I ended a 30+ year friendship. Because I realized, she honestly didn’t care about my feelings. She just liked how I paid for things, and how I was always there when her mouth got her into trouble. The one time I should have gotten it, but ignored her behavior. Was the one time she openly disrespected me. I was the fat friend in high school. Already fun times there. And she was a toothpick. She looked at me, and said “you have the face, but I have the body. That all the boys want.” I used to hate myself for past trauma, so that’s my only excuse for letting that slide. Now if someone can’t give me the same energy I put out, I can’t know them anymore. Luckily, I have a wonderful husband who gives me that.

I ended a 10+ year friendship because she became an alcoholic (I don’t drink for medical reasons) and she kept ghosting me (before there was a name for it)! But she also didn’t mind accepting meals and a weekend getaway with me for nothing! (I took her with me to an aunt and uncles’ place for a weekend! I paid for the rental car and gas and we split our food! Then she ghosted me again!). That was in the early 2000’s! Still talk to her sister on FB but that’s it! That friend also didn’t like me talking about my traumatic childhood and toxic family/mother! I needed people around me who would listen!

One of my brothers used to "only joke" with me. Mom and dad thought it a good way to build my character. Now, I don't talk to this brother. My father realized and apolgized for not taking the crap he did seriously. My mother denies his teasing happened and even blames me for exaggerating and being a drama queen. My mother never likes being reminded she wasn't the best mom. The teasing wasn't anything pysical s*xually, but it has messed with me pycologically. Edited due to spelling error.

I had a similar situation, one always joked abt me the other was very nice. One time he "joked" in front of my mom and she laughed as well, I was looking straight at her and then she told him to stop saying that... But my brother became nicer (as in he buys me food), soooo i kinda forgave him, he still jokes but I'm used to it becus its the same thing he says, i started joking back too actually, 🫠 My parents never knew how rude he was to me becus he said behind their back.

Once I was ranting to two of my friends about my body dysmorphia and how I wasn’t happy with my appearance and so on. Then my one friend says, “Listen, you are literally two times tinier than me and when you say that you’re fat, how do you think that makes me feel? If you think you’re fat, does that mean you think I’m an elephant or something?” I reassured her that body dysmorphia is just how I see myself and I thought she looked fine. I don’t know why but it just hurt. Like it reinforced the idea in my mind that I was just being stupid and I should be happy when I look at myself in the mirror and that my insecurities are just me being dumb. I felt dumb for hating myself and it all just made me hate myself more.

I've been skinny-shamed for a lot of my life, and a few comments have really still lingered with me. Things like people saying I was light as a feather after picking me up without my consent, or one girl refusing to believe that I was (at the time) 11, and instead saying I was 8 or 9 even after I got visibly upset. It's really just small stuff like that that has lingered with me and still gives me many insecurities. Even with my friends there have been a lot of jokes about my skim and slightly gangly figure, which I can't bring myself to laugh at anymore. I don't have anything wrong with me, I just have fast metabolism that runs in my mother's side of the family. When I was in KINDERGARDEN I thought I was being selfish for being upset about it and that I should just get over it. No CHILD should have to feel that way. No HUMAN BEING should have to feel that way. It's messed up and causes issues. To the person reading this, love your body, love yourself, and if your body isn't changing, it's because that's where it's comfortable being. Never shame someone for their body, and just be you

Ive already comment this story but not one of the "jokes" There was this boy who confessed and I rejected him. He was always known to make joke on people that can be very painful. A year before he confessed to me, he told me "your ugly and a mistake." Him and his friend would laugh. This really hurt as I'm very self-conscious even though I don't show it and had stopped cutting a year and a few months before I met him. So that really hurt. He probably forgot about it giving him the gulls to confess a year later, but I didn't. Nor will I ever I cried when I reached home and my mom had to lecture me about how perfect I was.

Once when I was at my uncle’s house with my siblings he was making fun of the way I looked and acted. Would call me ugly, weird, and just not normal. What destroyed me the most was when he said “If you get married I’ll feel so bad for your husband to be living with you ha” and then him, my brother, and sister all started laughing. I faked laughed the entire time when really I was dying inside and felt like I was going to cry. He moved away last year for his new job and I was still so pissed about that one time that I didn’t even say goodbye to him. Nor do I even miss him.

I had a friend who would say rude things then ended it with "Its just a joke." Back in grade 9 I was pretty mentally and emotionally fragile. I was talking about how I wanted to be a video game designer and he looked me dead in the eyes and said "no one is gonna buy your games." There was this guy who was my friend for about 5 years. He had a crush on me and I made myself clear, a million of times, that I don't feel the same for him. One evening, we made plans to hang out. We were in his car. Suddenly, it started raining heavily, so he stopped the car to a side while we just talked. Nothing else happened but... Few days later, we were texting each other about something and somehow the conversation ended on that day which I just mentioned. For the story on the thumbnail... I honestly feel so bad for that kid, society in this day and age is so fatphobic and I remember being VERY overweight (240). That image of yourself never goes away and you always see yourself like that even if you lose weight. And people's comments DO NOT help. They say they're trying to "encourage" others who are overweight but all it does is shame them. Don't make mean comments and offer help if someone needs and wants it instead. Create a fitness plan with them. Eat healthy meals with them. And most importantly, don't be too hard on them, we're all human.

The last one hit hard..someone told me that they wouldn’t have cared if I got Covid and died and that it’d just be more room on the school bus. I was already going through personal issues and that made it so much harder. Out of the five who were laughing, only one stood up for me and said that wasn’t okay. I can sort of relate to the smile story. It happened years ago, I can't remember exactly how long ago it was though. One of my childhood friends wanted to have a picture of me by my number in her phone, so she was going to take a picture when we were hanging out. I just sat there, smiling the way I always did. She stands there for a while, sighs and looks at me, then says "can't you just smile normally?" From that moment on, I always make silly faces or cover my mouth with my hand, unless I'm with family or very close friends. I didn't realize how much that comment made me insecure about my smile until recently though, when I talked about it with my mother, who were wondering why I'm always covering my smile with my hand (It doesn't even have to be because we're taking pictures, just smiling in general).

Omg, one day I went to school in about 6th grade, and my mom was like “who are you tryna impress, little lady?” I was literally wearing a floral green button down top to school, nothing much more other than a pair of jeans. Like please, don’t go there I actually decided to not wear a hoodie today mom. I told her “no one, mom, I’m just wearing my favorite shirt.” And left the house lol.

The doctor thing sounds like Asian education. I have a diploma in social care (for children), another one in languages (3 at once) and I'm in school again to get a bachelor of business and journalism. I'm 21. When I told my Vietnamese grandma I passed all my courses with great grades she said "well I'd be interested if it wasn't useless, you're studying so much but still not in law school" yeah sorry granny for actually studying things I like and being successful at...

A friendly reminder that the main rule for a joke is that everyone finds it funny. This includes mildly-insulting jokes. If the target of the mockery isn't having it, you stop and apologise immediately. This is a known rule. If it's not followed, the rudeness was 100% intentional and 100% deserves to be called out for being an insensitive prick. It's one of the few times I encourage a little public shaming to get a message across. One of the best ways to do that is to ask: "What part of that was supposed to be funny?" in a genuinely curious voice (you can do an angry voice but a curious one prevents them from claiming you're overreacting) and watch them try to justify their terrible behaviour in a way that doesn't paint them in a bad light. Don't rescue them from the awkwardness, no matter how much "Oh you're a party pooper huh?" type of comments you get. They had no issues making you the butt of a bad joke, you don't owe them any courtesy. It's not about self-worth, it's about not putting up with undeserved bs that got out of hand because no one stopped it. Take care of yourselves~

I’ve got a story too. I have this friend. He’s a good friend but this one MAJOR absolutely not ik flaw he has, (probably) scars all his friends He calls me stupid and ugly all the time everyday. It’s a joke for him but a major down thought for me. It really hurts :( We’re in 6th grade going in 7. He should know better, he does know better. Then when I show emotion he just says “it’s a just joke” and calls me sensitive. He does this to our other friend too. Another one, this one is our other friends. So all of them were stiting at lunch, and then I dunno something happens about his other friends birthday and like the day of the bday, so he asked my other friend and by other friend didn’t remember, but his other friend did. He then produces to absolutely bully my other friend about not remembering the birthday about someone my other friend didn’t even know too well. He was like “haha ______ removers her birthday and you don’t?? How did _____ get it before you lol ur so stupid”. My friends name is Adrien. He’s a really super duper good friend other than they rude bullying, but his rudeness stings. If I say how he hurts me he will just say “well, I can’t help it.. and if you can’t handle it we can’t be friends” (he can help it he is so nice to one friend just bc she’s “innocent”) what should I do!??
