DysfunctionalBubble, it's the same thing here in Australia. We have a government funding body called Screen Australia which channels taxpayer money into mediocre films. Their aim is to promote Australian films, but like any government program, the result is the opposite of the intention. Australian films are so boring that no one watches them. To get a film made here, you have to convince some committee that your film has merit. I don't know what the criteria are. I imagine that the committee members pick films that will make them look good in front of their peers at their cocktail parties. So they pick films that make Important Social Commentary. They certainly don't pick films on the basis of likely commercial success. It's the same in France too. They once made such inventive and innovative films. Now their films are just so tedious. I think if I were dragged along to a French film these days, I would take some headphones just in case so I could listen to a podcast if I couldn't stand the boredom.

20:52 I don't know about chinese but in Japanese this instrument is called "shô" so what Penn saying the show must go on was actually pretty funny

The dude that checked Tellers needles at 42.10 had some really sassy ear warmers. Never seen anything like it.

Actually you're right about that. Penn does know about the magic, but Teller is the real brains behind it. Penn even says so in his book! He's basically the assistant...which is actually cool if you think about it, since the perception is that Teller is the assistant. O.o

Watching this it's pretty hard not to like the Chinese people. Tough, talented, hard-working, and always smiling and friendly.

Id say those positive traits come at the cost of individual freedoms and luxury. The traits of the chinese people are hammered in by those who can exploit it. Aka businesses and the communist government

Not all Chinese people are like this, these people probably arent like this 24/7, these people just have a talent.

Penn: They say you havent truly experienced china until you sample the local cuisine Also Penn: I'd rather eat fire

I think this still my favorite of the three. Something about these remote towns and the freezing cold has something mythical and almost creepy in some places. Like when they went into that Magic show all alone and these Magicians performing for practically nobody. It's bizarre but makes me come back to this episode.

I love how Teller has mastered the "knowing look". He doesn't need to speak - he only needs to look at you awry and you know what he's thinking.

Positive Vibes very true, there are many atrocities committed by the government and it's cohorts. But overall, I have never had a negative interaction with a native of China and the bulk of its population seems to be a very kind and welcoming people.
