I hate when people compare the US to a European country. It will always be a dumb comparison the US is 40x bigger than the UK with about 6x the population. Local level government is also a lot more powerful in the US than in Europe these statistical comparisons will change wildly depending on what state you pick It's never going to be an equal comparison. For example the city of London has an almost identical number of knife crime as the entire state of Florida even though Florida has nearly 2.5 the population as London. Meanwhile you go to a garbage city like new york where crime in general is rampant and it slightly edges out London in knife crime rate

The Tomb Guards (Honor Guards) don't habitually carry loaded weapons and perform the same role as the King's Guard in the UK, which is basically warning spectators to stay out of the way and to respect the dignity of the tomb area. If you charge a guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Washington you will be arrested by the police, not shot by the guard. The soldiers with the red coats at Buckingham Palace and other royal properties are part of the Household Division (Coldstream, Grenadier, Welsh, Irish, Scots Guards). This is the most senior part of the British Army's infantry - the Coldstreams and the Grenadiers both predate the USA by over a hundred years - and it is very prestigious to serve there, as much as it is to be a Tomb Sentinel. The guards in the UK are fully trained, operational soldiers, who spend six months on ceremonial duties and six months on operations in the field; the guys you see in the sentry posts aren't officers but rather enlisted soldiers, usually privates, lance corporals and corporals. I was very fortunate to have been part of a group which had a private audience with some of the Honor Guard at Arlington when I visited DC on a cadet exchange so I hope this clears a few things up!

The same way the boys don't understand why people like cities, I'll never understand why people like US-style/Australian style suburbs. It's a very isolating existence growing up in one as a teenager without a car or anytwhere to go. There's not even a convenience store or quaint cafe in the neighbourhood of cookie cutter single family homes, and a long trek to the strip mall and a town that's 50% parking lots. We don't have grass? There are parks everywhere in Edinburgh Scotland where I live, plus a massive extinct volcano in the middle of the city you can hike, with views of the whole city centre. 9:23 I like how Andrew mocks people that say "There's so much to do in the city" as having boring lives then two seconds later offers as advice "find things to do" 🤦♂uhh, that's kinda why people flock to cities Andrew. Like, you realise there are endless meetup groups and social opportunities in cities that don't exist in the suburbs? Or should I just spend my evenings getting hammered and doing doughnuts in the parking lot of the local McDonalds since that's the only goddamn thing to do in my depressing suburban hometown?

I’m not one to follow statistics normally, because I’m a moron, but I thought London was top of this year’s clean cities list with a score of like 70 something. I know it’s a city and they are always going to be dirtier than a nice small village and whatnot, and I’m not saying that that particular list is accurate, but I’ve been to a few cities and London was one of the cleanest easily. I don’t know, I don’t know.

There's been strikes this year over rubbish collecting
@legarcondubois7929 Жыл бұрын
@@MonTheWell1886 I can definitely see how that would make a considerable effect on ones impressions, indeed. However, the point about graffiti and homelessness is a bit far perhaps. I’ve never been to a city that doesn’t have graffiti or some level of homelessness and London is no exception but it feels a lot less in your face. Perhaps my points are an amalgamation of anecdotal and half-remembered stats, yet I feel a too-general distaste of city life and culture is affecting judgement severely here in the podcast. I don’t like cities, I’m a countryside goblin so they scare me just in thought, but London was good. Yes, you have the usual urban problems but I felt it was a superior global city (albeit I’ve only visited European cities so I can’t speak with solid authority beyond this continent). I’d happily have a nice discussion about this as I’m genuinely interested in perception of cities.

Andrew is just wrong, too. The rifles are unloaded, but they have ammunition nearby every station. If there was a sudden threat, the protocol is to call the police *and load the rifles* - they aren’t purely ceremonial, they’re active duty servicemen. Also, when a threat is known beforehand, those rifles are loaded from the get-go. They look silly in red? That’s because the legacy of the redcoats is that we wanted you to see them coming - and it was more important that you didn’t see them bleed. Such a dumb point though. Andrew’s precious guard at the unknown soldier’s tomb look laughable, too.

The guards guns aren’t loaded “mostly” if the terrorist alert is high enough some will be loaded. But ammo is normally kept very close so In the event of something happening the guards can fall back and protect the Royals. But there are armed police all over the palace as well as undercover armed ppo’s. And they aren’t all officers, they are soldiers from a regiment, that switch between guard duty and for example war in iraq.

Charlie and Andrew are too indoctrinated by the American perception of holidays and vacations, in that you only get a week off, so you can have to maximise your enjoyment to encapsulate 7 days at most. They can't comprehend the idea that you can still have fun in another country for at least a month, spacing out your fun and really soak in that culture and awe. It's very sad. I spent 3 weeks in Japan a few months ago and it wasn't nearly enough, even though I was out every day doing new stuff.
