that I have seen. When there are no codes or check engine light....it makes it very hard to narrow the search. It becomes a diag by symptoms alone. Wish there was something I could say to check but nothing thats specific to what you described.

Yeah. Next im Going to replace fuel filter, clean injectors and valves. See if that helps. Only other thing I know is increase airflow and delete the huge resonator in the back. Rely hoping I don't have to do any Piston work.. rings sieves ect...

One other question. When I lift the plastic cover/noise cover off the top of the engine. Is it normal to hear all the valves and lifters...i feel they are very loud. My oil was done today and it is deff full. I've never heard all that nois out of the top end b4.

There is no fuel filter to replace on this vehicle.....the pump has a strainer that serves this purpose and its not replaceable.
