Don't know if you read when searching for this song, but when they went into the recording studio to record this, George Clinton told Eddie to imagine he had just found out his mother had passed. He recorded this in one take. Thank you for including Eddie in guitar week.......R.I.P. Eddie.

George also was sure to pump Eddie up with an unreal amount of blotter acid before explaining to play like "you just found out your mother died but she's still alive" too!! Haha, in fact, the entire Maggot Brain album was recorded, basically, over a week-long acid trip! I'm def not an "acid-guy" but I sure am happy that it exists and helped in birthing one of my all time favorite albums!! Eddie Hazel and Duane Allman are tied for my fav guitar player of all time and Eddie role and influence on Rock is by far the most CRIMINALLY underated

"Play like you heard your mama just died". That's the legend. Eddie Hazel was tripping and came up with this. Blew everyone away. On mixing Clinton turned everyone else down so Eddie's guitar would stand out more. There is a full band version with the other instruments more audible but they went with this mix as it's just brilliant.

I came across this song out of pure curiosity. I found a list about 7 years ago of some of the greatest guitar solos. This song blew my mind!

a decade+ ago when i started listening seriously to Funkadelic and Parliament and many of their side projects & solo endeavors -- like you i also got an intense Pink Floyd vibe. pure unfiltered psychedelia. at the same time -- i felt completely robbed by the rock radio stations who in my area were not playing Funkadelic right alongside Pink Floyd. it made me lowkey, simmering angry for a long time. all these amazing albums i could have and would have been listening to for decades, but ridiculous biases in "mainstream rock music programming" on the airwaves prevented me, and others, hearing these complimentary bands "speaking to each other" via proximity on our FM radio dial. really glad you made this video and posted it. thanks for your reaction.

One of the greatest guitar solos of all time. People slept on Eddie and his playing because he was African American. There were some great musicians in the parliament funkadelic mix!!!! I started listening when I was about 16 years old.

Slept on him because he's black ? I'm sorry but that is just not true ... Eddie was a great guitarist , he played this at just 21 years old , he was a part of a big group/band , just because he was not a "star" doesn't mean he wasn't recognized by his peers ... How come then Jimmy Hendrix was a huge star or Muddy Waters or any other great blues guitarist before ... The thing is , most people just want to be regular people , even if they can play great , not everyone seeks fame, he just did his thing and left ... Enough....

With all due respect, I would argue that it has nothing to do with race. It has something to do with what is allowed to be shown on TV. Shows like Weeds, Breaking bad, House and even Peaky blinders. When TV in all it's forms was invented, everything had to be picket fence perfect. Everyone is happy. Nobody dies, and if they do, it looks great, there is no blood and everyone is dignified. It was all lies and synthetic and fake. And all of a sudden, past 2000s, but more certainly after 2010s, the floodgates open. And the anti-hero became the hero. Now the hero is not perfect. He's not white. And here I ain't talking about skin color but side. He is not 100% good. He is human. He is both good and evil. He is gray. And in a context like that, I heard this song in an episode of the show House MD. It wasn't suppressed because a black artist performed it. It was suppressed because it's about death. And that was suppressed until one point. People were very uncomfortable to allow this stuff on TV/radio. And if you don't meet it there... I could go on, and elaborate. The reason why we HAD TO allow antiheroes on TV is because they were already there in gaming environment. When TV became in danger to loose it's place in the culture, a last ditch attempt to at least survive a bit more, was to reform itself. I wont bore you with more details, but I just want to say I'm thankful for this piece of music. I love it.

Eddie Hazel was a very talented guitarist. The story as it has already been told is true, that George Clinton told Eddie to go inside himself and play like that. Maggot Brain was a name supposedly given to him, Eddie Hazel. Mike Hampton who played with Eddie now plays the lead on that song when the band plays it. RIP Eddie Hazel. PEACE TO ALL!!!!!!!

This came up on my KZbin premium music (discover) feed and I really like it! I love Guitar and sometimes a instrumental is perfect for certain moods. I am happy to see you enjoying so many music genres. Love your STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN reactions and I especially liked your MAHALIA JACKSON reaction! It took me back to my childhood because my momma used to listen to her on the big vinyl records. We had the old record player and thank God my momma exposed us to so many types of great music!!!! Music is my LOVE AND MY THERAPY! I didn't grow up around my father but I learned he was an outstanding musician and actually played for some famous country music artist. When I did meet my father I was 33yrs old and he told me a little about his music career and gave me a framed picture of him playing the fiddle on the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville Tennessee. Just awesome to figure out why I love music so much, I found out it runs through my veins!! Thank you so very much for your reactions I really enjoy them ❤️ 💕

From Wikipedia According to legend, George Clinton, under the influence of LSD, told Eddie Hazel during the recording session to imagine he had been told his mother was dead, but then learned that it was not true. The result was the 10-minute guitar solo for which Hazel is most fondly remembered by many music critics and fans. Though several other musicians began the track playing, Clinton soon realized how powerful Hazel's solo was and faded them out so that the focus would be on Hazel's guitar. Critics have described the solo as "lengthy, mind-melting" and "an emotional apocalypse of sound."

Michael Fisher indeed the 90s CD was just a mix of odd lots, albeit very enjoyable. Game (1977?) was Eddie’s only solo LP. His guitar is inexplicably mixed DOWN and most of his solos are truncated on that record. Go figure.
