@@Pedal2Metal_on_KZbin Great video. Useful for PS replacement as well. Any luck with the crankshaft seal? Thank you for taking the time to do this video. Your content provided enough information for me to complete the job on my vehicle. While I was acquiring the tools and parts I got quotes from various shops for this job. The average for just the valve covers was $1,900. These quotes did not include injector rebuild or a serpentine belt replacement which I performed as well. This job took me a couple weeks to complete not because of the difficulty but rather trying to fit it in between life and free time. Thankfully I also had a second vehicle so I was able to take my time which I think is key in doing this job. Of course having the right tools is important but time and patience. Again thank you for sharing.

Hello, you're welcome; thanks for watching the video! Looking back I regret not doing my timing cover gasket right away when I had everything apart. My car has been leaking oil in that location since doing the valve cover gasket job... the local Volvo dealership quoted me a price of $2,600 2 yrs ago to perform that job, along with a new (rebuilt) Bosch alternator at the same time, as a "while you're in there" item, requested from me... even tho they scoffed. After hearing the quote, I said no. They inspected the car last year and passed it, this year they said they will never inspect my car again, until the leak gets fixed. So, I guess I'll be doing that job this spring along with new idler bearings (have), new belt (have), new belt tensioner (will need), new water pump (which I already purchased from FCP), and also I want to get a rebuilt Bosch alt from FCP, and do ALL this crap at once... I then feel this car will be bullet proof for another 150k miles (hopefully).
@BTW_02-19 Жыл бұрын
That blows. I thought about doing the timing cover job when I saw that FCP offered a kit for it but choose to take the gamble since I had no signs of oil coming from there. Hope your second attempt goes smoothly especially with the alternator swap. Crazy how much dealerships or some shops want to charge. The next dreaded job I have been putting off is the cabin fan replacement. The bearing squeals at any speed now. There’s a good video for that just another tear apart the car job.

Great video, well done for putting the time in and for your very honest work. Just thought to mention tho, spark plugs already have a special coating on the threads from factory, it's been this way for some time now. In fact adding antiseize to the threads gives an incorrect torque value(it will be over torqued), this can actually cause issues down the line. Other wise great info and tips, thanks!
@Pedal2Metal_on_YouTube5 жыл бұрын
My spark plugs sure did not seem to have any kind if coating that I could see or feel; that's for sure. I don't like to take a chance with spark plugs going into aluminum heads. I have an '07 XC90 V8 that I'm almost certain has a rear main seal leak. It is for sure leaking from the valve cover gaskets. With the timing cover being a common issue I'm tempted to just drop the entire front subframe and separate the engine/transmission and do all the jobs at once. That would definitely be a ton of work but this thing is too dang nice to neglect. I wouldn't try this until next Spring as I don't have enough head room in the garage. This would have to be done in the RV parking spot but I'm not sure I could actually lift the front of the vehicle high enough to slide the drivetrain out. Oh well, I guess some AT205 is the solution for now.

My valve cover gaskets are leaking in my timing cover was leaking I put some bars leak rear main seal repair in the oil and it stopped the timing cover leak. And also slowed down my valve cover leak quite a bit it doesn't do anything while it's running until I shut the car off and when it's running the oil back down to the sun it leaks out the front valve cover. P. S. That will build up as from the PCV valve and an oil catch can system would stop that from building up in the intake manifold. I have a Dodge charger that has an oil catch can on it to prevent that power robbing oil build-up.

Looking to buy another 2009 XC90 V8 RD and during a pre purchase inspection, they note a slight leak from the valve cover. They quoted $1882 for”front cover and valve cover”. One more question. When taking off the fuel rail there is a small, flat washer on top of the fuel injector. It’s grey in color and seems to be there to hold on the “red” o ring. One of those busted how important is it? Is there a fix so I don’t have to buy a new Injector? Thanks again!!

I believe those are plastic spacers. I looked (on my Instagram pg) at the very few pics I took of mine and I don't see any grey ones; mine I think were an orange color. Mine had 121k miles on it; it now has 132k. You can easily pop off the decorative engine valve covers; just grab them and pull straight off the knobs holding them on. The main issue with these cars is the alternator, power steering pump and transmission. Also, once these cars go over 100k miles the rubber engine gaskets start to leak... Due to high heat conditions and age. I'd ask for all records on the car. Other than looking for drops of oil or power steering fluid; they are pretty damn reliable from what i understand. I joined the Facebook Volvo s80 v8 owners club right away to learn more info. Good luck!

Are valve gasket failures common on these p2 v8s?
@Pedal2Metal_on_YouTube3 жыл бұрын
It's not a failure, per say; they just get very brittle due to age. The newest V8 is 2010, and the oldest is 2007. So you they are old cars now. Most need replaced if the motor has over 125,000 miles or so. It's very common and part of the regular maintenance of these motors. I still need to do my timing cover gasket, but the drip is minor.

@JFinch575 жыл бұрын
Great video! Decided to search KZbin prior to my start this afternoon. I'm ready to take off the valve covers. Bought same kit from FCP, get all parts there because of lifetime warranty How did you deal with the fuel lines on the rear bank? Noticed that you didn't separate them. Doesn't look like there's enough room to get the cover off unless the lines are unbolted and moved which isn't easy. Spent 30 minutes trying to disconnect fuel lines and I don't have whatever tool is needed. BTW, I used to own my own 7 bay shop for 20 years and have an ASE master's, but I wasn't a full time mechanic.
@Pedal2Metal_on_YouTube5 жыл бұрын
Thank you. If I remember correctly, I just moved the lines out of the way; I def don't remember disconnecting any of them. My car is still dripping oil, so I guess I should have gotten the kit that has the timing cover gasket too. Ugh

It's probably the front crankshaft seal. That leaked first in mine. Not too bad to do. I bought an OTC damper puller kit and did it through the wheel well. Can get the puller number tomorrow. Also, the power steering pumps are notorious for leaking, mine is and I have a replacement from Rock Auto. The FCP one is genuine Volvo and about $550. I called the company and they said it was made in Mexico. Guess what, arrived made in China. Oh well, will be the first Chinese part on the Volvo except for some LED bulbs. I'm not paying $550!

@@JFinch57 Yea plz let me know the puller part number when you can; I'd appreciste it!

I used an OTC Stinger 4531 Harmonic Balancer Puller/Installer set and a PBT 70960 Camshaft & Crankshaft Seal Tool Kit. My front crankshaft seal started leaking around 140K miles. At 203K started getting smoke under the hood and I'm stuck doing this job, round #2 today! My PS pump does appear to have a slight leak and I ordered one just in case so that's going in too. Hopefully my Volvo doesn't reject the Chinese transplant!!!!!
@Pedal2Metal_on_YouTube5 жыл бұрын
@@JFinch57 Thanks for the info! I too suspect that's where the drop is coming from... Its not too bad right now, but with 131k miles, I'm sure it's only gojng to get worse. Somewhere I saw a place selling rebuilt factory volvo p.s. pumps online that had good reviews; if I find it again, I'll send the link. At least those pumps are easy to get to... Unlike the alternator!

Epic video, I have a XC90 with 138,000km and I'm gonna hit this job up. This is off topic but when I got the car, there was very low power steering fluid and it startled me when the steering went stiff suddenly, I filled 500ml of correct fluid in and it's been fine since. I did degrease quite a bit of grease around the top steering pump and noticed oil on control arm, etc. Is it likely that it is leaking from the steering system or could the level have just dropped and the dealer not noticed it? I do also have a tiny drop every day of brown oil (engine oil) from what looks like the rear bank (doh! looks like I need to this job).
@Pedal2Metal_on_YouTube5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching the video. Yes, I would say you might have a leak at one of the power steering pumps hose o-rings, it sounds. I would definitely keep an eye on the leaks possible location.

Well congratulations. That time included power steering reservoir, cleaning and rebuilding the fuel injectors (with new screens and O rings), new spark plugs and repairing fuel injection wiring loom insulation. In fairness, I was filming and dealing with the camera etc... and also pulled the spark plugs, fuel injectors (to rebuild) etc. If you read the comments, some people claim 6 to 8 hours for the gasket job alone. One "superman" claimed few hours, which in my humble opinion is b.s.

I'll be honest... The V8 in my XC90 drives more like an inline 6 in a BMW. Too quiet, and too timid. All of this additional headache and maintenance just seems cruel when the payoff is a lackluster V8 experience. Really missing my 2006 X5 4.4i. The 2006 Mercedes ML500 is a much better ride with significantly fewer engine problems. Do yourself a favor. Avoid this car at all costs. Oil leaks at 100,000 miles, and too many rattles and creaks. The wood cracks. The leather is abysmal. My alternator repair alone was nearly $2,000-- at an independent shop. Volvo wanted an obscene amount for the repair. Run!

Hmmm, I've always liked the e53 and I have 2 e39s, but the m62 can have timing chain guide issues. Plus the proportions of the ml and X5 of the time always seemed a little off to me. My XC90 V8 is a perfectly proportioned tank and makes my BMW's look like the most reliable cars in the world, lol.
