There was a moment in 1990 when the fashion and music took heavy influence from the late 60s, this is the theme song of that moment. For a brief moment in the clubs, the fashionistas would dress like this and strut their stuff. This reaction was one of your best!

The 1990s were just wild. Not only was there a 1960s movement, there was also a strong swing era throwback with 1940s-style music that also helped vault some Ska bands into the Top 40 for a hot minute (The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Cherry Poppin' Daddies, etc.). I remember a GAP ad with a bunch of models swing dancing in their khakis, plus the movie Swingers was obviously from this period... So strange but so fun.

Yep you've got Q-Tip. PLUS Maceo Parker (sax), Fred Wesley (trombone) & bass player Bootsy Collins who all played together in both James Brown's band AND Parliament Funkadelic: Bootsy doesn't actually play the bass on this song he just provides guest vocals. The bass line is a sample from Herbie Hancock's song "Bring Down the Birds" originally performed by bass legend Ron Carter. Most of this song is sampled from some really obscure places (even the slide whistle).

I was there, can confirm dressing like a hip hop hippie was the vibe in 1990. Lilac Chuck Taylor's, a floral NAF NAF t-shirt, flared jeans and a bucket hat was my uniform. I blame De La Soul and the non-GMO weed. One of my favourite tunes of all time.
@LynnThompsonAuthor

I saw a comment on another reaction to this song that it marks the exact moment when the '80s turned into the '90s...and I can't think of a better description for this classic! It pulled in some retro images and fashions from the '60s-'70s era, threw in a great dance beat, some funk, rap, guest appearances, and mixed it all up...with slide whistles. If you ever watched the sitcom "How I Met Your Mother" there's a scene where Barney dances with Robin to this song at Punchy's wedding, and it's a fantastic dance scene!

Parliament-Funkadelic bassist Bootsy Collins provided guest vocals, and the rap is provided by Q-Tip of A Tribe Called Quest. When this song came out in 1990, I was young and we all danced to this at our parties! This would get people up and dancing, baby. To add some perspective, and to be perfectly honest, I didn’t know what she was saying. Actually, no one else knew , either, and no one cared, because it didn’t even matter. This was 1990, before Google came along. It’s such a lively dance and party vibe! It was years later when we figured out she was saying “Groove is in the heart.” 😆 I’m gonna Google it and see what the lead singer, the lovely Lady Miss Kier is doing now, 34 years later. Funny how time flies.

In 1990 when this was released I was an aspiring actress in NYC and waited tables in a restaurant basically next to the Limelight club on 6th ave and 20th street. I got to know the doorpeople and could get in without waiting in that humiliating line...THIS song was all the rage, as was the club drug ecstasy. Deee-lite is the groups name and the name of the girl is Lady Miss Kier. That scene in the beginning with all the people dancing was how a lot of the club goers dressed back then. When you walked through those church doors of the Limelight (It was in a former church built in the mid 1800s) you could be whatever and whoever you wanted to be with no judgmement.....it was a simply wonderful place and this song takes me back to those wonderful days of my younger years when ANYTHING seemed possible.....
