Hello Patrick, have commented on your videos in the past but that's a good while ago now so you probably don't remember me. I'm one of those you refer to as not being able to get out much anymore. Unfortunately due to arthritis I can only manage short excursions and then only if it's one of my better periods. Your videos fetch back a real mixture of bitter sweet memories. I used to really love wild camping on Kinder and Bleaklow. Trouble is I still feel the same in my head. Reality kicks in if I try and put thoughts into practice. Still you've got to make the best of things. I find your stuff a real tonic sometimes when I'm feeling a bit low. Keep up the good work.

When I woke in the morning a lot warmer and snow had almost gone, very windy, I knew my pegs were pushed into solid frozen ground that had now thawed, !uckly they held. If I had camped 5 meters in front of the tent I would of been layed in what was now a small stream, all exiting stuff. Good to keep our older viewers In touch with there past and reminding them of good times from there younger days,I might be one of them soon, all the best Pat

I was a member of the Peak District Mountain Rescue Team for a while, back in the 70s. At one particular time I was leading a group of students. We got up to Kinder plateau, but it was much too windy to keep moving with the students. Found a boundary wall that sheltered us, I cooked the food for them all, then into the sleeping bags inside bivvy bags, 3 people in each one. The bivvy bags were giant thick plastic bags, kept ius insulated ferom the ground especially using sleep mattresses. Boots were kept on all night, rather than hit the problem of frozen boots and not being able to get them back on. Damp socks removed and placed inside sleeping bags aand dry, new socks put on for overnight. Great trip back down to the flatlands and the hostel, where we had a second breakfast just like Hobbits.

@@patrickdickinson6492 I did have a similar adventure on the Brecons in the winter. Again a very, VERY, cold wind, and a shortage of issued equipment. I dished out what spare kit I had to the worst suffering students. I decided to bring them down to the valley road, and on the way down came across a group of soldiers huddling behind a wall. They were in summer uniforms, and had two ponchos between the 5 of them, so were suffering very badly. I made hots drinks for all of use and then kept going down, with the 5 soldiers sheltered in the middle of our group. When we got down to the road there was an army lorry parked there. The sergeant came storming across, shouting at me for not leaving them there. Luckily. I shouted back, "You will address me as Sergeant-Chef". (the equivalent tp a Company Sergeat Major), I had served in the French army, so knew my protocol. "My job is to save lives of recruits. What is your name and unit? And I want that right now. I will be reporting you to the Redcaps for negligence". He soon calmed down when he realised he had gone way over the rules concerning raw recruits, especially in winter and badly equipped. That was fun.

Nice video Pat. Snedge aint what it used to be! I can remember venturing up onto Bleaklow back in the eighties and it used to drift so deep you could drop into the voids up to waist level if you wandered off the track. I can well understand you giving the Rambler and Nags Head a miss as their 4WD driver friendly tap prices are truly scandalous. The arctic hares really stand out on Bleaklow now due to reduced snow covering. One spring after the winter thaw i went up there and found the skeletons of a pair of them stood up like they were boxing! I would guess they either starved or froze to death in a blizzard and huddled together in their final moments. Going up here this weekend. It actually feels even colder these days as the snow is not as dry as it used to be and is wet to the touch. It used to be loose, dry and powdery back then to the point that you needed crampons to get traction on it. Global warming is definitely a real thing as the younger generation have nothing to compare it against.

@@Voodoo_Ray I can understand this as the ground is not as cold as it used to be at this altitude. I can honestly remember it setting concrete hard like permafrost for weeks on end. It actually used to have an insulating effect in the past and was ideal for bivouacking.

@@MrDegsy69 I remember 2008/9 and 10 being decent years. If memory serves snow fell in Nov and didnt leave till April. The Greenfield road and Holme Moss were closed for weeks. We had 15 foot plus drifts. We built quinzees and snow holes on black hill and people were skiing on Bleaklow

@@Voodoo_Ray I can remember some really good winters up there in the past. It was about the only time you could actually walk up on Black Hill back then without getting stained jet black in the deep peat bogs before they laid the erosion treatment down on the P.W. It always amazes me how low passenger airliners seem to be flying above there but them you have to remember how high above sea level it actually is. I sometimes visit the wreck of the B29 super fortess 'over exposed' up on Shelf Stones. This was a payroll flight on route between RAF Scampton and Burtonwood. It ploughed into the top in low cloudbase, poor visibility conditions. This was not uncommon prior to GPS navigation as aircraft flew in 2D plots back then on altimeter and compass bearing settings. You only had to get the calculation of a strong side wind wrong and you could easily drift into the hill tops if you could not see them in zero visibility. I liken this to the aeronautical equivalent of hitting a reef. This all stopped at a certain point in time with the advent of GPS navigation. Indeed this is my prefered method of crossing Bleaklow in thick mist these days as if you stray off the path you will end up walking in wide circles!

Hi Patrick, great video - and photography - thank you - I first walked over Kinder 34 years ago aged 19 when I got it in my head I was going to do a solo PW walk - I gave up at day 5! (in mid summer). I've only been back twice since (and each time walked a bit further - but never in winter. It does definitely bring back memories, and perhaps I'll get back again one day to finish the walk!

One of your best yet! I only stumbled over one of your videos from 3 years ago around the start of January. Caught up on almost all of them, they get better and better! Love the relaxing accompanying music soundtrack on here too, i feel it really works. I should have been going up there today but for waking up with a bad back ( yes at 39 years old ) So when this one dropped in my inbox, i was still able to experience it thanks to you. Have a great day and i look forward to many more! :)

Hi Patrick, I've been watching and enjoying your videos a fair bit recently and I really like your down to earth manner. This wild camp in particular struck a chord with me and many others it would seem. Great advise, just get on with as much as you can...I think we can all relate to your philosophy in one way or another. I have never commented on a youtube video before, but having enjoyed this and your other stuff, I felt compelled to say something nice if I could and thank you, like everyone else...for all your hard work and inspiration. All the best, Paul

In the 1950s and 60s as soon as it snowed it would be announced 'Buxton is cut off and all the Pennine passes like Mam Tor, the Snake, Woodhead and Standedge are closed. Also no trains running. You just would not be able to get there. Snow would be up to a foot deep. You are exactly right in what you said. I could no longer get up there. Yes, it brigs back all those good memories.
