I remain resolute in my belief that the best horror movies do exactly that - not advertise themselves as horror movies. That's not to say they advertise a completely different tone or subject matter, mind you. They set the audience up for drama, they're honest about that. But they don't let on that it's "horror" drama until the audience is already in their seat and thoroughly invested. Think about Jurassic Park. It's a movie about dinosaurs being resurrected, the wonders of future technology! And half the movie involves characters being eaten alive, or nearly eaten, by rampaging dinosaurs. Characters being hunted, trapped, brutalized by these animals. We see very few of these deaths directly, but the implied violence is absolutely horrific. Jurassic Park is a horror movie, through and through.

To play devil's advocate, I kind of like that the theme of this movie was about after you successfully make it through trauma, how do you move on from trauma. And the main idea is you can't just forget it ever happened, because if you do, you aren't mentally ready for when life inevitably brings struggles again. It's message is to not forget, to confront it and learn from it, and that you can get through it with someone (your family).

One of the biggest issues with this film was screen time for past characters. I believe specs and tucker deserved a little bit more instead of just appearing on a KZbin clip. Carl should have been involved in helping josh gain back his memory (since he was the one that took it away from him) instead of renai just doing it on the couch Elise could have helped josh or dalton in the further and even face off against the red faced demon (which I believe had been teased throughout the series) And yeah i expected more screen time for the red faced demon as well.

My favorite horror movies are when the threat is super unknown and intimidating. Making the characters competent actually makes the threat that much more intimidating. We see MacReedy systematically piece together how the Thing monsters behave, with the soldering iron blood test being a very clever idea for identification. In Alien, Ripley frequently makes intelligent decisions and once she takes command of the crew, the survivors actually listen to her orders. And Predator goes out of it's way to show that Arnold and his men are all badass soldiers, making their one by one deaths at the hands of the Predator midway through the film that much more significant. That's why these classic monster movies not only have their iconic monsters but also iconic heroes.

From a artistic and technical standpoint I feel that horror is the hardest genre to create a well rounded movie/series. It really depends on so much like social norms what we find scary as a culture and what we accept as something out of the ordinary or mundane. I bet you make a movie about a mass shooter 50 years ago and it would shock people to their core. Now it would be written off as gimmicky or in bad taste.

I'm a horror fanatic and I swear Charlies Intro sentence is exactly why Horror is the best genre. You either get quality movies like Alien or you get B tier trash like Wickerman. And then you have stuff like Color out of space which sits right between. Honestly no matter what gets released in the horror genre it's always gold. Either comedy or horror. Also Horror as a genre is a lot more creative and original imo. There is a lot of copy pasted trash but there is so much new fun and controversial stuff being used in artistic ways that make horror one of the most varied and special genre. Anyway off to watch Martyr have fun!

Martyrs? The 2008 one? It's been 2 hours so I hope I'm not spoiling anything. I feel like it was a ridiculous movie and not the scariest horror movie. Wasn't terrible but some movies really drag out the rough stuff and in this movie, it comes across like torture porn or something I just don't get. At a certain point, the shock wears off and they keep piling it on and I wanted the movie to move on out of boredom rather than disgust or fear or anything, it just got ridiculous. Except for that decent chunk of the movie, pretty good. Maybe I just prefer a different kind of horror, but at least people weren't lying when they said it was a rough movie. Won't be watching it again.

To be honest, I think this has been happening for a long time now. Every paranormal activity after the second one, and that's being generous, had entered that territory. There's honestly only been a handful of American horror films in the last ten years that pass the smell check and only a couple of those were by all definitions, good. Horror lost its way a long time ago but, arguably at least in the West I don't know if there ever truly was a tried and true method for success in that regard. The standards by which what people found truly a horror experience varied wildly even back in the day and quite a few sharks were jumped after one movie or another found a new way to make things scary, spooky, or actually horrifying and too often their sequels lose all the good will and meaning behind what made them good.

The art of horror and scaring people is becoming a lost art nowadays. I think a big thing that horror nowadays needs to rely less on cheap jump scares. They need to implement ways to overstimulate our senses and play with them to make us feel scared, feel unprepared for the scary. Make us feel like we are in the situation ourselves and full on creep and scare us this way, fancy camera movement and editing as well can help this but a good storyline as well can help make it make sense and keep the tension and the feeling of being on the edge while watching the movie. Just a shame that a lot of “scary” movies are just shock movies

The problem is that modern “ horror / thriller “ movies heavily rely on jump scares and unnecessary gore . Recent horror movies have no real horror element . Just some random jumpscares along with gore all over again . Look at all the conjuring and insidious sequels . Conjuring 1 and insidious 1 did a great job with mixing jumpscares with real horror things . Sequels are just bland with zero to no scary scenes . Like “ the nun “ movie which had hell of a potential to be one of the scariest movies of all time . But it was meh . Everything else is somewhat same . A24 movies are great but they aren’t really “ horror “ . They are psychological thrillers which always has somewhat a same but unnerving plot . Only a very few amount of hollywood horror movies actually scared me and most of them were from 2000s or eary 2010s . For an example Sinister , Conjuring , Jeepers Creepers ( 1 , 2 ) , Dead silence ( probably the best and one of the scariest horror movies of all time and mad underrated ) , Strangers , Lake Mungo , paranormal activity . These are actually scary if you watch them at night . Specially dead silence , jeepers creepers and strangers . They do not have tons of gore and jumpscares . Even movies like jeepers creepers are supposed to about gore and a monster who eats humans , the movies barely had any gore . But they had real horror elements . Also the use of practical and digital vfx plays a huge part . Most of these movies had practical effects which creates more atmosphere . Recent movies are just cgi crap . Hollywood horror genre is so mid rn . I used to have some hope for the upcoming five nights at freddies movie . But the last trailer looks so bad and way too bright to be a fnaf movie . This is also another franchise with hella potential but I can’t predict shi so imma wait for it until it is released . But i gotta say , Asian people are hella talented when it comes to making thriller , horror genre movies / shows . Every one of them are actually scary but also has good plot lines . Not only horror , thriller , they do a really great job in every genre with extremely creative and new ideas . Still don’t get how they are not well recognized and underrated

To me a game or movie that is boring are much worse than a bad game. At least with something that is bad there’s at least something salvageable. Like Super Mario Bros., Batman & Robin, Street Fighter: The Movie are the type of films that as much as they don’t work as films are not good there’s at least something you can point at and laugh, even better with friends and there’s something that can be learned from, they can teach you something and make you go: “You know what? As bad as it is there’s at least an interesting idea, maybe a cool action scene here and there.” A boring bad game and movie are ones that are not only tiring to get through but can be painful in a way that it becomes insulting, like it feels offensive, and with boring material there’s only so much you can talk and bitch about without coming off as immature and ranting, it’s a void of nothing.

Fun bad is when the creators were just trying to have fun with it and it came out bad. You get the energy and creativity mixed with it just not working how they wanted at all, if that take it too seriously then it just becomes dull. There is a breaking point where it so over the top serious and ridged it becomes funny again, but in general fun bad comes from a place of passion without the skill to execute
