People, keep in mind what the spinners are intended be used according to their original creator. But to me, I believe they're perfectly okay to be used by anyone as long as they help the user and not distract other people.

The point of fidget spinners was for people with ADHD to keep focused only on the spinner. I don't know where the rumour that said it was to concentrate on anything came from, but it's fake.

I don't have ADHD, but I have quit smoking 3 weeks ago, after 17 years. I have to say that the fidget spinner is really helping me a lot. Every time I crave a cigarette, I play with it, I try to do tricks and, after a while, I completely forget about the desire of smoking. Also, I work in retail, constantly dealing with customers, and the fidget spinner is also helping me with the stress caused by that. For me is now essential to have it in my pocket.

I completely agree. I don't have ADHD myself but it annoys the heck out of me that so many kids say it helps them but they don't even have a condition it is supposed to help and they are just using it as an excuse to have a toy in class. I actually feel like at least 40% of kids in my school have a fidget spinner and there is no way they all need one. It makes me feel bad for those that actually need devices like that but can't use them because they are getting banned.
@strawberrybonbon5943

Laran Polyak Because fidget spinners are banned I usually use something called a Tangle, it's just a chain link kind of thing and I find that helps me focus/helps my anxiety and it isn't a distraction, like I used it in my Spanish tests because it doesn't make a noise and I could just fiddle with it under the table, so I'd really recommend one of these

i have anxiety too, and decided to get one! it works quite well, my anxious habit is picking at my nails and I've definitely cut down on doing it - it's nice to keep in my pocket and fiddle with. my only issue is society - people have ruined fidget cubes and spinners and at my school personally, people laugh if you have one, like haha those r so old get a life, which is a shame but I keep it in my pocket most of the time. I would definitely recommend one though! 😊

Fidget cubes are better. Fidget spinners have been blown out of proportion and kind of abused for their use. Fidget cubes are way more effective in both use and their intended audience. Consumerism has destroyed any positive effect fidget spinners would have originally had for ADHDers or those on the spectrum or with anxiety and rendered them redundant.

Sure did make sense, lovely. 😊 And same. It is probably my current biggest pet hate when they are such a useful item for those of us who actually can use/need them. They're not toys, they're coping mechanisms/aides for those with learning difficulties. And yeah, fidget cubes are fabulous. They don't get repetitive because you can change up your fidget once it stops being effective and they're not distracting to others because they fit beneath your palm for you to play with quietly. They're fabulous. Also - thanks. 😄 Love when somebody actually gets the reference. 👏😛

Doctors Companion I completely understand how the fidget spinners are annoying with the fact that they've become more a fad these days. But they honestly do help. Maybe not for every body and for the same things. But it does help. But people are allowed to have them as a toy if they want to. I dont see the big deal in it. I just think it's annoying how popular it's gotten and how many little kids have them that dont need them and just think they're cool. I feel like how adhd users use caffeine to calm themselves down and it works opposite for them then it does for people who don't have it. I think the same applies for the fidget toys. It may be a distraction for most people, but people with adhd it could work oppositely and help them focus. And me personal I bounce my legs and move a lot but I dont have adhd and it helps. I also have anxiety too and this little thing helps me release energy and keeps me calm.

Doctors Companion My little brother who is on the spectrum (aged 11) has 2 fidget cubes and 2 fidget spinners and he uses the spinners way more. They calm him more because he actually uses them for more than 30 seconds. The cubes help but are alot more short term. I see your point but everyone is different in what helps them and what doesn't.

***** It really depends on the person. Some prefer the fidget spinner and think it works better for them, while others prefer the cube. There's no such thing as a "one size fits all" sort of product. Everybody is different and everybody who has ADHD/ADD or anxiety are effected differently and are helped by different things. Just take a look at the comments, the effectiveness of the cube vs the spinner varies greatly from person to person. I know plenty of people with adhd or anxiety and the spinner works great for them but then others not so much.

so I understand the purpose, I used to scratch my scalp and damage it by picking at it when I was stressed so I do see how a fidget spinner can be a more safe and healthy distraction . I have ADD and scratching my head or fidgeting when stressed in a harmful way ( scratching, bitting nails, picking at scabs, pulling hair )is more of an anxiety thing and a fidget spinner could be a healthy alternative.

I scratch my scalp a lot and I've found fake nails to be the best deterrent. Even if you cut them as short as your real nails. I don't wear them any more though because they damaged my nails :/ depends which ones you get I suppose. My fidget cube is helpful if I keep reminding myself to use it, I often find my hand has gone back to my head without me realising it so I have to stop and pick up the cube again.

I have to draw on top of my desk, I HAVE to lean forward in my chair when im writing/taking a test, I tap on space bar when i'm using a computer, I fidget CONSTANTLY, I talk to myself as if I were having a conversation with an idol/another person, I have to cross my feet together while sitting down, I have my mind set on something, but then go a diffrent direction.... ALRIGHT ill stop, but these are mostly everything I do. I never been diagnosed but I think I have a small part of my that does have it, if that makes any sense :|

It'd be interesting to know what type of ADHD they have. Whether they have the inattentive type (formerly called ADD), the hyperactive type, or the combined type (both inattentive and hyperactive) might have an effect on how well or poorly the fidget spinner worked for them. I have the inattentive type, which means I daydream a lot and my mind tends to have way too many tabs open at any given time (or if I'm "hyperfocusing," it'll have only one tab open for an unspecified but prolonged period of time). I was originally diagnosed as combined type when I was in grade school, but later diagnoses suggested that I outgrew the hyperactivity and retained the inattentiveness. My older brother, however, has always had the hyperactive type. While I can't seem to pay attention for very long, he can't seem to sit still for very long. Those with the combined type can't seem to do either. So I'm curious which type (if any) the fidget spinner or fidget cube seems to work best on.
@ngcharlotte
@ngcharlotte 7 жыл бұрын
Justin Credible it probably works better for the hyperactive type. im not diagnosed, but i think i have inattentive adhd and tbh fidget spinners arent for me. i havent bought one, but just the sight of it ticks me off. idk fidget spinners may or may not work for both. inattentive adhd types usually focus on one thing and cant work well with something else going on. hyperactive types work well with fidgeting.
@jtown913
@jtown913 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah I can see that. I'm also wondering if maybe it works differently for certain activities across the different types as well. Since I'm the inattentive type too, I could see it helping me focus on recreational activities like watching a tv show/movie, but would definitely distract me when doing productive tasks. For example: I have this terrible habit of starting a movie, and then checking my phone, and getting so caught up with whatever I'm doing on my phone that I tune out the movie entirely; and before I know it, 25 minutes have gone by and I now have no idea what's going on in the movie. So I have to restart the movie only to end up doing the same exact thing. I feel like maybe a fidget spinner might help in this situation since I might be less tempted to pull out my phone if I already having something in my hands to preoccupy them, ya know? On the other hand, I definitely don't see a fidget spinner helping me focus on finishing an academic paper or studying for law school exams since I tend not to fidget when I'm trying to be productive.

I use fidgets to redirect skin picking (my thumbs are maybe 30% hangnail, it's disgusting). I find the interlocked-ring type works a lot better for me. The spinner requires more conscious intent, the ring one feels much more automatic - it just kind of fades into the background. I like that I can fiddle with it in a pocket, pretty much any situation when I'd otherwise be bothering my skin. Little worry stones are helpful as well.

Me too! People I sit by get annoyed, but it just helps me to tap my foot. I also seriously bite the insides of my cheeks until they bleed; even my dentist is telling me I do it a lot. I just get nervous and restless very easily, and daydream and get distracted so often.

I have found that the heavier metal fidget spinners help me, I like the weight of them, but normal ones tend to actually frustrate me more. Those don't really help.

What gets me about fidget spinners is they don't help everyone. However, with me I would always forget what I'm working on until I started to use a fidget spinner and in times were I really need to focus I will use it the help my brain chill and I end up remembering more about what I'm doing.

I don't have ADHD but I always get distracted and I fidget with everything (including using pens as drumsticks) and it would annoy my teachers and friends a lot. Fidget spinners distract me even more but a fidget cube actually help so much to keep me focused because I am always doing something.

i have a fidget spinner that i just use at home because i don't feel comfortable using it in public/school because everybody hates them now. so at school i pull out strands of hair one by one from anxiety. i've never been tested for adhd should i get tested?

Pulling out hairs due to anxiety is known to be called tricotellomania. It is not ADHD but you should still go to some type of therapist for it so you don't end up pulling too much out.

I agree it sounds like trich. I have trich, and anxiety, and I am autistic. Fidgets are great in class, you just have to choose the right kind. I find a tangle, a silent fidget cube, a squishy stress ball, and other fidgets helpful in overloading, anxiety provoking moments like lectures

Susan Williams I forgot what that was called lol. I knew it started with a T, and that it's in the same category as dermatillomania, but I couldn’t remember the name lol. Also, where do you get "silent" fight cubes? I would love something like that. P.S. Is the tangled very helpful? I suspect that I may be on the spectrum, and I'm just curious how helpful that might be. Sorry for the long comment lol.

I have been thinking of getting a fidget spinner because when I get really anxious or I can't concentrate because my head and mind is bored, I always start fidgeting on things, spinning pencils or taps my foot. And when I get a episode and every sense goes into overload, I often need something to fidget with that's round since that keeps me calm and helps me "slow down."

I have adhd and anxiety, and i've used fidget spinners. for me it helps, but everyone has different things that helps them. fidget spinners are a tool that works for me, but not for everyone, and i think it's great that people use time and resources trying to find tools for people with concentration issues, anxiety etc
