After a weekend at the track, we have seen some charging problems on our Yamaha YFZ450R. Today, we’re going to go through the electrical system on our Yamaha ATV and see if we can identify the problem. We’ll check the battery to make sure it’s good first, then we’ll dive in and check out the charging system on the YFZ. We’ll test the stator first, and then we’ll move to the regulator rectifier to see if we can identify the problem. Once we determine that the problem is with the regulator rectifier, John will show you how to easily change out the unit.

My Kodiak not charging and the stator dynamic output is in the 30-33 V AC range. Bike idles for ten minutes and battery drops from 14 to 12 V DC, and then down and down. I'll swap out the rectifier and pray it's not a short somewhere in the harness. I know the rectifier gets VERY hot so I can see how it might be prone to failure. Thanks for the helpful video John.

My bradda thank u for all these videos. I get one problem that really need help with if possible. I changed the stator changed the complete harness and starter relay now I have no Neural light and no power to harness idk what I could to please help

Thank you so much for this video, it helped me diagnose the problem on my XT660X with the regulator/rectifier. Funny thing that I noticed; the faulty part tested OK with the diode test when the bike was 'cold', however after running the engine for a minute or two and re-testing the part right after, it actually tested faulty until it cooled off again.

I have a similar problem with my YFZ as well. My battery has 10 volts when I used the voltmeter which is already bad, but when my YFZ is running at idle the volts go up to 28 and as I add gas to the throttle it'll only keep going up. I’m thinking it’s the stator but I really don’t have any idea of what it is since I don’t know much about them.

Hello I have an 09 yfz450r thing was running great and all of a sudden the battery went bad switched the battery out its charging fine starts right up, But now the bike backfires and spudders and even sometimes shuts off when you accelerate any idea where to look ?

Currently working on an 04 Kodiak the starter turns over but the starter turns a long time before the motor picks up and turnsover to crank

If the starter spins before it catches the motor, check the bendix gear and the starter gear for damage

Hi john - thank you for the videos. I have an 09 yfz 450r. Having some battery troubles. Put new battery in. Voltage across leads at idle is 14.35. I also have a parasitic draw of .17 between my positive post and positive lead with the key off. I’m guessing the regulator is allowing to much juice back. I’m hoping that maybe that regulator is causing the draw also? Thank you for any help?

Check wires and cables. You can disconnect the regulator to see if there is bleed off, causing the drain.

I have a 05 yfz 450 that won’t start I have replaced the battery the starter the sylinoid and the plug for the spark plug but it still won’t start, it turns over but won’t start. Could my issue be the stator ? Or another issue please let me know your opinion thank you

Hey guys any idea why 2005 yfz 450 is not sending any power to the bike i have a new battery replaced the key switch and starter solenoid cleaned the neutral switch and still nothing i hit the key and doesn't do anything

Hello, I have a 09 YFZ450R. That idles for 15 seconds and some times 2 minutes then it dies. The battery is reading 12.36V and when is running is at 13.45V. The resistance on the startor is 0.4ohms on all 3 coils. But the voltage is around 33-34 AC volts. But some times the multimeter reads as low as 32.2 volts. It has continuity from voltage rectifier to the battery and from the voltage rectifier to the stator too. Do you guys think that my startor is failing? Thanks in advance!

Can you provide some help on a yfz450, not having a spark. Was running fine until I changed the battery. I pulled the spark plug coil and hit the start button and no spark that I can see.

I got 05 yfz 450 .it wont turn over unless jumping solenoid or wire yellow on neeutral switch then the start button works but now new Ricks stator and rectifier still no spark or button wont work without jumping yellow neutral safety relay wire I installed a new neutral relay by battery no green lights nothing even put a neutral safty switch by shifter .im stumped maybe tors or tps is all that's left I added 3 ground wires for the teck of it nothing could those 2 diodes cause this up front. I know they are bad v ffron av test well one is I don't know which is which. It has lots of compression maybe .i'll get coil also I want to delete all safeties but don't know were to start any into would be great. Also new cdi installed.

I just had this happen to my 2004 yamaha 450 yfz. Change the stater and it drove nice for awhile died again. Will have to change rectafire and stater again

When reading the plug to the stator I get off 0.65 ohms from A-B but then from B-C C-A I get 4.5 ohms. Could that mean something is wrong with the stator?

Hey guys i have a 2013 yfz450. Went for a day of riding and an hour into it, it started sputtering at mid throttle and has started running a little rough. Is this a carb and fuel issue or is there something I'm overlooking

@@Gunstv94 unfortunately not I ended up taking it to a shop and letting them deal with it. A tune up and a new airbox and intake fixed it

A DMM can only peek inside and look at the diodes on the rectifier portion of a regulator/rectifier.
